You get to the barn, load two 16-hand warmbloods, and pull onto the highway. Ten minutes later, you’re wondering whether you measured the usable stall length and interior height before you bought the trailer. Most horse owners do their homework on price and brand. Fewer pay enough attention to the numbers that directly affect fit, balance, comfort, and safety: clear stall width, breast-bar-to-butt-bar length, interior headroom, divider placement, trailer weight, and the cargo capacity shown on the exact trailer’s certification label.
Get those numbers wrong and you can end up with a horse that braces or scrambles through the trip, arrives stressed and sweating, or cannot stand in a natural posture without contacting a divider, bar, or ceiling fixture. A trailer can have enough advertised stalls and still be too small or too lightly rated for the horses you intend to haul. This guide cuts through the confusion so you can match the trailer to your horses, tow vehicle, and real loaded weight before you sign anything.
Stall Dimensions: Width and Length
Start by separating trailer width from individual stall width. A trailer advertised as 6’9″ or 7 feet wide is not giving each horse that much room. Current two-horse straight-load designs commonly provide individual clear stall widths in roughly the upper-30-inch to 40-inch range, while many current slant-load models publish stall widths around 39 to 43 inches. For example, current Sundowner straight-load specifications list 38-inch stalls, while Featherlite and Exiss offer current configurations with approximately 40- to 43-inch stalls. Padding, dividers, wall liners, feed mangers, and hardware can reduce the space the horse actually uses, so the clear measurement matters more than the nominal trailer width.
A slant-load layout positions each horse diagonally and can package several stalls into a shorter trailer than an equivalent straight-load arrangement. Many horses travel comfortably in that orientation, but a slant stall is not automatically larger or safer. Current full-size slant-load stalls are generally much wider than 28 to 32 inches; published widths around 39 to 43 inches are common on reputable present-day models. More importantly, the apparent diagonal wall-to-wall measurement may overstate usable body length. Measure along the line where the horse will actually stand, from the effective chest or shoulder stop to the butt bar, divider, or rear wall.
Straight-load trailers should be evaluated the same way. Do not assume that a 10-foot horse compartment provides a 10-foot stall. Dressing rooms, ramps, rear curtains, mangers, breast bars, butt bars, and wall angles all affect usable space. Measure your horse in a relaxed standing posture and confirm that the horse can stand without its chest being forced into the breast bar or its hindquarters continuously pressing against the butt bar. The horse must also have enough space to spread its feet, shift weight, and lower or reposition its head for balance.
For warmbloods, draft crosses, long-bodied Thoroughbreds, and horses above about 16.2 hands, look for a manufacturer-designated large-horse configuration rather than relying only on the number of stalls. That may mean a wider individual stall, extended stall length, taller dividers, more shoulder room, and greater interior height. A seven-foot-wide trailer can still have stalls that are too short for a long-bodied horse, while a carefully designed 6’9″-wide straight-load may fit that same horse well. The exact floorplan controls the fit.
Interior Headroom
Interior height is one of the easiest specifications to compare and one of the easiest to misunderstand. Current full-size horse trailers are commonly offered with interior heights of 7 feet, 7’2″, 7’6″, or 7’8″, depending on the manufacturer and floorplan. Seven feet may be appropriate for many stock-type horses, but it should not be treated as a universal standard for every horse under a certain number of hands.
Large warmbloods, tall Thoroughbreds, draft crosses, and full draft horses frequently need 7’6″ or 7’8″ of clear height, and some custom trailers are built to 8 feet. One hand equals 4 inches, so a 17-hand horse measures 68 inches at the withers. That is not the same as the horse’s normal head height. The poll, ears, neck posture, and head movement extend well above the withers, especially when the horse raises its head in response to a sound, turn, bump, or change in speed.
A useful fitting rule is to provide approximately 10 inches of clearance above the horse’s head in its normal resting position. Measure the actual horse rather than calculating from wither height alone. Stand the horse square on level ground, observe its relaxed head position, and measure to the top of the poll or ears as appropriate. Horses that naturally travel with a high head carriage may need more room than another horse of the same measured height.
When you’re comparing trailers on the lot, bring a tape measure and identify the lowest usable point above the stall. A brochure may list the nominal inside height, but roof bows, vents, lights, door headers, divider hardware, and a curved roof profile can reduce clearance in the area where the horse’s head will be. Measure at the horse’s standing position rather than only at the center peak of the roof. A few inches can make a meaningful difference to a large horse that needs room to balance and move its neck naturally.
