Here’s what quietly ruins otherwise dependable trailer hardware: repeated metal-on-metal movement at dry hinges, pins, bushings, latch points, and coupler surfaces. The damage usually starts as a squeak or a little stiffness, then progresses into galling, corrosion, elongated pin holes, worn bushings, bent latch hardware, and expensive replacement work. A small amount of the correct lubricant, applied at the correct point and interval, can prevent much of that wear.
If you own a cargo trailer, flatbed, equipment hauler, utility trailer, or dump trailer, lubrication is one of the least expensive maintenance tasks you can perform. It is not difficult, but it does need to be done correctly. Different components require different lubricants, not every moving part is designed to be greased, and too much grease can be almost as troublesome as too little. This post covers where to lubricate, what products to use, what to leave dry, and how to build a sensible maintenance schedule around the trailer and components you actually own.
Why Lubrication Matters More Than You Think
Steel pivots, pins, sleeves, latch bolts, and coupler surfaces do not wear evenly. Wear concentrates where loaded surfaces slide, rotate, or strike each other. Without a protective lubricant film, microscopic high points on the metal rub together, creating heat, scoring, metal transfer, and eventually measurable clearance. Water, road salt, fertilizer, mud, and fine aggregate make the problem worse by promoting corrosion or turning old grease into an abrasive paste.
Corrosion and wear do not automatically mean a trailer has suffered structural failure, but they can reduce the effective thickness of pins and brackets, enlarge holes, restrict movement, and transfer forces into adjacent welds or frame members. A stiff ramp can require considerably more force to move than it did when new. A seized latch can tempt an operator to strike it with a hammer. A worn coupler can develop movement that should have been caught during routine inspection. Lubrication helps prevent wear, but it does not replace inspection for cracks, deformation, missing retainers, damaged welds, or excessive play.
It is also important to use ratings correctly. A trailer’s GVWR is the maximum allowable loaded weight of the entire trailer, not the amount of cargo it can carry and not the load rating of each individual hinge. Ramp capacity, axle capacity, tire capacity, coupler rating, and GVWR are separate limits. On a Diamond C LPX equipment trailer, for example, the axle and GVWR package varies by configuration, while the selected ramp system has its own design and operating limits. Lubricating the hinges keeps the ramp moving as designed, but it does not increase the ramp’s published capacity or make an overloaded trailer safe.
The Main Grease Points on a Typical Trailer
Ramp Hinges and Fold-Over Pins
Ramp hinges and folding-ramp pivots are among the most commonly neglected service points on equipment and utility trailers. They carry the weight of the ramp during movement and may also receive substantial impact and rolling forces during loading. Depending on the trailer, the ramp may use a simple hinge barrel, removable pins, bushings, a two-part folding hinge, spring-assisted pivots, or a combination of those components.
Current Diamond C loading systems include MAX Ramps, XDR Ramps, and the X-Ramp option on applicable models. Their geometry and hinge arrangements are not identical, so the correct grease points must be identified from the trailer and component information rather than assumed from appearance. Some pivots have grease fittings, while others use bushings or protected hinge components that are serviced differently. Never drill a hinge barrel, install a fitting, or modify a ramp assembly unless the trailer manufacturer has approved the procedure.
Where a hinge has a Zerk fitting, clean the fitting before attaching the grease gun. Dirt left on the Zerk can be pushed directly into the joint. Use the lubricant specified by the manufacturer, pump slowly, and stop when the joint has accepted the required amount. On a purgeable hinge, a small amount of clean grease may appear at the edge of the joint. On a sealed or close-tolerance assembly, continued pumping can damage a seal or force grease into an unwanted area. If a fitting will not accept grease, do not keep increasing gun pressure. The fitting may be blocked, damaged, painted over, or connected to a seized passage.
After lubrication, cycle the ramp carefully several times to distribute the lubricant. Keep hands and feet away from pinch points, support heavy ramps as required, and never work beneath an unsecured ramp. Wipe off excess grease so it does not collect grit or transfer onto the deck, ramp traction surface, tires, brakes, or Diamond C’s DM Difference Maker coating. If the ramp remains stiff after proper lubrication, inspect for bent components, worn bushings, misalignment, damaged springs, cracked welds, or a partially seized pin instead of assuming that more grease will solve the problem.
Gate Latches (Side Gates and Rear Gates)
Enclosed cargo trailers and open utility trailers both use latches, but the correct lubrication method depends on the mechanism and its exposure to dirt. Rear-door cam bars, side-door latches, hinge pins, lock cylinders, drop pins, and removable-gate receivers should not all be coated with the same product.
