You’re hauling 9,000 pounds of equipment down the highway and one of your trailer tires fails. Not a puncture from road debris, but a heat-related or structural failure caused by overloading, underinflation, damage, age, or an improperly matched tire-and-wheel assembly. That’s not simply bad luck. It can be the result of a mismatch between the trailer’s certified ratings, its actual loaded weight, and the tires and wheels carrying that weight.
If you’ve ever bought a trailer and not thought twice about the tires, or bought replacement tires based on size alone, this post is for you. Tire size, service type, load range, load index, wheel rating, valve rating, speed rating, and cold inflation pressure all work together. Get one part of that system wrong and you can reduce the trailer’s usable capacity, create excess heat, or increase the risk of a roadside failure.
What “Load Range” Actually Means
Load range is a letter designation molded into a tire’s sidewall. It identifies a tire strength and pressure category, but the letter by itself does not tell you the tire’s exact carrying capacity. Maximum load depends on the complete tire size and service description, whether the tire is used in a single or dual configuration, and the specified cold inflation pressure. Always read the maximum load and pressure molded on the individual tire and consult the tire manufacturer’s load-and-inflation table when one is available.
The familiar “ply rating” language is a strength classification inherited from older bias-ply construction. A modern radial marked “10-ply rating” does not necessarily contain ten physical body plies. Common trailer load ranges include C, D, and E, while heavier commercial-style trailer packages may use F, G, H, or other ratings. Typical pressure categories for many common ST sizes are shown below, but the tire’s own markings and the trailer certification label remain controlling:

Those pressures are common examples, not universal specifications. Tire size matters just as much as load range. For example, many ST235/80R16 Load Range E tires carry a published maximum single-tire load of 3,520 pounds at 80 PSI cold, but you must verify the exact rating printed on the tire because designs and service descriptions can differ. At a lower pressure, that tire cannot automatically be credited with its sidewall maximum load. Inflation pressure is therefore a load-carrying specification, not merely a ride-quality adjustment.
ST Tires vs. Passenger Tires: This Isn’t a Small Difference
ST stands for Special Trailer. ST tires are designed for trailer service and commonly use construction, tread designs, and load-and-inflation characteristics selected for free-rolling trailer axles. Trailer tires must tolerate sustained load, heat, highway speed, curb impacts, and the lateral scrubbing that tandem and triple axles experience during tight turns.
A P-metric passenger tire should not be treated as a direct replacement for an ST tire. Passenger tires have different load calculations and service requirements, and installing one can leave the trailer with inadequate capacity even when the nominal size appears similar. An LT, or Light Truck, tire is not automatically unsafe on every trailer; some heavy trailers are engineered and certified with LT or commercial truck tires as original equipment. However, an owner should not substitute LT for ST, or ST for an original-equipment LT tire, based only on diameter or a claimed load number. Any change in tire type, size, load range, or service description should be approved for the trailer and compatible with its wheels, clearances, GAWR, and required inflation pressure.
Several established manufacturers produce ST tires in a range of sizes and load ratings. For the Diamond C, H&H, and Liberty trailers offered by Spencer Trailers, the correct reference is the tire-and-wheel package installed for that specific trailer’s factory configuration and shown on its certification label. Replacement tires should meet the original specification unless the trailer or tire manufacturer approves an alternative.
Matching Tire Capacity to Your Axle Rating
Here’s the basic rule: the combined load capacity of the tires fitted to an axle must be sufficient for that axle’s Gross Axle Weight Rating, or GAWR. Each tire and wheel must also be capable of carrying its share of the actual load. The trailer must remain within GVWR, every GAWR, every tire rating, every wheel rating, and all other component limits. Meeting one number does not permit another limit to be exceeded.
Take a tandem-axle trailer with two axles rated at 7,000 pounds each. Each axle needs two tires with at least 3,500 pounds of single-tire capacity apiece, assuming equal left-to-right loading. Four ST235/80R16 Load Range E tires marked for 3,520 pounds each at 80 PSI cold would provide 14,080 pounds of nominal single-tire capacity. That satisfies two 7,000-pound GAWRs by only 40 pounds per axle, so correct pressure and balanced loading are essential. The trailer’s certified GVWR may differ from the simple sum of its axle ratings because the complete vehicle rating also reflects frame, coupler, suspension, brake, tire, wheel, and design limits and the load carried at the hitch.