2-Horse vs. 4-Horse: More Than a Capacity Question
The obvious difference is how many horses fit. But the choice between a 2-horse and a 4-horse trailer also changes the trailer’s empty weight, cargo capacity, hitch load, overall length, turning path, braking requirements, and the amount of payload your tow vehicle must carry.
Current two-horse bumper-pull trailers vary substantially by design. A current Exiss 720 BP slant-load, for example, is published at 7 feet wide, 7’2″ high, approximately 2,900 pounds empty, and 7,000 pounds GVWR. Featherlite’s current Model 9651 is a two- or three-horse slant-load stock-combo design that is 6’7″ wide, 7 feet high, and approximately 2,700 pounds empty in its two-horse configuration, with 40 3/4-inch stalls and tandem 3,500-pound braked axles. Large-horse straight-load models can be taller and heavier; the current Exiss 724 ST is 7 feet wide, 7’8″ high, approximately 3,100 pounds empty, and rated at 7,000 pounds GVWR.
Those examples show why you cannot estimate capacity from the stall count alone. A 7,000-pound-GVWR trailer weighing 2,900 pounds in its published base configuration has a theoretical cargo allowance of about 4,100 pounds before accounting for options or anything added after manufacture. Two 1,200-pound horses use 2,400 pounds of that allowance. Mats, a spare tire, tack, hay, water, feed, tools, and installed accessories consume part of the remaining capacity. The exact trailer may weigh more than the brochure figure, so use the VIN-specific label and a certified scale whenever the margin is close.
A current four-horse non-living-quarters gooseneck can be lighter than the old rule-of-thumb figures many buyers still repeat. The current Exiss 7400 GN slant-load, for example, is published at 12,000 pounds GVWR and approximately 4,900 pounds empty, with tandem 6,000-pound axles. That produces a theoretical payload of about 7,100 pounds before options. Four 1,200-pound horses plus 500 pounds of tack, hay, and supplies would total about 5,300 pounds of cargo and approximately 10,200 pounds of loaded trailer weight. A four-horse living-quarters model may weigh several thousand pounds more and can have far less remaining capacity despite a higher GVWR.
A loaded four-horse gooseneck will usually point buyers toward a properly equipped heavy-duty pickup, but the truck’s badge is not the rating. Check the exact truck’s door-jamb payload label, GVWR, rear GAWR, GCWR, gooseneck rating, tire capacities, and installed hitch rating. A gooseneck may place roughly 15% to 25% of its loaded weight in the bed, depending on the trailer and loading. A 12,000-pound loaded trailer could therefore place a substantial load on the truck before passengers, fuel, tools, and bed cargo are counted.
A four-horse trailer is not inherently unstable when partially loaded. Problems arise when the remaining load is placed in a position that creates too little or too much hitch weight, overloads one side, or exceeds an axle rating. Follow the trailer manufacturer’s loading instructions for the exact floorplan. On many slant-load trailers, the forward stall is loaded first. On many side-by-side straight-load trailers, a single horse is placed on the driver’s side, but model-specific instructions take priority. Do not add improvised ballast to correct poor handling. Use a scale, load the trailer as designed, and correct the underlying weight-distribution problem.
Weight Per Horse: The Math You Can’t Skip
Horse weight varies with breed, height, frame, muscle, age, and body condition. The following ranges are useful for early planning, but they are not substitutes for weighing the individual animal:

Owners routinely underestimate large-horse body weight, sometimes by more than 100 pounds. A livestock scale is the best source. A properly used weight tape or a breed-appropriate body-measurement equation is better than guessing, but it still produces an estimate. When trailer capacity is tight, build in a meaningful reserve rather than treating the estimate as exact.
To calculate whether a trailer can handle your load, start with the trailer’s GVWR and subtract its actual empty weight as equipped. That gives you its available cargo capacity at that moment. The empty weight should include installed options, mats, spare tires, batteries, propane equipment, permanent cabinets, and other equipment that may not be included in a base brochure figure. For living-quarters trailers, account for fresh water, wastewater, propane, food, and personal supplies as well.
