Top 10 Accessories Every Trailer Owner Needs

You drive off the lot with a brand-new trailer and immediately start making a list. Not of places to haul, but of everything you need to tow, load, park, and secure it correctly. A lock. A matching spare. Wheel chocks. Tie-downs with enough working load limit for the cargo. Most trailer owners discover the gaps after their first few loads, but there is no reason to learn every lesson on the shoulder of I-69 or in the middle of a busy job site.

These ten accessories cover safety, security, roadside readiness, and everyday convenience. Some items, including required lamps, brakes, and a functioning breakaway system on applicable trailers, should already be installed before the trailer is operated on a public highway. In those cases, the owner’s job is to inspect, test, maintain, and replace the equipment when necessary rather than treat it as an optional upgrade.

1. Wheel Chocks

Park a loaded trailer on even a slight incline without chocking the wheels and you are relying entirely on the tow vehicle, jack, coupler, or surface friction to keep several thousand pounds from moving. Choose solid rubber or heavy-duty urethane chocks that are appropriately sized for the trailer’s tires and rated by the manufacturer for the loaded application. A small plastic chock intended for a lawn tractor is not suitable for a loaded dump, equipment, car-hauler, or gooseneck trailer. Before disconnecting, park on firm ground, apply the tow vehicle’s parking brake, keep the trailer coupled, and place the chocks securely against the tires. When the trailer will remain unhooked, chock against movement in both directions. Tandem-axle trailers can also use between-the-wheel chocks, but those do not replace properly positioned ground chocks when the trailer is parked on a grade. Store the chocks in a dedicated holder, tongue box, or other secure location so they are always available and cannot bounce onto the highway.

2. Spare Tire and Proper Mount

A matching spare does not prevent a tire failure, but it can turn a stranded-trailer situation into a manageable roadside repair. Do not assume that every utility trailer uses an ST175/80R13 or ST205/75R15 tire. Trailer tire sizes, wheel diameters, load ranges, ply ratings, and inflation pressures vary widely, especially across heavy-duty equipment, dump, and FMAX gooseneck configurations. Use the trailer’s certification or tire-information label, build sheet, and tire sidewall to identify the correct tire size and recommended cold inflation pressure. The spare wheel must also have the correct bolt pattern, pilot opening, width, offset, stud compatibility, and load rating. Use a tire and wheel assembly with capacity equal to or greater than the original equipment specification unless the trailer manufacturer approves another combination. The carrier must be rated for the assembly and mounted where it will not interfere with the coupler, jack, wiring, breakaway cable, ramps, dump body, or tow vehicle. Check the spare’s pressure and condition during routine inspections; a flat, weather-cracked, or incorrectly matched spare is of little value. Carry the correct lug wrench, a jack suitable for the loaded trailer, wheel chocks, and any tools required to access an under-frame or winch-mounted spare.

3. Tie-Down Straps

Ratchet straps are useful for many loads, but their working load limit matters more than their width, color, brand name, or advertised break strength. A common 2-inch ratchet strap may be marked with a 3,333-pound working load limit and a 10,000-pound assembly break strength, but the lower working load limit is the number used when planning cargo securement. Never calculate securement capacity from break strength. Select the end fittings for the trailer’s actual anchor points, and confirm that the D-rings, stake pockets, rub rail, pipe spools, track, or other anchors are also strong enough for the load. Commercial cargo-securement rules generally require the aggregate working load limit of the tiedowns securing an article to equal at least one-half of the article’s weight, with additional rules for the number, placement, and type of tiedowns used on vehicles, machinery, and longer cargo. Even for personal towing, secure the load against forward, rearward, sideways, and vertical movement rather than relying on one strap over the middle. Use properly rated chains and binders where straps are unsuitable, especially around sharp edges, hot components, tracked machinery, or concentrated heavy equipment. Inspect every strap for cuts, abrasion, melted fibers, damaged stitching, bent hooks, corrosion, and an unreadable rating tag. Remove damaged equipment from service instead of saving it for a lighter load.

4. Coupler Lock

A coupler lock is a useful theft deterrent, but no portable lock makes a trailer impossible to steal. The correct design depends on the coupler, not simply the hitch-ball diameter. Standard bumper-pull ball couplers, adjustable-channel couplers, pintle-ring setups, and gooseneck couplers require different lock styles. Choose a lock that fits closely around the actual coupler and does not leave enough clearance for the latch or adjustable components to be manipulated. When the trailer is stored, combine the coupler lock with a hardened latch lock, wheel lock, secured safety chains, good lighting, and a parking position that makes access difficult. When towing, use the coupler’s correct safety pin or locking pin and a properly rated receiver-hitch pin without substituting a storage lock that interferes with normal coupler operation. Keep the lock cylinder clean and lubricated according to the manufacturer’s instructions, especially after winter road-salt exposure. A lock is most effective when it is correctly fitted and used every time, including during short stops when an unattended trailer would otherwise be easy to connect and remove.