That is not theoretical. Overloading an individual tire, even when the trailer’s total scale weight appears acceptable, increases deflection and heat. Uneven cargo placement, side-to-side imbalance, underinflation, excessive speed, impact damage, and deteriorated tires can compound the stress. Weighing the complete combination and, when possible, checking individual axle and side-to-side loads provides a much better picture than estimating cargo weight.
The Wheel Rating Problem People Miss
The tire gets most of the attention, but the wheel has both a load rating and a pressure rating. The valve stem also has to be appropriate for the operating pressure. A tire-and-wheel assembly is limited by its lowest-rated component.
If a wheel is rated for 2,500 pounds and the mounted tire is rated for 2,830 pounds, the assembly cannot be treated as a 2,830-pound assembly. The same principle applies to pressure: fitting a higher-load-range tire does not authorize inflating beyond the wheel or valve manufacturer’s limit. This problem can arise when owners choose aftermarket wheels for appearance without confirming load, pressure, bolt pattern, pilot dimensions, offset, lug-seat type, and clearance.
Wheel identification may be stamped, cast, engraved, labeled, or documented by the wheel manufacturer. Do not assume that every 16-inch wheel has the same capacity. On a 7,000-pound axle with two single wheels, each wheel must be rated for at least 3,500 pounds, and it must be approved for the pressure required by the selected tire. If the tire’s rating is higher than the wheel’s, the wheel remains the limiting component. High-pressure tire packages also require correctly rated valve stems; ordinary snap-in rubber valves are not appropriate for every high-pressure application.
On current Diamond C LPX Low Profile Equipment Trailer configurations, the axle, tire, wheel, suspension, and braking package changes with the selected GVWR. The LPX is currently offered in bumper-pull configurations from 15,500 through 24,000 pounds GVWR, with tandem 7,000-pound Lippert axles standard and heavier axle packages available. Current factory specifications list 14-ply-rated all-steel radial tires as standard, with a 215/75R17.5 16-ply-rated upgrade available. Replacement wheels and tires must therefore be matched to the actual VIN-specific configuration rather than selected from a generic “LPX” description.
PSI: Running Low Is Worse Than You Think
Trailer tires often require higher cold inflation pressures than passenger-car tires. A tire whose published maximum load is achieved at 80 PSI must be at that specified cold pressure before it can carry that maximum load. Running it at 60 PSI while assigning it the 80-PSI load capacity overloads the tire, even if the scale weight has not changed.
Underinflation makes a tire deflect more as it rolls. Excessive flex produces heat, can damage internal components, and can contribute to tread separation or sudden air loss. Overloading, high ambient temperatures, excessive speed, road hazards, aged rubber, and prolonged storage at low pressure can add further stress. Do not bleed pressure from a hot tire; pressure normally rises while driving, and releasing that air can leave the tire underinflated after it cools.
Check pressure when the tires are cold, ordinarily before travel and before heat has built up through driving or direct sunlight. Follow the trailer’s tire-information or certification label and the tire or trailer manufacturer’s instructions. The sidewall’s maximum pressure is not a universal inflation recommendation for every installation, and owners should not casually reduce pressure for a lighter load unless the trailer or tire manufacturer provides an approved load-and-inflation schedule. Check the spare as well, and make sure the gauge is designed for the pressure range being measured.
A Common Buying Guide Scenario
Say you’re inspecting a tandem-axle equipment trailer with two 7,000-pound GAWRs. Here’s how to sanity-check the tire and wheel setup before you buy or replace worn tires:
- Read the certification label. Confirm the trailer’s VIN, GVWR, front and rear GAWR, original tire size, rim designation, and recommended cold inflation pressure. For a current Diamond C configuration, verify the installed Lippert axle package and do not infer the rating from appearance alone.