On an enclosed cargo trailer, a light film lubricant is normally preferable on external cam-bar pivots, rod guides, hinge knuckles, and latch pivots. A dry PTFE product, light machine oil, or another manufacturer-approved spray can reduce friction without leaving a thick layer that captures dust. Apply it precisely and wipe away runoff. Do not spray the ramp deck, door seals, brake components, electrical connectors, or painted wall panels.
Lock cylinders deserve separate treatment. Heavy chassis grease and ordinary white lithium grease can hold dirt inside the keyway and may interfere with small tumblers. Use a lubricant specifically labeled for lock cylinders, commonly a dry PTFE, graphite, or other residue-controlled lock product approved by the lock maker. Avoid forcing oil into a cylinder that is already contaminated; a sticking or damaged lock may need cleaning or replacement.
Open utility-trailer gate pins and latch receivers are exposed to rain, dust, grass clippings, soil, and road spray. A shielded, heavily loaded pin may benefit from a light coating of NLGI #2 grease, while a fully exposed latch that constantly collects dirt may operate better with a dry-film lubricant. Clean old grease and embedded debris before applying fresh product. Coat the bearing surfaces rather than packing the entire receiver tube. Confirm that every retaining clip, spring, locking tab, or secondary catch is present and fully engaged before towing.
Gooseneck Coupler Ball Socket and Fifth-Wheel Kingpin
A gooseneck ball coupler and a fifth-wheel kingpin are two different hitch systems, even though both place the connection in or above the truck bed. Diamond C FMAX and other Diamond C gooseneck trailers use a ball-type gooseneck coupler appropriate to the selected trailer package. A fifth-wheel trailer uses a kingpin that locks into the jaws of a fifth-wheel hitch. Each system has different lubrication points and must be serviced according to the installed component manual.
For a conventional gooseneck connection, inspect the truck-side ball, coupler socket, latch, locking pins, adjustment hardware, and any designated grease fittings. Unless the coupler manufacturer says otherwise, apply a thin, even film of the specified high-pressure grease to the ball and the socket’s loaded contact surface. The goal is to prevent dry sliding contact, not to pack the socket full. Excess grease attracts contamination and can spread across the truck bed. Verify that the trailer wiring has a sound dedicated ground connection rather than relying on the hitch ball as the only electrical ground.
Some specialized truck-side gooseneck ball assemblies have their own Zerk fitting and a component-specific lubricant requirement. One design may call for molybdenum grease at a stated mileage interval, while another may require a different product or service method. That requirement applies to the identified hitch component, not automatically to every gooseneck coupler. Check the hitch model, label, and manual before choosing grease.
For a fifth-wheel setup, lubricate the hitch plate, locking jaws, pivot points, and kingpin only as directed by the hitch manufacturer. Some systems use fifth-wheel grease on the top plate, while others permit a compatible polymer lube plate in place of grease on that surface. A lube plate does not automatically eliminate lubrication of the locking jaws, pivots, or other designated points. Keep grease away from friction surfaces or fasteners that the manufacturer specifies must remain clean and dry.
During every hitch inspection, look for scoring, cracks, deformation, a loose or incomplete latch, missing retainers, unusual movement, and wear beyond the component maker’s limit. Lubrication cannot restore an undersized ball, worn socket, damaged latch, bent kingpin, or compromised hitch. Stop towing and have the assembly inspected when engagement is uncertain or abnormal play is found.
Tongue Jack Screw and Safety Chain Hooks
Trailer jacks are built in several different ways. Some manual jacks have accessible gearing, screw stems, bushings, and grease fittings. Others use sealed gearboxes, covered screws, hydraulic systems, or manufacturer-lubricated assemblies that should not be opened during routine owner maintenance. Do not assume the screw is exposed or that every jack should be packed with grease.
For a serviceable side-wind jack, the manufacturer may call for automotive grease at the designated lubrication fitting and light oil on the input-shaft bushings. A top-wind jack may instead call for light oil on the screw stem. Heavy square drop-leg jacks often have grease points near the gearbox or input shaft. Apply only a small amount, rotate the handle to distribute it, and keep the drop leg clean. Never crawl beneath a trailer supported only by its tongue jack, and do not fully extend a jack beyond its marked or mechanical limit.
Safety chains and hooks require inspection more than blanket greasing. Check for stretched links, deep corrosion, cracked welds, bent hooks, damaged latches, worn clevis pins, and missing retainers. If a spring-loaded hook latch or removable pin is stiff, a small amount of light oil may be applied to its pivot when permitted by the hardware manufacturer. Keep the hook throat and load-bearing chain surfaces clean enough to inspect. Do not hide corrosion or damage beneath a heavy coating of grease.