5. Trailer Jack

A trailer jack should be selected by the maximum vertical load it must lift and support, not by trailer GVWR alone. The jack normally handles the loaded tongue or pin weight rather than the trailer’s entire weight, so a properly rated 2,000-pound jack may be suitable for one trailer while being undersized for another trailer with a similar GVWR but more weight concentrated at the front. Check the manufacturer’s lift-capacity and static-capacity ratings, then compare them with the trailer’s maximum expected tongue or pin weight. Also verify the mounting style, tube dimensions, travel, retracted ground clearance, handle clearance, drop-leg adjustment, and footplate size. Light utility trailers commonly use swivel or A-frame jacks, while heavy equipment, dump, and gooseneck trailers may use square drop-leg, two-speed, dual, or hydraulic jack systems. A broad footplate or properly rated support pad is important on gravel, asphalt, soil, or other surfaces where a narrow jack foot can sink. Never use a tongue jack as a substitute for jack stands when servicing wheels, brakes, axles, or suspension, and never work beneath a trailer supported only by its tongue jack. For a heavy Diamond C configuration, use the jack system specified for that model and package rather than choosing capacity from a universal fitment chart.

6. Breakaway Kit

This is required safety equipment on applicable trailers, not an optional convenience accessory. Indiana Code 9-19-3-3 requires a trailer or semitrailer with a gross weight of at least 3,000 pounds, when operated on a highway, to have brakes that can be applied by the driver from the tow vehicle and that are designed to apply automatically if the trailer accidentally breaks away. The components depend on the braking system. An electric-brake setup typically uses a breakaway switch, pull cable, dedicated rechargeable battery, charger, wiring, and the trailer’s electric brakes. Electric-over-hydraulic systems require compatible emergency power and actuator controls, while surge-brake systems use their own approved breakaway mechanism. A compliant new braked trailer should already have the appropriate system installed, so inspect it before the first tow instead of assuming that an inexpensive universal kit is an adequate replacement. Attach the breakaway cable to a suitable independent point on the tow vehicle or fixed hitch structure as directed by the manufacturer, not to the hitch ball, trailer safety chain, or another component that could separate with the trailer. Check the battery charge, switch, pin, cable routing, and wiring before towing. Follow the kit manufacturer’s testing procedure; many electric systems require the trailer connector to be unplugged from the tow vehicle before the pin is pulled so the brake controller is not damaged. Reinsert the pin promptly after the test, recharge the battery as required, and never use the breakaway system as a parking brake.

7. LED Lighting Upgrade

LED trailer lighting is no longer an automatic aftermarket upgrade on a modern premium trailer. Current Diamond C trailers come standard with LED lighting, so owners of newer models should focus on inspection, replacement, wiring protection, and useful auxiliary lighting rather than replacing functioning factory lamps. On an older trailer that still uses incandescent units, a complete LED assembly can provide improved visibility, lower current draw, longer service life, and better resistance to vibration. Use compliant tail, stop, turn, clearance, side-marker, identification, license-plate, and reverse-light assemblies that match the required function, color, mounting location, and trailer width. Do not install a generic LED bulb in a damaged or poorly sealed housing and assume the result is roadworthy. Repair corroded grounds, loose connectors, exposed splices, damaged lenses, and failed wiring at the same time. Trailers 80 inches or more in overall width require additional clearance and identification lighting, so removing or relocating lamps during a conversion can create a compliance problem. Auxiliary flood or work lights can be valuable for loading after dark, but they should be independently controlled, aimed away from traffic, and installed without obscuring or impairing the required highway lights and reflectors. Test running lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and the license-plate lamp with the actual tow vehicle before every trip.

