Winterizing Your Trailer: Step-by-Step for Midwest Winters

The first hard freeze in Owen County usually catches someone off guard. Maybe it is you, with the trailer still sitting out back, last summer’s mulch or jobsite debris holding moisture against the deck and a tire that has been soft since September. Leave a trailer dirty, loaded, underinflated, and exposed through repeated freeze-and-thaw cycles, and corrosion, tire damage, seized hardware, contaminated bearings, and electrical problems become much more likely. None of those repairs is cheap, and several of them can create a serious towing hazard.

A basic winterizing inspection usually takes two to four hours, depending on the trailer’s size, equipment, mileage, and condition. A complete bearing repack, brake service, hydraulic inspection, or coating repair can take longer. Do it once, do it correctly, and your equipment should be much easier to put back into service when the first hauling job arrives in March. Here is how to work through it.

Wheel Bearings: The One You Can’t Skip

Wheel bearings can deteriorate without an obvious warning until heat, lubricant loss, corrosion, or incorrect adjustment causes a failure. Water intrusion during a wet summer, repeated heavy loads, and highway towing all increase the importance of regular service. Lippert’s maintenance guidance generally calls for physical bearing inspection and grease replacement every 12 months or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, with more frequent attention appropriate for severe use or repeated water exposure. Before winter storage, inspect the lubricant, seals, spindle, bearing cones, and races. Grease color varies by brand, so do not judge condition by whether it is golden. Replace grease that is gritty, hardened, separated, rusty, milky from water contamination, or mixed with an unknown and potentially incompatible grease.

Bearing selection must match the installed hub and spindle, not merely the trailer’s advertised GVWR. Many conventional 3,500 lb Lippert hub assemblies use an L68149 inner bearing and L44649 outer bearing, while many conventional 7,000 lb assemblies use a 25580 inner bearing and 14125A outer bearing. Those combinations are common, but they are not universal across every straight axle, drop axle, torsion axle, oil-bath hub, or older component package. Read the identification numbers stamped into the bearing cones and races, check the axle tag, and verify the grease-seal dimensions before ordering parts. When a bearing or race is pitted, discolored, corroded, scored, or flattened, replace the bearing and matching race together.

Spring-loaded bearing protectors can be useful on compatible boat-trailer hubs that are regularly immersed, but they are not a universal upgrade for utility, equipment, dump, or cargo trailers. Excess pressure or over-greasing can damage the rear seal and push grease into an electric brake assembly. Current Diamond C premium trailer lines use Lippert axles as standard, and many configurations use Lippert’s Super Lube system or a heavier oil-bath hub package. Service the exact system installed on the trailer, use the specified lubricant, rotate the hub while adding grease when the instructions require it, and stop before pressure damages the seal. A lubrication fitting does not eliminate the need for periodic hub removal, bearing inspection, seal replacement, and brake inspection.

After reassembly, rotate each hub by hand and compare it with the others. The hub should turn smoothly without grinding, clicking, binding, or a repeating rough spot. Some drag from correctly adjusted drum brakes can be normal, so a generic requirement for “slight resistance” is not enough to confirm correct assembly. Check end play and spindle-nut adjustment using the axle manufacturer’s procedure, install a new seal and any required one-time-use cotter pin or locking component, and torque the wheel fasteners to the trailer or wheel manufacturer’s specification. Always lift and support the trailer by approved frame locations, never by placing a concentrated lifting or support load on the axle tube or suspension.

Tires: Pressure, Cracks, and Flat-Spotting

Cold air reduces measured tire pressure. A practical rule is that pressure changes by roughly 1 PSI for every 10°F change in ambient temperature, although actual readings also reflect ordinary air loss, valve condition, and leaks. An Indiana January running near 20°F after the tires were adjusted at 60°F in October can leave them about 4 PSI lower even if no puncture is present. Check every tire with an accurate gauge when the tire is cold, including the spare, rather than assuming the fall setting will remain correct through February.

