You’ve got a skid steer or mini excavator to move and you’re standing in front of two trailers: a 16-footer and a 20-footer. The 20-ft trailer looks like the obvious answer. More deck, more options, right? Not always. The wrong length can mean a trailer that is unnecessarily difficult to maneuver, a combination that exceeds one of your truck or hitch ratings, or a machine that cannot be positioned correctly without sacrificing tongue weight or securement space. Buying too small is expensive, but buying more trailer than your operation needs can create its own problems.
Here’s how to actually pick.
Deck Length Is Not the Same as Load Capacity
This is the part most buyers skip. A 16-ft deck on a properly engineered heavy-duty trailer can have a higher GVWR and more usable payload than a lightly built 20-footer. Length tells you how much loading surface is available. It does not tell you the axle package, frame construction, tire capacity, coupler rating, brake configuration, empty weight, or legal payload.
Diamond C’s current LPX is a low-profile, extreme-duty bumper-pull equipment trailer offered in lengths from 16 to 30 feet and GVWR packages from 15,500 to 24,000 lbs. The LPX 207 package is rated at 15,500 lbs GVWR and uses two 7,000-lb Lippert axles. That package can be configured with either a 16-ft or 20-ft bed, which is an important distinction: the “207” identifies the axle and GVWR package, not the deck length.
So before you count the feet, look at these numbers:
- GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): the maximum loaded weight assigned to the complete trailer by the manufacturer. It includes the trailer, installed options, equipment, attachments, chains, binders, tools, fuel cans, and anything else carried on it.
- Axle rating: the maximum weight the axle or axle group is designed to support. Two 7,000-lb axles provide 14,000 lbs of combined axle capacity, but that does not automatically make the trailer’s GVWR exactly 14,000 lbs. Part of a properly loaded trailer’s total weight is transferred through the tongue or gooseneck to the tow vehicle.
- Payload: the trailer’s GVWR minus its actual empty weight. The most reliable number comes from the completed trailer’s paperwork or a certified scale, not a generic advertisement. Ramps, steel flooring, winches, spare tires, hydraulic jacks, heavier fenders, additional axles, and other options all reduce available cargo capacity.
Every component still has to remain within its individual rating. You cannot use extra tongue weight to compensate for overloaded axles, overloaded tires, an undersized coupler, or an overloaded truck rear axle. Likewise, a trailer can be below its GVWR and still be unsafe if the equipment is positioned too far rearward and leaves inadequate tongue weight.
An H&H 82-inch-wide Super Deluxe Ramp Industrial Equipment Trailer is currently available in 16-ft and 20-ft configurations with 14,000- or 16,000-lb GVWR packages. A Diamond C LPX can also be ordered in either length with the appropriate available GVWR package. Both are legitimate equipment-trailer choices, but they are built and equipped differently. Deck length is primarily about the machine’s complete transport footprint, loading method, securement space, and weight distribution—not just the machine’s published operating weight.
What Actually Fits on a 16-ft Deck
A 16-ft equipment trailer is often a strong match for skid steers, compact track loaders, compact tractors, and smaller mini excavators, but track-contact length by itself is not the correct measurement. A compact track loader may have only five or six feet of track touching the ground while its bucket and rear body make its complete transport length substantially longer.
Measure the machine exactly as it will ride on the trailer. That means the bucket, blade, boom, dipper, thumb, mower, trencher, forks, or other attachment must be placed in its approved transport position before you measure. A 16-ft deck commonly works well for:
- Compact track loaders such as many Bobcat, Kubota, CASE, Cat, Deere, and Takeuchi models when equipped with a standard bucket or another attachment that keeps the complete transport envelope within the deck.
- Skid steers and compact wheel loaders that remain within the trailer’s payload, deck-width, tire, axle, and hitch ratings.
- Smaller mini excavators whose folded boom, blade, counterweight, and attachment can be positioned completely and securely without creating excessive rear projection.
- Compact tractors, riding mowers, stand-on loaders, trenchers, rollers, and similar equipment that leave adequate room for tie-down angles and tongue-weight adjustment.
Mini excavators require especially careful measuring. Machines in the broad 3- to 5-ton category vary substantially in folded transport length, width, operating weight, counterweight design, and attachment position. Some fit comfortably on a 16-ft trailer. Others need 18 or 20 feet even though their tracks appear short enough.
Do not treat four feet of rear overhang as a universal safe allowance. For commercial motor vehicles, a load extending more than four feet beyond the rear generally triggers federal flagging requirements during daylight and additional lighting and reflector requirements when headlamps are required. State rules and noncommercial applications can differ. More importantly, a legally marked projection can still be a poor loading arrangement if it blocks the trailer lights or license plate, leaves no useful rear tie-down angle, or moves the equipment’s center of gravity too far behind the trailer axles.