8. Tongue Jack with Crank Handle or Electric Lift

A powered jack can save time for an owner who connects and disconnects frequently, but it must be matched to the trailer and electrical system. Manual A-frame, top-wind, side-wind, swivel, and drop-leg jacks remain dependable choices when they have adequate lift capacity, sufficient travel, a stable footplate, and enough clearance for the tow vehicle and coupler. A 3,500-pound electric A-frame jack is common in the RV and bumper-pull market, but that rating is not automatically correct for every equipment or cargo trailer. Base the selection on maximum loaded tongue weight and the trailer manufacturer’s mounting requirements. Most electric tongue jacks require a properly fused 12-volt supply from an onboard trailer battery or another approved power arrangement. The tow vehicle’s 7-way auxiliary circuit may charge or support the trailer’s battery, but an electric jack should not be purchased on the assumption that it simply plugs into any 7-way connector and operates without proper wiring, battery capacity, grounding, and circuit protection. Choose a unit with an accessible manual override so the trailer can still be raised if the battery is discharged or the motor fails. For compatible heavy-duty Diamond C dump, equipment, or gooseneck configurations, an approved hydraulic jack system may be a better frequent-use upgrade than adapting a light-duty electric tongue jack.

9. Toolbox or Tongue Box

Every work trailer benefits from a secure place for straps, binders, gloves, wheel-chocking equipment, spare breakaway parts, a tire-pressure gauge, flashlight, grease gun, lug wrench, and basic hand tools. Before ordering a universal tongue box, measure the available space with the coupler, jack, tow vehicle, tailgate, safety chains, wiring junction, breakaway cable, battery, and any dump-body movement taken into account. Aluminum boxes are generally lighter and naturally corrosion-resistant, while steel boxes can be extremely durable but add more tongue weight and depend on a sound coating to prevent rust. Neither material is automatically waterproof, so look for a weather-resistant lid, continuous hinge, suitable seal, drain design, and a lock that does not leave the contents exposed through a weak hasp. Mount the box to approved structural locations with appropriate hardware. Do not drill through an engineered frame flange, enclosed wiring harness, hydraulic line, or other critical component without manufacturer or dealer guidance. Account for both the empty box and everything stored inside it when calculating payload and tongue weight. Keep fuel, chemicals, oily rags, and other hazardous materials in containers and locations intended for them rather than mixing them with electrical components or the breakaway battery. Many Diamond C models and option packages already include integrated storage, so check the individual build before adding another box.

10. Loading Ramp

If you haul a mower, ATV, vehicle, skid steer, tractor, excavator, or other wheeled or tracked equipment, the loading system must be chosen for the specific machine and trailer. Do not rely only on a broad capacity statement such as a total rating per pair. Confirm how the manufacturer defines that rating, whether the load must be evenly distributed, the maximum supported axle or wheel load, the required ramp spacing, and whether the ramp is approved for wheeled, rubber-tracked, or steel-tracked equipment. Ramp length should be selected from the trailer’s loaded deck height, the machine’s ground clearance, wheelbase, breakover angle, and maximum climbing capability. There is no universal rule that every 14-inch deck needs an 8-foot ramp. Use ramps with a positive attachment system that fits the trailer’s designated ramp supports, and never depend on a loose ramp resting against a rail. Keep the trailer coupled to the tow vehicle while loading unless the manufacturer specifically directs otherwise, park on firm and level ground, set the tow vehicle’s parking brake, chock the wheels, and deploy rear stabilizer jacks when the trailer or loading system requires them. Current Diamond C trailers may be configured with integrated systems such as MAX Ramps, XDR Ramps, or an X-Ramp, depending on the compatible model and intended load. Integrated, model-specific ramps are generally preferable to universal portable ramps because the hinge, support structure, stabilizers, approach angle, and transport latches are engineered as a system.

A Note on Buying Order

Not every trailer owner needs to purchase all ten items separately. Modern trailers may already include LED lights, a compliant breakaway system, a properly rated jack, a spare mount, integrated storage, or a factory loading system. Start by comparing the trailer’s build sheet and certification label with the equipment physically installed, then prioritize anything needed for safe towing and cargo securement.

What to Skip (For Now)

The accessory market includes plenty of products that look useful but provide no verifiable capacity, fitment, or safety information. Skip unmarked straps, ramps with unclear load-rating conditions, poorly fitted universal coupler locks, spare carriers that are not rated for the wheel and tire assembly, and electrical accessories supplied without proper fusing or weather-resistant connections. Avoid drilling into an engineered trailer frame or altering required lamps, reflectors, brakes, couplers, jacks, or safety equipment without checking the manufacturer’s instructions. Cosmetic hitch covers and decorative accessories can wait. Spend first on equipment that keeps the trailer stationary when parked, secures the load, maintains legal braking and lighting, deters theft, and helps you respond safely to a tire or equipment problem.
