What’s That Black Streak on My Trailer Tires?

You pull your trailer out of the driveway, glance back, and notice a dark black streak across the outer shoulder of one or more tires. It can look like rubber has burned, dragged, or rubbed against something. If the mark appeared immediately after a tight, low-speed turn and is limited to the tread shoulder, it may be ordinary tandem-axle tire scrub. But a streak on the actual sidewall, a deep abrasion, a shiny rub band, exposed cords, or fast-growing edge wear is not something to dismiss as normal. The location, depth, and pattern of the mark matter more than the color alone.

So let’s sort this out properly and separate expected low-speed scuffing from the wear patterns that point to inflation, loading, suspension, bearing, brake, or axle-alignment problems.

Why Tandem Axles Scrub Tires

A single-axle trailer can pivot through a turn with the axle positioned near the trailer’s effective turning point. The wheels on the inside and outside of the turn travel different distances, but they can rotate independently at the speeds needed to follow their respective paths. With a fixed tandem-axle configuration, both axle tubes remain parallel and both sets of wheels point straight ahead relative to the trailer frame. During a turn, however, the front and rear axles are following arcs with different centers and radii. Both axles cannot be perfectly aligned with the instantaneous direction of travel at the same time.

The tires accommodate that mismatch by flexing at the contact patch and slipping slightly sideways across the pavement. In a tight maneuver, the tires ahead of and behind the effective pivot point may scuff in different lateral directions. That action can leave black rubber marks on the pavement and a darkened or roughed-up appearance at the tread shoulders. You may also hear a low squeal, chirp, or groan and see the sidewalls visibly twist while backing sharply on dry concrete or asphalt. The effect is usually most noticeable when the trailer is heavily loaded, the turn is very tight, and the pavement provides plenty of grip.

This low-speed scuffing is a normal result of fixed tandem-axle geometry, but it should not be used to explain every black mark or every uneven tire. Normal scrub is concentrated around tight turns and affects the tread surface. It should not create a deep groove in the sidewall, produce severe one-corner wear, or continue grinding away one tire during straight highway travel. The real question is not whether some scrub exists, but whether the amount and pattern are consistent with ordinary maneuvering.

What “Normal” Looks Like

Normal tandem scrub usually appears as light abrasion, a rubbed-looking tread shoulder, small rubber crumbs, or temporary black marks on the pavement after a sharp turn. The outermost tread blocks may look slightly rounded or wiped compared with the center ribs. The pattern should be broadly similar from side to side, and it should develop gradually rather than destroying one tire in a few trips. A true flat spot is different: a localized flat patch is more commonly associated with a skidding or locked wheel, brake trouble, or prolonged storage than with ordinary tandem turning geometry.

Axle spacing influences how much lateral movement is required. Center-to-center spacing varies by trailer design and suspension package, but, all else being equal, a wider tandem spread generally creates more scrub in a tight turn because each axle sits farther from the axle group’s effective pivot point. A close-coupled tandem generally scrubs less. Axle spacing also affects suspension design, frame loads, maneuverability, and weight distribution, so it is engineered by the trailer manufacturer and is not something to alter simply to change tire wear.

If you’re pulling a current 7,000 lb GVWR Diamond C GTU premium tandem-axle utility trailer, which uses two 3,500 lb Lippert brake axles, or a comparable H&H tandem utility or equipment trailer, a light scuff after backing tightly into a driveway can be normal. The same principle applies to 14,000 lb equipment trailers and heavier tandem-axle builds. What is not normal is rapid tread loss, a repeated sidewall contact mark, one tire running much hotter than the others, or one axle developing a clearly different wear pattern during ordinary straight-line use.

The Four Causes Worth Knowing

1. Tandem-Axle Turning Geometry (Expected)

This is the baseline cause of the temporary scuffing seen on most fixed, non-steering tandem-axle trailers. During a tight turn, the tires cannot all roll in the exact direction their wheel planes are pointing, so the tread flexes and slips laterally. A wider turn reduces the required slip angle and generally reduces scrub. Specialized commercial trailers may use steerable axles, lift axles, or other systems that reduce low-speed scuffing, but conventional utility, car-hauler, dump, cargo, and equipment trailers normally rely on fixed axles. Some tread disturbance during sharp maneuvering is therefore expected, but sidewall damage and aggressive one-sided wear are not.