Use the trailer’s certification label, tire-and-loading information, owner’s manual, and tire manufacturer’s load-and-inflation information to determine the correct cold pressure. The pressure molded into the sidewall is the pressure associated with the tire’s rated maximum load; it is not automatically the correct target for every installation. On many ST trailer applications, the trailer manufacturer’s specified pressure does match that sidewall value, but the trailer label remains the first reference. Common 15-inch and 16-inch trailer tires may call for substantially different pressures depending on size and load range, so do not apply one 50-to-80 PSI range to every trailer. Never exceed the wheel’s pressure rating or the tire’s maximum cold-inflation limit.

Inspect the tread, both sidewalls, bead area, valve stems, and the spaces between dual tires where applicable. Replace a tire with exposed cord, a bulge, belt or tread separation, impact damage, severe checking, a leaking valve, or cracks deep enough to expose reinforcing material. Tread depth alone does not establish that a lightly used trailer tire is safe. Read the DOT date code and follow the tire and trailer manufacturers’ age-related inspection and replacement guidance. A tire that has spent years outdoors may have significant heat, UV, ozone, and internal casing damage even when the tread still looks nearly new.

Long storage under a heavy load can contribute to temporary flat spotting and can worsen existing tire or casing problems. Empty the trailer before storage unless the trailer and storage plan specifically require otherwise. Keep the tires at the specified cold pressure, park on a clean, firm, well-drained surface, and use tire pads or cradles to separate the rubber from wet soil, sharp gravel, petroleum residue, or frozen mud. Moving the trailer enough to change the contact patch every four to six weeks can help when it can be done safely. If you choose to remove the tire load completely, use properly rated jack stands at manufacturer-approved frame points, chock the trailer, work on stable ground, and never rely on the tongue jack, hydraulic jack, axle tube, or temporary lifting jack as the sole long-term support.

Battery (If Applicable)

A trailer-mounted battery may power the breakaway system, dump hydraulics, a winch, an electric jack, interior lighting, or other 12V accessories. It normally does not supply the electric service brakes during ordinary towing; those brakes receive controlled power from the tow vehicle through the brake controller and trailer connector. The small trailer battery is primarily responsible for applying electric brakes during an accidental breakaway, while dump, winch, and accessory trailers may carry a much larger deep-cycle battery. Identify what the battery powers before disconnecting it, and never move the trailer on a public road until every required breakaway component has been restored to operating condition.

For conventional flooded lead-acid or AGM batteries, disconnect parasitic loads and fully charge the battery before storage. Remove it when practical and store it upright in a cool, dry, ventilated location protected from children, pets, sparks, and open flame. A deeply discharged lead-acid battery is vulnerable to both sulfation and freezing. Exact freezing temperature varies with electrolyte concentration and state of charge, but a fully charged battery may remain unfrozen near -75°F, while a discharged battery can freeze around 15°F. That difference matters during an ordinary southern Indiana winter.

Use a quality automatic maintainer that is approved for the battery’s voltage, chemistry, capacity, and storage environment. A maintainer is preferable to an old-style charger that continuously applies current, but it still should not be treated as something that never needs inspection. Check the battery, charger, cord, electrolyte level on serviceable flooded batteries, and terminal condition periodically. Clean corrosion with the battery disconnected, wear eye protection, and prevent cleaning solution or debris from entering the cells. When removing a conventional negative-ground battery, disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last.

If the trailer has a lithium iron phosphate battery for hydraulics, a winch, interior power, or a compatible breakaway system, follow that battery manufacturer’s storage state-of-charge and temperature instructions rather than applying lead-acid rules. Recommended storage charge varies among lithium products. Do not leave the battery at an excessively low state of charge where the battery-management system’s own draw can eventually pull it below recovery voltage. Most LiFePO4 batteries can discharge in colder conditions than they can safely accept a charge, and charging below the battery’s specified low-temperature limit can permanently damage the cells. Use only a compatible charger and verify whether the battery has low-temperature charging protection or an internal heater.

Coupler, Chains, and Hitch Hardware

The coupler, hitch ball, gooseneck ball, lunette ring, or fifth-wheel connection is the trailer’s primary attachment to the tow vehicle. Corrosion, incorrect adjustment, mismatched ball size, worn locking parts, and damaged mounting hardware are safety problems, not minor inconveniences. Clean the hitch connection before storage and inspect the latch, pivot points, retaining pin, adjustable channel, bolts, welds, and surrounding frame for cracks, distortion, looseness, or unusual wear.