Then add the weight of every horse, saddle, tack trunk, hay bale, feed bag, water container, generator, tool, and piece of cargo carried by the trailer. The trailer’s entire gross weight includes the portion supported by the hitch or gooseneck ball; pin or tongue weight does not create extra trailer capacity. You must remain within the trailer’s GVWR, each axle’s GAWR, tire and wheel ratings, the coupler rating, and the tow vehicle’s ratings at the same time.
Example: a current four-horse gooseneck with a 12,000-pound GVWR and an estimated base empty weight of 4,900 pounds begins with approximately 7,100 pounds of theoretical cargo capacity. Four warmbloods averaging 1,300 pounds total 5,200 pounds. Add 700 pounds of saddles, hay, water, feed, and equipment, and the cargo total reaches 5,900 pounds. The estimated loaded trailer weight is 10,800 pounds, leaving about 1,200 pounds below GVWR before any uncounted options or supplies. A certified scale ticket is still needed to verify the actual axle and hitch loads.
Swap those warmbloods for four draft horses weighing 1,900 pounds each and the horses alone total 7,600 pounds. That already exceeds the theoretical cargo allowance before mats, hay, tack, or water are considered. A trailer can physically contain four horses and still be legally and mechanically overloaded.
Draft-specific horse trailers and properly configured stock-combo trailers are built around larger stalls, higher GVWRs, suitable axle and tire capacity, and floors designed for heavier point loads. Do not select one from GVWR alone. Compare crossmember spacing, floor construction, divider strength, wall protection, ramp rating, door opening, tire capacity, and the manufacturer’s intended use. A tandem-axle trailer with the correct rating may be suitable; a third axle is not automatically required, and axle count by itself does not prove that the floor or stalls are appropriate for drafts.
Bumper-Pull vs. Gooseneck for Horse Hauling
For many two-horse owners, a bumper-pull is the practical choice. It leaves the pickup bed available, is usually shorter overall, and can work with a properly rated SUV or pickup when every applicable rating is satisfied. Most full-size horse bumper-pulls use a 2 5/16-inch hitch ball. That ball size is different from the receiver opening, which may also be described as 2 inches. The receiver, ball mount, hitch ball, safety chains, brake controller, and tow vehicle must each be rated for the loaded trailer.
Do not assume that every half-ton truck can safely tow every two-horse trailer. The truck may have enough advertised towing capacity but run out of payload, rear-axle capacity, hitch capacity, or tongue-weight capacity first. Conventional trailer tongue weight is commonly targeted at approximately 10% to 15% of loaded trailer weight, subject to the truck and trailer manufacturers’ instructions. A 7,000-pound loaded bumper-pull could therefore impose roughly 700 to 1,050 pounds of tongue weight before passengers and cargo are added to the tow vehicle.
Gooseneck hitches transfer the trailer’s vertical load into the pickup bed near the rear axle. That arrangement generally provides greater stability and is common on four-horse, six-horse, stock-combo, and living-quarters trailers. The tradeoffs are higher bed load, reduced bed utility, a larger turning envelope, and the need for a correctly installed and rated gooseneck hitch. The trailer will also cut farther inside the truck’s path during tight turns, so clearance around gates, fuel islands, and parked vehicles requires attention.
Some buyers choose a four-horse bumper-pull, and current manufacturers do offer legitimate four-horse bumper-pull floorplans. The important issue is not the stall count by itself but the actual loaded tongue weight and the ratings of the tow vehicle and hitch. A long four-horse bumper-pull can place well over 1,000 pounds on the hitch. Check both weight-carrying and weight-distributing ratings, follow the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements for a weight-distribution system, and verify that the trailer manufacturer permits the chosen equipment.
Indiana requirements also matter. Trailers over 3,000 pounds GVWR must be equipped with brakes under Indiana law, and a functioning breakaway system, brake controller, lights, safety chains, tires, and coupler should be inspected before every trip. For commercial operation, a Class A CDL generally comes into play when the combination has a GCWR or actual gross combination weight of 26,001 pounds or more and the towed unit has a GVWR or actual gross weight over 10,000 pounds. The 26,001-pound threshold applies to the combination, not to the trailer by itself. Personal, recreational, agricultural, interstate, and business use can be treated differently under state and federal rules, so verify the rules that apply to the actual trip. Indiana purchasers generally have a 45-day penalty-free window to complete trailer title and registration requirements.