Moving a machine rearward normally reduces tongue weight rather than increasing it. Too little tongue weight can contribute to trailer sway. On a conventional bumper-pull trailer, the correct target is commonly around 10 to 15 percent of the total loaded trailer weight unless the tow-vehicle, hitch, or trailer manufacturer specifies otherwise. The final position must keep the trailer axles, truck axles, receiver, ball mount, coupler, tires, and complete combination within their ratings.
Where the 20-ft Deck Earns Its Keep
Move into a larger compact track loader, a longer mini or midi excavator, a compact tractor with an implement, or a skid steer that must travel with a separate attachment, and a 16-ft deck gets tight fast. A 20-ft deck gives you four additional feet for positioning the load instead of forcing the heaviest part of the machine into the only spot where it physically fits.
That extra adjustment room is often the biggest advantage. A machine may technically sit on a 16-ft deck but leave only one possible position. On a 20-ft deck, the operator can move it forward or rearward in small increments until the loaded trailer has appropriate tongue weight and the truck’s rear axle remains within its rating. The longer trailer may also provide better chain angles and room to secure a bucket, blade, boom, or detached attachment separately.
Ramp angle is a real safety issue, but deck length alone does not determine the approach angle. Deck height, dovetail length, ramp length, hinge design, breakover point, tire or track profile, and the machine’s ground clearance all matter. Two trailers with the same 20-ft bed can have completely different loading characteristics.
On a current Diamond C LPX, the standard loading arrangement includes spring-assisted 24-inch-by-60-inch HD flip-knee ramps and a 24-inch dovetail with cleats. Eligible 18-ft-and-longer LPX configurations can be ordered with 37-inch-wide MAX Ramps and a 36-inch self-cleaning dovetail. That makes MAX Ramps an available loading upgrade on an eligible 20-ft LPX, but the longer deck does not automatically mean that every 20-ft trailer receives longer ramps.
Low-clearance machines should be checked at two points: where the tracks or tires transition from the ground onto the ramps and where the machine crosses from the ramp or dovetail onto the main deck. A shallow first angle does not help if the machine bottoms out at the breakover point. For equipment that regularly struggles with ramps, a hydraulically dampened tilt trailer such as the Diamond C HDT may be a better solution than simply adding deck length.
A 20-ft deck can also make one-trip combinations practical. Examples include a mini excavator with a plate compactor, a compact track loader with a walk-behind trencher, or a tractor with a detached implement. The total load must still remain within payload, axle, tire, hitch, truck, and securement limits. “It fits on the boards” is not the same as “it can be hauled legally and safely.”
For commercial hauling, heavy vehicles, equipment, and machinery weighing 10,000 lbs or more are generally subject to the federal heavy-equipment securement rules. That includes a minimum of four tie-downs attached as close as practical to the front and rear or to designated securement points, along with proper restraint of accessory equipment. Adequate deck length helps you create those securement angles without placing chains against tires, hydraulic lines, steps, or vulnerable machine components.
Maneuverability: The Trade-off Nobody Talks About Enough
A full-size pickup connected to an equipment trailer is already a long combination. Adding four feet to the trailer increases the space required during turns, backing, parking, and lane changes, although the exact difference depends on tongue length, axle position, truck wheelbase, rear overhang, hitch type, and trailer geometry. A 20-ft bumper pull and a 20-ft gooseneck will not follow the truck in exactly the same way.
Here’s a practical scenario: you’re dropping a mini excavator at a property with a narrow gate and a 90-degree turn off the road. The 16-ft trailer gives you a shorter rear swing and generally requires less space to straighten the combination. The 20-ft trailer may still fit, but it gives you less margin around gate posts, parked vehicles, mailboxes, drainage ditches, trees, and landscaping.
There is no guarantee that the 16-footer will make the turn in one movement or that the 20-footer will require three. Those results depend on the truck, entrance geometry, driver position, traffic, and available pull-up space. The useful takeaway is that four additional feet are noticeable when you repeatedly work in residential driveways, alleys, fenced properties, barns, landscaping sites, or crowded equipment yards.
A longer trailer also has more tail swing behind the axle group. When backing near a building or turning around a fixed object, watch both the trailer tires and the rear corner. The tires can clear an obstacle while the back of the deck or folded ramps swing into it.
If most of your hauls are highway runs to open construction sites, farms, equipment auctions, or large commercial properties, the extra length may be easy to manage. If your daily work involves narrow roads and restricted entrances, the 16-ft trailer can save time on nearly every stop. The better trailer is the shortest one that can carry your current equipment correctly while leaving reasonable room for the jobs you expect to add.
