You just pulled a heavy equipment trailer two hours down the interstate, and during the trip you heard a recurring metal-on-metal squeak from the hitch area. That sound may come from a dry hitch ball or coupler, but noise alone does not prove the cause. It can also come from the coupler’s latch or pivot points, an adjustable coupler tube, the truck’s removable-ball mechanism, safety-chain hardware, suspension components, or another part moving under load. Stop in a safe place and inspect the towing system rather than assuming that grease is the only thing it needs.
Gooseneck couplers do a lot of quiet work. Most conventional heavy-duty gooseneck connections use a 2-5/16-inch ball, while certain higher-capacity systems use a 3-inch ball. Diamond C’s 40,000-pound FMAX package, for example, uses a 3-inch 40K telescoping coupler. Whatever system you own, the ball, coupler, hitch, truck, and mounting hardware must be compatible, and the towing combination is limited by its lowest-rated component. Correct lubrication reduces friction and corrosion, but it cannot repair worn, cracked, distorted, loose, or mismatched parts. Here is what to use, how to apply it, and how to recognize when inspection or replacement is more appropriate than another coat of grease.
Why Coupler Grease Is Not Optional
A conventional gooseneck ball articulates inside the coupler’s ball pocket as the truck and trailer turn, climb grades, cross dips, and travel over uneven pavement. The contact surfaces carry substantial vertical and fore-and-aft loads during towing. Without an adequate lubricant film, the metal surfaces can experience increased friction, noise, heat, galling, scoring, and accelerated wear. Lubrication is therefore part of normal maintenance for a standard metal ball-and-pocket connection unless the hitch or coupler manufacturer specifically calls for a different procedure.
Grease also helps protect exposed metal from water and corrosion. Rain, road spray, mud, and winter deicing chemicals can contaminate the ball, coupler pocket, and removable-ball receiver. A clean, light coating of the lubricant specified by the component manufacturer provides a protective barrier. It does not eliminate the need to clean and inspect the parts, however. Grease mixed with sand, rust, or metal debris becomes abrasive, and excessive grease can collect contamination or interfere with mechanisms that are supposed to receive oil rather than heavy grease.
What Grease to Use
Not all lubricants are interchangeable. Begin with the maintenance instructions for the exact hitch and coupler installed on the truck and trailer. Diamond C currently uses CURT Cushion Couplers as standard equipment on gooseneck models rated up to 30,000 pounds, while other couplers and higher-capacity configurations can have different requirements.
- Automotive chassis, wheel-bearing, or multipurpose grease is commonly suitable for the metal ball and ball pocket when the manufacturer calls for grease. Use a quality product intended for loaded metal-to-metal surfaces and apply only a thin, complete coating.
- Water-resistant or marine-grade grease can be useful where the hitch is repeatedly exposed to rain, mud, or salt, provided it is compatible with the hitch and coupler manufacturer’s instructions. Water resistance does not make contaminated grease safe to leave in place.
- White lithium grease is specified for certain removable-ball components. B&W, for example, instructs Turnoverball owners to apply white lithium grease to the four corners of the ball’s square post as needed to help prevent seizing.
- Extreme-pressure grease containing molybdenum disulfide may be appropriate where a component manufacturer permits it, but it is not automatically required simply because a trailer has a high GVWR. Grease selection should follow the component instructions, not trailer weight alone.
- Penetrating oils and water-displacing sprays are not substitutes for load-bearing grease on a conventional ball-and-pocket connection. A manufacturer may specify light oil for pivots or an internal locking mechanism, but that does not mean the same product is sufficient for the ball contact surface.
There is no universal mileage interval that applies to every Diamond C, H&H, truck hitch, coupler design, climate, or duty cycle. Inspect the connection before each tow and renew the lubricant whenever the ball is dry, dirty, contaminated, or has been cleaned. CURT’s 30K gooseneck-coupler instructions call for keeping the ball pocket and mechanism clean, greasing the ball pocket at least annually, oiling pivot points with SAE 30-weight motor oil, checking hardware torque, and inspecting the retaining pin. Severe service may require attention much more often. Always follow the shorter or more demanding interval stated by the manufacturers of the installed components.
How to Grease It Correctly
Park on firm, level ground, chock the trailer wheels, support the trailer securely with the landing gear, separate the coupler from the ball, and keep hands away from pinch points. Clean before adding grease. Wipe the ball and accessible ball pocket with a clean rag and remove dirt, sand, hardened grease, rust flakes, and metal particles. If a compatible cleaner is needed, keep it away from rubber cushions, seals, wiring, paint, and other materials it could damage. Let the cleaned metal dry fully before relubricating it.
Inspect both components while they are clean. Look for cracks, deformation, loose hardware, abnormal flat spots, deep grooves, sharp ridges, galling, pitting, severe corrosion, damaged plating, or a latch that does not move freely and close completely. Confirm that the ball size and rating match the coupler and that every part of the towing system is rated for the intended load. Do not tow with a cracked, bent, broken, mismatched, or questionably worn component.