Use anti-seize only where the component manufacturer specifically allows it. Anti-seize changes thread friction and can alter the clamp load produced by a given torque value. It should not be placed on coupler bolts, wheel studs, safety-chain fasteners, suspension hardware, or other torque-critical connections unless the published procedure calls for lubricated threads and provides the appropriate torque specification.

Grease and oil are not interchangeable, but product names alone do not determine suitability. A grease sold for wheel bearings may or may not meet the specification for a hinge, coupler, or jack. Likewise, a product labeled as “hitch grease” is not automatically correct for every grease fitting. Match the lubricant’s base oil, thickener, NLGI grade, extreme-pressure properties, and solid additives to the component maker’s requirement.
Grease compatibility matters too. Mixing products with incompatible thickeners can cause the mixture to soften, harden, separate, or lose its ability to remain in the joint. When the existing grease is unknown, identify the original product or clean out the old material before changing types. Do not add molybdenum, graphite, anti-seize, silicone, penetrating oil, or a dry-film product simply because it is available in the shop. Each has useful applications, but each also has locations where it does not belong.
Use grease on high-load sliding or rotating surfaces when the component is designed for it. Use a controlled amount of oil or dry lubricant on lighter mechanisms where thick grease would capture debris. Keep all lubricants away from brake linings, drums, rotors, pads, tire tread, ramp traction surfaces, wood decking, electrical contacts unless specifically approved, and any part that relies on friction to remain secure.
Service Intervals That Actually Make Sense
There is no universal interval for every hinge, latch, coupler, and jack. The trailer manufacturer’s schedule establishes the general baseline, while the manuals for the installed coupler, jack, ramp, hitch, axle, and hydraulic components may require shorter or more specific intervals. Mileage, operating hours, load cycles, weather exposure, pressure washing, road salt, fertilizer, and storage conditions all affect how often service is needed.
For current Diamond C trailers, the published maintenance schedule calls for pre-trip inspection of the hitching equipment and lubrication of grease points as needed, lubrication of all grease points at the six-month or 6,000-mile service, and a broader inspection at 12 months or 12,000 miles. A particular hitch or jack may require service sooner, so use the shortest applicable interval. A practical schedule is:
- Before every trip or work shift: Inspect ramps, gates, latches, coupler or kingpin, jack, safety chains, retaining pins, and visible grease fittings. Lubricate a designated point when it is dry, contaminated, noisy, or due under its component manual. Confirm that every latch and retainer fully engages.
- Every 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first: Clean and lubricate all manufacturer-designated grease points, inspect suspension components, check hinge and pin wear, examine safety chains and hooks, and inspect the coupler, jack, wiring, and wheel ends. Commercial or severe-duty use may require substantially shorter intervals.
- Every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first: Perform a complete trailer and hitch inspection, including brake systems, wheel bearings or oil-bath levels as applicable, hydraulic components, coupler hardware, ramps, gates, structural pivots, welds, flooring, and all component-specific maintenance. Brake disassembly and internal lubrication should be handled according to the axle and brake manual by a qualified technician.
- After washing, flooding, submersion, road-salt exposure, or heavy contamination: Inspect exposed joints and fittings, dry the hardware, and relubricate designated points as needed. Avoid directing a pressure-washer nozzle at seals, bearings, electrical connectors, hydraulic components, or grease-fitting openings because high-pressure water can force contamination into protected areas.
Some components have a published three-month or 3,000-mile requirement, while others are serviced annually. That is why applying a single 90-day rule to the entire trailer is not accurate. Record the model of each major component and keep its instructions with the trailer. A grease fitting on a truck-side hitch may have a different schedule from the trailer’s ramp hinges, suspension wet bolts, jack gearbox, or wheel bearings.
Heavy-use equipment haulers, landscape trailers, rental units, dump trailers, and trailers operating around aggregate, mud, salt, manure, or fertilizer should be inspected more frequently than lightly used recreational trailers. Instead of waiting a fixed number of days, inspect high-cycle pivots weekly or at the start of each work shift. Shorten the service interval whenever grease is displaced, water enters the joint, movement becomes rough, or the trailer accumulates loading cycles faster than mileage.
Electric drum brakes are not externally greased as part of hinge maintenance. During brake service, only the specific adjuster threads and shoe contact points identified by the brake manufacturer receive a very small amount of high-temperature brake lubricant. Grease must never contact the linings, magnet face, drum friction surface, or electrical wiring. Do not spray lubricant through the backing plate in an attempt to quiet a brake.
