- Two rear tail lamps on modern trailers
- Stop lamps that illuminate when the tow-vehicle brakes are applied
- Left and right turn signals
- A white lamp illuminating the rear license plate
- Rear red reflectors
- Amber front-side and red rear-side marker lamps and reflectors where required
- Clearance and identification lamps on trailers 80 inches or more in overall width
- Intermediate side marker lamps and reflectors on trailers that meet the federal 30-foot overall-length trigger

LEDs generally draw less current and last longer than incandescent bulbs, but an LED assembly can still fail because of water intrusion, poor grounding, damaged wiring, or a defective sealed lamp.
If you convert an older trailer to LEDs, use DOT-compliant lamp assemblies in the required colors and locations. Replacing a lamp with something brighter does not make it compliant if it has the wrong lens color, lacks the proper certification marking, or is mounted where it cannot meet visibility requirements. Preserve all required reflectors and conspicuity material during body repairs, paint work, ramp replacement, and rear-door modifications.
Safety Chains: Required, and Rigged Correctly
Indiana requires ordinary trailers and semitrailers hauled by a motor vehicle to be secured by suitable coupling devices and safety chains or other qualifying devices. IC 9-20-9-8 calls for one safety chain or device on each side of the coupling, positioned at the extreme outer edges, with every chain, device, connection, and attachment strong enough to haul the trailer when it is loaded. For a bumper-pull trailer, crossing the safety chains under the tongue is a widely recommended rigging method because it can create a cradle beneath the coupler if the primary hitch connection fails. Attach both chains to rated safety-chain anchors in the truck bed and follow the gooseneck hitch and trailer manufacturer’s instructions. Do not attach the chains to cargo tie-downs, unverified bed hardware, or an unreinforced part of the pickup box. The hitch ball, hitch structure, chain anchors, and installation hardware must all be rated for the trailer and load.
Chain capacity cannot be judged by link diameter alone. Look for the chain assembly’s grade, rating, hook style, attachment method, and manufacturer’s working-load information. Indiana law requires sufficient strength to haul the loaded trailer, so do not assume that the ratings of two undersized chains can simply be added together to make an inadequate system acceptable.
If you’re towing a H&H 18-foot equipment trailer certified at 14,000 pounds GVWR, use the chain assemblies and tow-vehicle attachment points specified for that rating. Light utility-trailer chains, open S-hooks without retainers, worn snap hooks, hardware-store eye bolts, and unrated quick links are not appropriate substitutes for a heavy equipment trailer.
Inspect the coupler and chains together. Make sure the coupler matches the ball size, the latch closes completely, the coupler is not spread or cracked, and the ball mount, receiver, pin, and clip are properly rated. After coupling, raise the tongue jack enough to place some weight on the hitch as a basic latch check before fully retracting the jack. Speed Limits When Towing
Indiana does not impose a general statewide 55 mph limit solely because a passenger vehicle is towing a trailer. In most ordinary pickup-and-trailer situations, the posted speed limit applies. Vehicle classification still matters, however. On rural interstate highways, Indiana’s driver’s manual states that passenger vehicles may travel up to 70 mph or the posted limit, while trucks with a declared gross vehicle weight greater than 26,000 pounds may not exceed 65 mph or the posted limit. A legal speed is not automatically a safe speed for every combination. Width Limits: How Wide Can Your Trailer Be?
Indiana’s standard maximum vehicle width without an oversize permit is 8 feet 6 inches, or 102 inches. Most deck-over equipment trailers and full-width enclosed trailers are designed around that 102-inch highway limit.
A listed trailer width can be confusing. A low-profile equipment trailer may have an 82-inch bed between the fenders while its overall fender-to-fender width approaches 102 inches. A deck-over trailer may have a full 102-inch bed. Either can carry a load that extends beyond the trailer structure, but once the overall vehicle-and-load width exceeds 8 feet 6 inches, oversize permitting requirements may apply.
Indiana oversize and overweight permits are administered through the Indiana Department of Revenue’s Motor Carrier Services division, not through a standard BMV registration transaction. Trailer Registration and Weight Ratings
Indiana residents generally must title and register newly acquired trailers used on public roads. The application for an Indiana certificate of title must be submitted within 45 days after purchase or acquisition to avoid the administrative late-title penalty. A newly acquired, previously unregistered vehicle must also be registered within 45 days. Farm classifications require care. Depending on the package, it may be certified around 14,900 or 15,500 pounds, 18,000 pounds, 20,000 pounds, or another available heavy-duty rating. Do not choose a trailer only by advertised GVWR. Calculate the weight of the machine, attachments, fuel, tools, pallets, tie-down equipment, spare tire, tarp system, ramps, battery, and every factory or dealer option. Then allow a realistic capacity margin. CDL rules are also based on the combination, not merely the number printed on the trailer. Cargo securement is a separate obligation from trailer capacity. Use tie-downs with working-load limits appropriate for the cargo, attach them to rated points, protect straps from sharp edges, and secure attachments or loose material independently. Do not rely on hydraulic pressure, a parking brake, a bucket resting on the deck, or the trailer’s sidewalls as the only means of restraint.
After loading, check tongue or pin weight and axle distribution. Too little tongue weight can contribute to sway, while too much can overload the tow vehicle’s receiver, rear axle, tires, suspension, or payload rating.