Apply a thin, even film of the specified grease over the ball’s working surface or to the ball pocket as directed by the component manufacturer. More is not necessarily better. Large blobs collect dirt and squeeze out into the truck bed without improving protection at the contact surface. A disposable glove or clean applicator can spread the grease evenly while keeping contamination out of the container.
Operate the coupler latch while the trailer remains safely supported and unhitched. Oil or grease only the locations specified for that coupler. Some designs call for grease in the ball pocket and SAE 30-weight oil at pivot points; others include grease fittings or different service instructions. Never force a stiff latch closed with the trailer’s weight. If cleaning and the specified lubricant do not restore smooth operation, have the mechanism inspected or replaced.
After coupling, verify visually and physically that the coupler is fully seated and locked. Install the retaining pin or lock, connect both safety chains to the truck’s designated attachment points, attach the breakaway cable independently of the chains, connect the electrical plug, raise and secure the landing gear, and test the lights and trailer brakes. Follow the hitch or coupler manufacturer’s prescribed coupling check or pull test before entering traffic.
B&W Turnoverball: Specific Considerations
The B&W Turnoverball is a removable underbed gooseneck hitch. Its 2-5/16-inch ball has a square post that fits into the hitch receiver and is retained by a locking pin. When the truck is not towing, the ball can be removed, turned over, and stored in the receiver to leave a generally level truck-bed surface. The hitch, ball, truck, and trailer ratings still must be checked for the specific installation; the presence of a 2-5/16-inch ball does not by itself establish the capacity of the complete towing system.
B&W’s current maintenance guidance calls for a light coating of white lithium grease on the four corners of the Turnoverball’s square post as needed to help prevent seizing. Keep the post, receiver, pin, and surrounding truck-bed opening free of dirt and corrosion so the ball can seat completely and the pin can engage correctly. Do not substitute a general recommendation from another removable-ball brand for B&W’s instructions.
The exposed towing surface of the ball should receive the lubricant required by the trailer-coupler manufacturer. Remove dirty grease before renewing it. Before towing, confirm that the Turnoverball is oriented correctly, fully inserted, and captured by the locking pin. Pull upward on the installed ball as directed in the B&W procedure to confirm engagement. If the handle, pin, or ball will not move normally, clean and inspect the assembly rather than striking it, towing with partial engagement, or loading the mechanism with an unapproved lubricant.
A removable ball stored upside down still requires maintenance. Moisture and debris entering the receiver can cause corrosion and make later removal difficult. Periodically remove the ball, clean the post and receiver, inspect the pin and contact surfaces, and renew the specified white lithium grease. If rust, damage, or a seized mechanism prevents full installation and positive locking, contact B&W or a qualified hitch service facility before towing.
B&W also makes Companion fifth-wheel hitches and rail-mounted Patriot fifth-wheel hitches. These use a trailer kingpin and hitch jaws rather than a gooseneck ball pocket. Their lubrication points and procedures are different. Depending on the exact Companion or Patriot model, service may include the jaw mechanism, pivot bushings, grease fittings, and either a lubricated skid plate or an approved lube plate. Follow the current owner’s manual for the exact model instead of applying gooseneck-coupler instructions to a fifth-wheel hitch.
Reading Ball Wear: When Grease Is No Longer Enough
Grease reduces friction and corrosion, but it does not make a towing connection wear-proof. The rate of wear depends on load, articulation, alignment, contamination, lubrication, component hardness, mileage, and maintenance. Any unexplained looseness, clunking, difficult latching, visible damage, or recurring metal debris deserves investigation before the next trip.
A common heavy-duty gooseneck ball is 2-5/16 inches in nominal diameter, or 2.3125 inches, but some high-capacity systems use a 3-inch ball. Do not apply an assumed universal wear allowance to every brand of ball or coupler. SAE standards define performance requirements, but a single owner-service replacement diameter should not be invented from the nominal ball size. Measure only at the points and by the method specified by the ball or hitch manufacturer, and obtain that manufacturer’s service limit when wear is suspected.
Visual warning signs include a pronounced flat spot, deep circumferential groove, galling, displaced metal, cracking, deformation, heavy pitting, severe corrosion, or scoring that can be readily felt. Damaged plating alone may not establish the remaining strength of the ball, but it exposes the base metal and warrants close inspection. Replace a damaged or out-of-spec ball with the correct manufacturer-approved component whose ball size and load rating are compatible with the hitch, coupler, truck, and trailer.
Coupler condition is equally important. Clean the ball pocket so its surface can be examined, then check the latch, pivot points, retaining pin, adjustable tube, load-bearing pin, set bolts, and surrounding welds. CURT’s adjustable 30K gooseneck-coupler instructions require the load-bearing pin and its retainer to be installed correctly, the set bolts to be tightened to reduce vibration, and the mechanism and ball pocket to be maintained. Use the torque specifications and extension limits in the exact coupler manual rather than relying on a generic setting.