For a conventional ball coupler, wipe the socket clean and apply the coupler manufacturer’s recommended grease to the ball-contact surface and latch mechanism. A thin, complete film is more useful than packing the cavity with excessive grease that holds grit and water. Confirm that the coupler and ball are the same size and that both are rated for the trailer. Inspect safety chains, frame attachments, hooks, spring latches, and breakaway-cable mounting separately. Replace a chain or hook that is cracked, stretched, bent, deeply gouged, severely corroded, improperly repaired, or unable to latch securely. Do not apply a generic lifting-chain wear percentage to trailer safety chains or repair a damaged safety chain by casual welding.

Inspect the tongue jack, swivel jack, drop leg, landing gear, and stabilizer equipment as applicable. Lubricate grease fittings, gears, pivot points, or exposed screw threads only as directed by the jack manufacturer; some enclosed jacks are sealed and should not be disassembled or filled with an unapproved lubricant. Clean road grit before applying fresh grease, retract exposed inner tubes when the design permits it, and make sure drop-leg pins and retaining clips are present. The tongue jack supports the tongue during hitching and parking, but it is not a substitute for properly rated frame supports during under-trailer service.

Rust Prevention and the Frame

Southern Indiana roads are treated with salt, brine, and other liquid deicers during winter weather. Residue works into seams, cross members, fasteners, suspension hangers, wiring clips, couplers, and areas where steel components overlap. Wash the trailer before storage, especially if it has already been exposed to winter roads, fertilizer, manure, concrete residue, soil, or other corrosive material. Rinse the frame, tongue, cross members, fenders, suspension area, dump-body underside, and rear structure thoroughly. Avoid directing a high-pressure stream into wheel seals, hub caps, electrical connectors, breakaway switches, hydraulic breathers, batteries, or brake assemblies.

Allow the trailer to dry completely before applying touch-up coating or corrosion protection. Remove loose rust and failed coating from damaged areas, feather the surrounding edge, and use a primer and topcoat compatible with the original finish. A removable lanolin- or wax-based corrosion inhibitor can provide useful seasonal protection on appropriate exposed steel and hardware, but coverage and durability vary with preparation, weather, road use, and washing. Keep corrosion products off brake friction surfaces, brake magnets, drums, rotors, tire tread, electrical contacts, identification labels, and deck areas where a slippery film could create a loading hazard.

Diamond C trailers use the DM Difference Maker Coating System, a multi-stage process that includes steel-shot blasting, a staged wash and pretreatment process, force drying, zinc-epoxy primer powder, and an ultra-durable powder topcoat. That system offers strong adhesion and corrosion resistance, but no steel coating is immune to damage from chains, buckets, equipment tracks, gravel, or road debris. Inspect for chips that reach bare steel, clean and dry the area, and use a compatible touch-up product matched as closely as practical to the original coating. Treating a small chip promptly helps prevent corrosion from spreading beneath the surrounding finish.

Pay particular attention to the tongue, coupler channel, stake pockets, rub rails, suspension hangers, battery box, hydraulic pump enclosure, dump-body pivot area, and every location where two steel surfaces overlap. On trailers with treated pine, hardwood, or engineered wood decking, inspect the board edges, underside, fasteners, floor retainers, and steel flanges. Remove packed dirt and organic material that hold moisture against the frame. Tighten or replace loose and damaged deck fasteners with the correct type, but do not trap moisture under an impermeable coating applied to wet wood.

Trailer Cover: Use One or Don’t

Here is the honest take: a poorly installed cover can be worse than no cover. A non-breathable tarp laid directly against painted steel or aluminum can trap condensation, abrade the finish in the wind, hold leaves against the roof, and create pockets where snow or rainwater collects. If the trailer will be covered, use a breathable cover intended for the trailer’s shape, or create a secure air gap and enough slope for precipitation to drain without pooling.

Measure the trailer’s body length, width, and height rather than buying by deck length alone. Account for roof vents, ladder racks, spare tires, fenders, front noses, and other projections that can tear the fabric. Use padded straps or the cover’s specified tie-down points instead of ropes that rub against the coating. Secure every loose section against Midwest wind and inspect the cover after storms, heavy snow, and freeze-thaw events. Remove accumulated snow before its weight stretches the cover or loads a roof that was not designed for storage loads.