A Quick Diagnostic Check
You do not need specialized diagnostic equipment to spot many developing problems, but the trailer must be parked on firm, level ground, secured against movement, and handled with respect for pinch points and stored energy. Before or after every trip, spend 60 seconds on the following checks:
- Open and close the rear gate or ramp while keeping clear of its travel path. Does it move evenly, or does one side bind, jump, scrape, squeak, or require noticeably more force? Verify that spring-assisted components remain controlled and that every hinge retainer is present.
- With the trailer uncoupled, wheels chocked, and coupler safely supported, inspect the ball socket, latch, and visible contact surfaces. Look for dry scoring, rust scale, deformation, cracks, missing hardware, or wear. Do not judge allowable coupler clearance by feel alone; use the component maker’s wear limits or have a dealer inspect suspected play.
- Move each gate latch, cam bar, drop pin, and removable-gate retainer through its full operating range. It should engage positively without hammering, prying, or forcing. Clean dirt from receivers before adding lubricant.
- Cycle the tongue jack through a controlled portion of its travel. Listen for grinding, clicking, or changes in effort. Confirm that the drop-leg pin seats completely and that the jack does not wobble at its mount. Do not test it at full extension or work beneath the trailer while it is supported only by the jack.
Binding, squealing, or visible dry contact means the component needs attention, but lubrication should not be used to conceal damage. A bent hinge, cracked weld, elongated hole, loose mount, failing bushing, damaged spring, or worn latch may briefly feel better after oiling while remaining unsafe. If movement is uneven, hardware is distorted, or a latch will not engage positively, stop using the component until the cause is identified.
Also watch the old lubricant as it exits a serviceable joint. Rust-colored grease can indicate water intrusion or corrosion. Metallic particles can indicate active wear. Milky grease may contain water. A fitting that repeatedly pushes out, refuses grease, or leaks around its base needs repair rather than additional pressure from the gun.
Trailers With Lots of Moving Parts
Some trailers have considerably more service points than others. A current Diamond C LPT heavy-duty dump trailer uses a front-mounted multi-stage telescopic hoist and is offered in several GVWR and Lippert axle configurations. The Diamond C MDT is also a telescopic dump model. Depending on configuration, a dump trailer may have body-hinge pivots, tailgate hinges, latch bars, gate hold-back hardware, ramp retainers, jack grease points, suspension grease points, and other designated fittings in addition to the normal coupler and gate hardware.
Only lubricate the dump-trailer points identified by the manufacturer. Do not smear grease on a hydraulic cylinder rod. The exposed rod should be kept clean so dirt is not carried past the rod seal. Do not loosen hydraulic fittings, enter the space beneath a raised body, or rely on hydraulic pressure alone to hold the bed up. Before inspecting bed pivots or hoist hardware, use the factory body-prop or approved mechanical support exactly as directed in the trailer manual.
Dump gates and latches should move freely, but they must also remain capable of locking securely under load. Remove compacted material from hinge pockets, receivers, and gate edges before lubrication. Greasing over gravel, asphalt, soil, or demolition debris creates an abrasive mixture and can prevent the latch from seating. Inspect the gate, hold-back system, pins, retainers, and welds whenever the trailer has carried material that could wedge into the mechanism.
An enclosed cargo trailer with a rear ramp door may have multiple hinges plus cables, drums, and torsion springs that offset part of the door’s weight. Those spring systems store substantial energy and are not routine do-it-yourself adjustment points. Lubricate only the hinges and manufacturer-designated pivots. Do not spray the spring coils, cables, drums, brake mechanisms, or ramp surface unless the door manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so. A frayed cable, damaged drum, broken spring, uneven door, or suddenly heavy ramp should be serviced by a qualified technician.
If you are not sure where the Zerk fittings are on your specific trailer, the owner’s manual and component manuals are the first stop. Not every brand places fittings in the same locations, and two trailers with the same model name can have different components because of GVWR packages, options, or production changes. Use the trailer VIN and the identification label on the coupler, jack, axle, hitch, hydraulic unit, or door hardware when looking up instructions.
Never assume that a round boss, small plug, spring hole, or recessed fastener is a grease fitting. A proper Zerk has a shaped head that accepts the grease-gun coupler. If a fitting is recessed or angled, use the approved coupler or adapter rather than forcing a needle into a seal or opening. Replace damaged fittings with the correct thread, style, and pressure rating, and determine why the original fitting failed before adding grease.
