Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations apply to covered commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce and contain their own brake-equipment, automatic-braking, inspection, maintenance, and performance requirements. State commercial rules may apply as well. Commercial status is based on the operation and vehicle definitions, not simply whether the driver happens to be paid on a particular day.