2. Axle Misalignment

Here’s where ordinary turning scrub can cross into a real maintenance problem. If an axle is out of square with the trailer centerline, has an incorrect toe condition, or has shifted in the suspension, its tires may operate at a continuous slip angle even while the trailer is traveling straight. Instead of scuffing only during a parking maneuver, the affected tires are being dragged slightly sideways mile after mile.

Warning signs include one tire or one axle wearing much faster than the others, directional feathering across the tread, persistent inside- or outside-edge wear, visible dog-tracking, or a trailer that no longer follows predictably behind the tow vehicle. A perceived pull can also come from unequal tire pressure, an off-center load, road crown, tow-vehicle alignment, or brake drag, so it is not proof of axle misalignment by itself. Possible trailer causes include loose axle U-bolts, worn spring-eye or equalizer bushings, damaged shackles or hangers, a broken or sagging spring, incorrect axle installation, a bent spindle or axle tube, frame damage, or a hard curb or pothole impact.

On a 7,000 lb GVWR trailer such as the Diamond C GTU, even a small toe or tracking error can shorten tire life because the tires are continuously working against one another. On heavier equipment trailers, the heat and structural loads can be greater. Keep in mind that many beam-style trailer axles are manufactured with an intentional upward camber when unloaded, so an upward bow in the axle tube is not automatically evidence of damage. Correct diagnosis requires measurements taken on level ground using the axle manufacturer’s procedures, not a visual guess from across the parking lot.

3. Overloading

Overloading does not create tandem turning geometry, but it amplifies tire deflection, heat buildup, shoulder stress, suspension movement, and scrub. Tire capacity depends on the exact tire size, load range, application, speed rating, and cold inflation pressure. A load-range designation is a strength and load-capacity category; it should not be treated as a literal count of physical tire plies. Never assume that an ST205/75R15 tire has enough capacity for a trailer simply because another tire of the same nominal size does.

The trailer’s GVWR is the maximum permitted loaded trailer weight, not its cargo capacity. Payload is the GVWR minus the trailer’s actual empty weight, including installed ramps, spare tires, toolboxes, winches, batteries, hydraulic equipment, and other options. The axle ratings, tire and wheel ratings, coupler or gooseneck rating, safety-chain rating, frame rating, and tow-vehicle limits also remain separate constraints. A trailer can be under its total GVWR and still overload one tire, one axle, the hitch, or the tow vehicle because of poor placement.

If you’re loading a Liberty 83-inch by 20-foot, 7,000 lb GVWR car hauler with a compact machine, positioning the machine too far rearward can reduce tongue weight and increase the risk of sway. Placing it too far forward can overload the hitch, tow-vehicle rear axle, or rear tires. Uneven left-to-right placement can overload a single trailer tire even when the total scale weight appears acceptable. Tandem equalizers help share load between axles, but they cannot correct an overloaded trailer or badly positioned cargo. The reliable approach is to secure the load in a stable position and verify the complete combination, individual axle groups, and tongue or pin weight on suitable scales.

4. Tire Feathering

Feathering is a directional wear pattern in which the edges of the tread ribs or blocks become rounded on one side and sharper on the other. Run your hand lightly across the tread in both directions after the tire has cooled. If the tread feels relatively smooth in one direction and noticeably rough or sawtoothed in the other, the tire is feathered. Use care around exposed belts, cuts, or damaged tread, and do not continue handling a tire that appears structurally compromised.

True feathering usually points to a sustained toe or tracking problem rather than ordinary occasional turning scrub. Low-speed tandem scuff can roughen the shoulders, but it should not create a strong, consistent sawtooth pattern across the tire. Toe error may come from axle damage, incorrect installation, suspension movement, loose mounting hardware, or worn components that allow an axle to shift under braking and load.

A feathered tire may still hold air, but the pattern should not be ignored until it becomes visibly severe. The underlying condition can continue generating heat and removing rubber, and correcting the axle after the pattern is established may not make the tire wear evenly again. A trailer used frequently at highway speeds or under heavy loads can turn a small alignment problem into a ruined set of tires surprisingly quickly. Inspect the suspension and alignment promptly, then have the tire itself evaluated for continued service.