Do not weld, grind, reshape, shim, or install an improvised liner in a worn coupler. Coupler installation and structural welding are safety-critical work, and replacement must preserve the proper rating, orientation, attachment, and compatibility. A damaged ball-and-coupler connection can separate under dynamic load even when the truck and trailer appear secure while parked.
Quick check: With the trailer safely supported and uncoupled, clean and inspect the ball, ball pocket, latch, retaining components, and adjustable tube. After coupling, verify that the latch closes fully, the retainer is installed, and the connection passes the manufacturer’s prescribed check. Do not use a hand-applied side-load measurement or an arbitrary amount of movement as a universal pass/fail test. If looseness, clunking, or visible wear remains, have the hitch and coupler inspected before the next haul.
The Squeak Problem
A hitch-area squeak can come from several places, so diagnose it systematically. Common sources include a dry or contaminated ball pocket, dry coupler pivots, movement in an adjustable coupler tube, a removable-ball post or receiver, safety chains rubbing against hardware, suspension movement, or loose or worn components. Noise that changes with braking, turning, or suspension travel can help locate the source, but it does not replace a hands-on inspection.
A dry conventional ball-and-pocket interface is a frequent cause. Clean both surfaces and apply a thin coat of the specified grease. If the noise returns quickly, inspect for dirt intrusion, water washout, abnormal wear, ball-and-coupler incompatibility, loose adjustment hardware, or another moving part. Repeatedly covering contaminated or damaged surfaces with grease can hide evidence without correcting the underlying problem.
Coupler-pivot noise comes from the latching or articulation mechanism rather than the ball contact surface. Use only the lubricant and application points listed for that coupler. CURT’s 30K gooseneck-coupler instructions specify SAE 30-weight motor oil at the pivot points and grease in the ball pocket. Do not assume every pivot has a grease fitting, and do not drill an oil hole or add a fitting to a coupler that was not designed for one.
An adjustable inner coupler tube can also make noise if its set bolts are loose, its load-bearing pin is worn or incorrectly installed, or the tube and outer housing are damaged. Check the coupler manual for the correct hardware arrangement, torque, and maximum extension. Never use a rubber pad, improvised shim, or spacer between structural coupler parts to quiet movement. That can alter engagement, conceal wear, or interfere with the load path.
If lubrication does not resolve the sound, inspect the truck hitch, ball-retention system, coupler mounting, frame and neck welds, safety-chain attachments, landing gear, axles, suspension, brakes, wheels, and cargo securement. Stop towing immediately if the noise is accompanied by a loose connection, cracked weld, deformed component, shifting cargo, brake problem, unusual handling, or visible metal damage.

Products Worth Keeping in the Truck
A few items make routine inspection and lubrication easier at the shop, on the road, or at a job site:
- Manufacturer-approved automotive grease: keep a sealed tube of the lubricant specified for the ball pocket or removable-ball post; label it so it is not confused with oil intended for pivots
- SAE 30-weight motor oil or the specified light oil: carry this only if the installed coupler’s instructions call for it at pivot points or other moving parts
- Digital or dial caliper: useful for documenting dimensions when the component manufacturer supplies a measurement method and service limit, but not a substitute for inspection of cracks, deformation, or latch damage
- Inspection light and small mirror: useful for checking the ball pocket, retaining pin, receiver, adjustable tube, hardware, and accessible weld areas
- Shop rags, disposable gloves, and a sealable waste bag: remove contaminated grease without spreading it across the truck bed, tools, electrical connector, or cargo
- Printed or saved component manuals: keep the instructions for the exact truck hitch and trailer coupler available so lubricant types, torque values, coupling checks, extension limits, and replacement parts are not guessed
These supplies are inexpensive and fit in a small maintenance bag, but they do not replace correctly rated components or qualified repairs. A Diamond C FMAX212, for example, is currently offered at a 25,900-pound GVWR with two 12,000-pound Lippert axles and a CURT Cushion Coupler as the standard gooseneck-coupler option for configurations up to 30,000 pounds. Certain FMAX312 and FMAX216 configurations can be equipped with Diamond C’s 40,000-pound package, which includes a 3-inch 40K telescoping coupler and associated frame and neck reinforcements. Use the ball size, hitch, coupler, truck, and operating instructions that match the trailer’s actual VIN and configuration.
Greasing a gooseneck connection is simple, but safe maintenance is more than quieting a squeak. Clean the parts, use the lubricant specified for each contact point, verify positive engagement, and treat abnormal wear or movement as an inspection issue. Never exceed the GVWR, GAWR, hitch rating, coupler rating, ball rating, truck ratings, tire capacities, or any other limit in the towing system.