- Check each axle and tire position. Two 7,000-pound axles require at least 7,000 pounds of tire capacity on each axle. With two single tires per axle, that generally means at least 3,500 pounds of capacity at each tire position, subject to the certified configuration and actual side-to-side loading.
- Read the complete tire marking. A qualifying ST235/80R16 Load Range E tire may be marked for 3,520 pounds in single service at 80 PSI cold. Verify that exact figure on the installed tire rather than relying on size alone, and confirm its speed rating and service description.
- Verify every wheel and valve. Each wheel must meet the required per-position load and operating pressure. The bolt pattern, diameter, width, offset, center opening, lug-seat design, and valve must also be correct for the hub and tire package.
- Use the specified cold pressure. Inflate according to the trailer label and applicable manufacturer instructions before loading or travel. Never assign a tire its maximum published capacity while operating it below the pressure required for that load.
That’s the whole chain: the trailer certification label and GAWR establish the requirement; the actual load confirms how the trailer is being used; and the tires, wheels, valves, hubs, suspension, and inflation pressure must all support it. The allowable capacity is determined by the lowest applicable rating, not by the strongest part installed.

Two tires may both mount on a nominally similar wheel while having different load capacities, required pressures, overall diameters, widths, and speed ratings. Physical fit alone does not establish that the replacement is safe or legal for the trailer.
When replacing tires, inspect more than tread depth. Look for cracking, bulges, cuts, exposed cords, irregular wear, puncture damage, bent wheels, damaged valve stems, loose or incorrect lug nuts, and evidence of hub or alignment problems. Confirm the Department of Transportation date code and follow the trailer and tire manufacturers’ inspection and replacement guidance. Trailer tires can age out before they wear out, particularly when stored outdoors or left under load for long periods.

Load Range Quick-Reference Q&A
Can I run Load Range E tires on a trailer that came with Load Range D?
Possibly, but a higher load-range letter is not automatic approval. The replacement must be an approved size and type, fit the rim correctly, clear the trailer throughout suspension travel, meet or exceed the required load and speed ratings, and operate within the wheel and valve pressure limits. A higher-rated tire does not increase the trailer’s GVWR or GAWR. Use the trailer manufacturer’s specification or obtain approval before changing the original configuration.
My tire is the right size but it says LT, not ST. Is that okay for my trailer?
Use the tire type specified on the trailer’s certification label unless the trailer manufacturer approves a substitution. LT tires are used as original equipment on some properly engineered heavy-trailer applications, but they are not interchangeable with ST tires merely because the dimensions or advertised capacity look similar. P-metric passenger tires should not be used as a casual replacement for an ST specification.
What PSI should I run if I’m not hauling a full load?
Use the cold inflation pressure on the trailer’s label and follow the tire and trailer manufacturers’ instructions. Do not automatically subtract 5 or 10 PSI for a light trip. A reduced pressure is appropriate only when supported by an applicable manufacturer load-and-inflation table and permitted for that trailer. There is no single pressure rule across all trailer tires: small tires, common 15- and 16-inch ST tires, and 17.5-inch commercial-style tires can have very different pressure requirements.
Do all four tires on a tandem-axle trailer need to be the same load range?
The safest replacement practice is to use matching tires at all positions: the same approved size, construction type, load range or service description, and similar tread design and outside diameter. Tires on the same axle should never create an uneven capacity or significant diameter difference. Brand matching is preferable for consistent construction and handling, although the decisive requirements are manufacturer approval, compatible specifications, adequate capacity, correct pressure, and comparable condition. Replace mismatched or questionable combinations rather than assuming the strongest tire will compensate for the weakest one.
Don’t Shortchange the Foundation
Tires and wheels aren’t the glamorous part of buying a trailer. But they are the trailer’s contact with the road, and a failure at highway speed can damage the trailer, cargo, tow vehicle, and nearby traffic. Proper selection is only the beginning; pressure checks, load control, speed compliance, inspection, rotation where recommended, correct lug-nut torque, and timely replacement all matter.
Get the tire specification right. Match the wheel and valve to the required load and pressure. Follow the certified cold inflation setting, respect the tire’s speed rating, and keep the actual trailer and axle loads within every applicable limit.