A Few Things to Check Before You Buy
- Interior width vs. stall width. The advertised trailer width is not the width available to each horse. Current straight-load examples include a 6’9″-wide trailer with 38-inch stalls and a 7-foot-wide trailer with approximately 40-inch stalls. Current slant-load examples may publish 39-, 40-, or 43-inch stalls. Measure clear width between padding and dividers, shoulder clearance, breast-bar position, butt-bar position, and the narrowest point through which the horse must load.
- Floor material and condition. Modern horse-trailer floors may use treated lumber, interlocking aluminum planks, aluminum extrusions, composite products, or proprietary flooring systems. Rubber mats are common, but wood under mats is not universal. On a used trailer, lift every removable mat and inspect the full floor, seams, crossmembers, fasteners, welds, corrosion, urine damage, soft spots, and the underside. Aluminum does not rust, but it can corrode or crack, especially where dissimilar metals, trapped moisture, or road chemicals are present.
- Axle rating vs. GVWR. Read the certification label rather than calculating GVWR from axle size alone. The trailer manufacturer assigns GVWR, and part of the loaded trailer weight is carried by the tow vehicle through the tongue or gooseneck. For that reason, a trailer’s GVWR can sometimes be higher than the simple sum of its axle ratings without being incorrectly labeled. What matters is that the trailer never exceeds GVWR, no individual axle exceeds its GAWR, and the tires, wheels, suspension, coupler, hitch, and tow vehicle remain within their ratings. Use a scale to measure total trailer weight, individual axle-group weight, and hitch or pin load.
- Ventilation. Horses generate substantial heat, moisture, dust, and ammonia. Look for one or more adjustable roof vents per stall, adequately sized side windows or air gaps, safe window bars or grills, and a layout that allows air to move through the horse compartment. Ventilation must be adjusted for temperature, speed, rain, and the horse’s condition. Do not block airflow with unsecured hay, blankets, or tack, and do not assume that opening every window is appropriate in freezing weather or for a wet, clipped horse.
- Tack room dimensions. A dressing-room short-wall measurement does not tell you the entire usable floor area. Wheel wells, the gooseneck structure, door swing, folding rear tack, saddle-rack depth, spare tire, batteries, and water equipment all consume space. Bring the saddles or measure them before buying. Walk-through doors can improve access, but any opening into the horse compartment must latch securely and must not allow cargo to fall or swing into a stall.
Matching Trailer to Horse
If you’re hauling average-sized stock horses and trips are mostly regional, a correctly fitted two-horse bumper-pull may cover the job. Look for enough clear stall width and length, a ceiling that remains approximately 10 inches above each horse’s normal head position, secure breast and butt restraints, protected walls, adequate ventilation, brakes on the required axles, and enough cargo capacity for both horses and all equipment. A nominal 7-foot ceiling may work for many horses, but the horse’s measured head height determines whether it is sufficient.
Pricing has changed substantially from the ranges that were common several years ago. In the 2025-2026 market, many new premium aluminum two-horse bumper-pulls are advertised in roughly the mid-$20,000s to mid-$30,000s before taxes, title, registration, delivery, and optional equipment. Simpler steel models may cost less, while large-horse straight-loads, extensive dressing rooms, custom floors, upgraded windows, and premium finishes can push the price higher. Used-trailer condition varies too much for a single reliable price range. Compare VIN-specific specifications and request an itemized out-the-door quote.
If you’re hauling warmbloods regularly or expect to add another horse, sizing up may make sense, but buying a four-horse trailer does not automatically give each horse more room. Compare stall width, usable stall length, divider height, headroom, and payload on every floorplan. A purpose-built two-horse large-horse straight-load with 7’6″ or 7’8″ headroom may fit two warmbloods better than a compact four-horse slant. Choose a three- or four-horse gooseneck when you need the additional stalls, storage, and capacity, not merely because the larger stall count sounds roomier.
Drafts and miniature horses require opposite dimensions but the same careful fitting process. Drafts need sufficient height, body length, shoulder room, door width, ramp or step-up capacity, floor strength, and payload. Miniatures may need lower dividers, lower butt restraints, appropriately positioned tie points, smaller openings, and barriers they cannot duck under or become trapped beneath. A livestock or stock-combo trailer can work for minis only when it is safely configured for their size and prevents access to unsafe gaps, gates, windows, and full-size horse hardware. Hay bags and nets must be mounted and filled so that a leg, halter, or hoof cannot become entangled.