When to Be Concerned

The black color itself is not the deciding factor. Look at where the mark is, whether rubber is merely transferred on the surface, how quickly the tread is disappearing, and whether the pattern is symmetric. Light tread scuffing that follows a tight turn is one thing. A repeated polished band at the same height on the sidewall may mean the tire is contacting a fender, frame member, ramp bracket, suspension component, or neighboring tire. Cuts, bulges, exposed cords, tread separation, deep cracking, or any loss of air require immediate attention.

Inspect the trailer tires every time you hook up and check inflation with an accurate gauge while the tires are cold. Use the cold pressure specified by the trailer manufacturer, certification label, owner’s manual, or applicable tire load-and-inflation information. The maximum pressure molded into a tire’s sidewall is not automatically the correct pressure for every trailer application, and pressure should never exceed the limits of the tire, wheel, valve stem, or trailer specification. Do not bleed pressure from a properly inflated tire simply because its pressure rises after driving; that temperature-related increase is expected. Check the spare tire too, along with dual inner tires where applicable.

If you’re running a Delco equipment trailer or a Diamond C LPX low-profile extreme-duty equipment trailer under regular heavy loads, inspect more than tread depth. Read the date code, look for weather cracking, compare pressure and tread depth at every wheel position, and investigate any tire or hub that runs noticeably hotter than its companions. The manufacturing date is shown by the last four digits of the DOT Tire Identification Number, normally in week-and-year format. For example, 2319 means the tire was manufactured during the twenty-third week of 2019. The complete DOT number may be molded on only one side of the tire.

Tire age recommendations vary by tire and vehicle manufacturer. Federal safety guidance notes that some manufacturers call for replacement in the six- to ten-year range regardless of remaining tread, while severe service, heat exposure, underinflation, overloading, impact damage, or prolonged outdoor storage can shorten usable life. A tire manufactured in 2019 is six to seven years old in 2026 and may already be at or beyond a manufacturer’s time-based recommendation, so it deserves close professional evaluation. Also distinguish inner tread wear from inner sidewall rubbing. Inner tread-edge wear can indicate camber, toe, overloading, or axle damage. An actual scuff or gouge on the inward-facing sidewall suggests physical contact, insufficient clearance, incorrect tire or wheel fitment, bearing looseness, suspension movement, or overload. Stop and inspect before the sidewall is weakened.

What You Can Do About It

You cannot eliminate all low-speed scrub from a conventional fixed tandem-axle trailer, but you can keep ordinary scuffing from being confused with preventable tire damage. A few practical steps:

  • Maintain the specified cold inflation pressure. Check it before travel with a reliable gauge and inspect valve stems, caps, and the spare. Underinflation increases sidewall flex and heat, while an incorrect pressure for the actual application can produce uneven wear. Never choose pressure by appearance alone.
  • Inspect and lubricate the hitch ball, coupler, gooseneck connection, or other pivot points as directed by their manufacturers. Proper lubrication reduces wear and allows smooth articulation, but it is maintenance rather than a cure for tire scrub. Replace any damaged, seized, loose, or incorrectly adjusted hitch component.
  • Avoid unnecessarily tight, jackknifed turns, especially with a heavily loaded trailer on dry concrete. Pull forward and reset when practical instead of forcing the tandem axle group to pivot in place. A wider sweeping path substantially reduces tire distortion and lateral scuffing.
  • Load for safe balance, adequate tongue or pin weight, and compliance with every component rating. Do not move cargo rearward merely to reduce pressure on an axle or alternate placement just to even out tire wear. Secure the load, confirm left-to-right balance, and use scales when the load is close to any limit.
  • Inspect the complete suspension and wheel-end system. Look for broken or sagging springs, worn equalizers and bushings, elongated shackle holes, cracked hangers, loose U-bolts, shifted axles, leaking seals, bearing play, damaged wheels, and dragging brakes. On trailers with a different suspension design, follow the applicable manufacturer’s inspection procedure.

A black streak is not automatically a reason to panic, but it is a reason to stop and identify exactly what has been rubbing. Tires, wheels, bearings, brakes, and suspension components are what keep the trailer controlled and separated from the pavement. A failure at highway speed can damage the trailer, cargo, tow vehicle, and surrounding traffic. Take the five minutes. Check every tire, compare the patterns, confirm cold pressure, and investigate anything that is getting worse.