If you are storing a Wells Cargo, Legend, United, or another enclosed cargo trailer, begin with the roof seams, vents, doors, exterior sealant, and drainage paths rather than assuming the walls make winter preparation unnecessary. A properly fitted breathable cover can reduce UV and debris exposure, but it must not block required vents or trap condensation inside. Remove damp cargo, sweep the floor, check door seals, leave only the ventilation recommended by the manufacturer, and avoid a loose roof-only tarp that can saw across roof edges and trim in the wind.

Storage Location and Position

Indoor storage is the best option when it is available. A dry pole barn, equipment building, or suitable enclosed storage unit protects the trailer from precipitation, UV exposure, wind-driven debris, falling branches, and repeated wetting. An unheated building may still experience freezing temperatures, so batteries, hydraulics, tires, and condensation still need attention. Before renting a covered bay, verify the entrance height and width, trailer length, access surface, security, and any facility restrictions on batteries, maintenance, or commercial equipment.

If the trailer must remain outside, select firm, high, well-drained ground and remove unnecessary cargo. Chock the wheels in both directions and stabilize the tongue on a solid footing that will not sink during a thaw. Position the trailer according to its drainage design so water does not remain trapped in a deck channel, dump body, toolbox, enclosed-trailer roof depression, or rear threshold. Store dump bodies fully lowered and mechanically secured, with hydraulic pressure relieved as the manufacturer directs. Do not leave a raised dump body supported only by the hydraulic system.

After cleaning and lubricating a ball coupler, use a fitted, non-absorbent coupler cover that sheds water while allowing the area to dry. Do not stuff the socket with a rag, paper, or open-cell foam; absorbent material can retain moisture, freeze in place, contaminate the grease, and encourage corrosion. Keep the electrical plug off the ground under a protective cap, but do not seal existing moisture inside the connector.

Quick storage checklist: cargo removed, bearings inspected or serviced on schedule, tires inflated and checked for age and damage, battery disconnected or maintained correctly, coupler and hitch hardware cleaned and lubricated, safety chains and breakaway equipment inspected, frame washed and damaged coating treated, dump body fully lowered, wheels chocked, and the cover secured or the trailer stored under suitable shelter.

What to Check When Spring Comes

Winterizing only pays off if you return the trailer to service properly. Before the first pull of the season, allow enough time for a complete inspection rather than assuming a quick lap around the trailer is sufficient. Work through these items before loading:

  • Check the cold pressure, valve stems, tread, sidewalls, DOT date codes, wheel condition, and spare tire; then torque the wheel fasteners to the specified value
  • Confirm the coupler latch operates correctly, the hitch ball is the correct size and rating, safety chains cross and attach properly, and the breakaway cable has an independent attachment point
  • Test running lights, turn signals, brake lights, electric or hydraulic service brakes, the tow-vehicle brake controller, breakaway battery, switch, plug, and ground circuit as applicable
  • Inspect every hub for seal leakage, abnormal looseness, rough rotation, noise, and signs of overheating; check suspension hardware, springs, equalizers, hangers, and U-bolts for damage or movement
  • Look for new rust, coating damage, loose deck boards, hydraulic leaks, damaged wiring, animal nests, water intrusion, and anything that could interfere with ramps, gates, jacks, or the dump-body mechanism

If the trailer uses electric drum brakes, connect it to a compatible tow vehicle and perform a controlled low-speed function test in a safe, level area before highway use. Weak braking may come from adjustment, wiring resistance, poor grounds, contamination, worn shoes, drum condition, or magnet wear; magnets do not simply lose “adhesion strength” because the trailer sat through winter. Current Diamond C premium lines, including FMAX, HDT, LPT, LPX, WDT, and DEC, use Lippert axles as standard, so follow the Lippert documentation for the installed axle, hub, and brake package. Some heavier configurations use oil-bath hubs, hydraulic disc brakes, electric-over-hydraulic systems, or other equipment that requires a different procedure. Indiana requires qualifying trailers at or above the applicable 3,000 lb gross-weight threshold to have adequate brakes controllable from the tow vehicle and an automatic breakaway function, making the brake and breakaway checks essential rather than optional.