Tow Vehicle and Weight: Where It Gets Real
A 20-ft equipment trailer is not automatically an 18,000-lb gooseneck, and a 16-ft trailer is not automatically suitable for every three-quarter-ton pickup. Diamond C offers the bumper-pull LPX and the gooseneck LPX-GN in multiple lengths and GVWR packages. A 16-ft and a 20-ft trailer can share the same 15,500-lb LPX 207 package, while higher-GVWR configurations use different axle, frame, coupler, tire, and brake equipment.
Do not choose a tow vehicle from the badge on the fender alone. Two Ford F-250s, Ram 2500s, Chevrolet Silverado 2500HDs, or GMC Sierra 2500HDs can have substantially different payload, rear-axle, GCWR, receiver, and maximum trailer ratings depending on cab, bed, engine, drivetrain, axle ratio, options, and model year. The same is true for one-ton pickups.
Before matching either trailer to a truck, verify:
- The truck’s maximum loaded trailer rating for the exact VIN and hitch type.
- The truck’s GCWR, GVWR, front GAWR, and rear GAWR.
- The payload shown on the truck’s door-jamb certification or tire-and-loading label.
- The receiver, ball mount, hitch ball, coupler, safety chains, and weight-distribution-hitch ratings, where applicable.
- The expected loaded tongue or gooseneck weight after passengers, tools, fuel, auxiliary tanks, bed equipment, and other cargo are added to the truck.
- The trailer’s GVWR, unloaded weight, axle ratings, tire ratings, brake system, and actual loaded weight.
Conventional trailer tongue weight is carried by the truck and consumes payload. A 15,000-lb loaded bumper-pull trailer at 12 percent tongue weight would place approximately 1,800 lbs on the hitch before counting the driver, passengers, tools, or cargo in the truck. A truck may have an advertised tow rating above the trailer’s weight and still exceed its payload or rear-axle rating first.
A half-ton pickup should not be assumed capable of handling a heavy equipment trailer simply because one particular configuration advertises a high maximum tow rating. Many 15,500-lb-GVWR equipment-trailer applications require a properly configured heavy-duty pickup, and higher-GVWR or heavily loaded builds may call for a one-ton truck. The final answer depends on the actual trailer weight and the ratings of the exact truck—not a general “half-ton,” “three-quarter-ton,” or “one-ton” label.
Trailer weight also climbs with length, but there is no universal 400- to 600-lb increase. The difference depends on the frame package, axle count, flooring, ramps, dovetail, fenders, winch, jack, spare tire, storage, and other options. As one current H&H example, the 14,000-lb-GVWR 82-by-16 Super Deluxe Ramp Industrial bumper pull is listed at approximately 3,160 lbs curb weight, while its 82-by-20 counterpart is approximately 3,440 lbs. The 16,000-lb versions are heavier because they use a different running-gear package. Always use the weight for the exact unit being considered.
Indiana requires brakes on trailers over 3,000 lbs GVWR, so every equipment trailer discussed here is well above that threshold. The tow vehicle needs a compatible, properly adjusted brake controller, and the trailer’s brakes, breakaway battery, switch, wiring, hubs, and tires should be inspected before loading. Trailer brakes do not increase the truck’s legal tow rating or compensate for an overloaded combination.
Commercial operators also need to consider licensing. A Class A CDL is generally triggered when the combination has a GCWR or qualifying combined weight of 26,001 lbs or more and the towed unit has a GVWR or qualifying weight over 10,000 lbs. The 26,001-lb threshold applies to the combination, not to the trailer alone. Applicability can also depend on commercial use and specific exemptions, so operators should verify their exact situation before putting a new truck-and-trailer combination into service.

The Decision in Plain Terms
If your machine’s complete transport envelope fits on a 16-ft deck, the trailer can be loaded with correct tongue weight, and you still have clear access to properly rated tie-down points, buy the 16-ft trailer. It will generally be lighter, easier to maneuver, easier to store, and capable of working in tighter entrances than a comparable 20-ft build.
If the 16-ft deck forces the machine against the front of the trailer, leaves an attachment hanging beyond the rear, prevents proper chain angles, or gives you no room to adjust tongue weight, move to the 20-ft trailer. The additional deck is also valuable when you regularly carry a second compact machine, a detached attachment, or a longer excavator that remains within the trailer’s payload and dimensional limits.
Do not buy a 20-ft trailer because you assume it automatically has more GVWR. Do not buy a 16-ft trailer because the machine’s tracks measure less than 16 feet. Compare the complete trailer build and the complete loaded combination.
And if you’re not sure, measure your machine before you buy. Bring its operating weight with fuel, operator cab, counterweight, bucket, thumb, blade, forks, mower, trencher, or whatever attachment will travel with it. Bring the total transport length, widest point, overall transport height, and the location of the manufacturer’s approved tie-down points. Also bring the truck’s VIN-specific towing information and door-jamb payload label.
