Hauling Two Motorcycles Safely — The Right Way to Load Pairs

Two bikes, one trailer, and one chance to secure the load correctly. Hauling a single motorcycle already demands attention to detail. Add a second one beside it and the margin for error becomes smaller. Handlebars, mirrors, fairings, and luggage can contact each other; the load changes the trailer’s balance; and poorly positioned chocks or anchors can let both machines move before you reach the highway.

This guide covers the practical mechanics: measuring usable trailer space, positioning wheel chocks, maintaining clearance, selecting motorcycle-safe attachment points, tensioning straps without unnecessarily loading the suspension, and understanding why an enclosed trailer can make regular two-bike transport cleaner and more convenient.

Start With the Right Trailer Width

The first mistake many people make is choosing a trailer based only on its advertised exterior width. Motorcycle width varies considerably by model and equipment. A sportbike may be relatively narrow, while a touring motorcycle, cruiser with wide handlebars, or adventure bike with panniers can occupy substantially more space. Mirrors, hand guards, highway pegs, exhaust components, and removable luggage must all be included when measuring.

A nominal 6-foot-wide cargo trailer may work for some compact motorcycle combinations, but it can be uncomfortably tight once wall thickness, interior trim, wheel boxes, door hardware, and the space needed to operate tie-downs are considered. A nominal 7-foot-wide trailer generally provides a more practical working area for two conventional motorcycles. An 8.5-foot-wide model offers additional flexibility for touring bikes, adventure motorcycles with side cases, or combinations with especially wide handlebars. Check the trailer’s actual interior wall-to-wall width and width between wheel boxes rather than relying on the nominal exterior size.

Because dimensions, axle packages, door openings, interior heights, and GVWR ratings can vary by model and option package, verify the specifications of the individual trailer before deciding that it fits your motorcycles.

Length still matters even when the motorcycles are positioned generally side by side. Most full-size motorcycles are approximately 7 to 9 feet long, but extra floor length provides room to stagger the chocks, walk around the machines, reach rear attachment points, store riding gear, and close the ramp door without contacting a tire or exhaust. A 14-foot cargo area is a useful starting point for many two-bike combinations, although compact motorcycles may fit in less space and long touring machines may benefit from a longer trailer.

Before buying, make a simple floor plan using the actual overall length and widest point of each motorcycle. Add working clearance around the handlebars and tie-down paths, then compare that layout with the trailer’s usable interior dimensions and rear-door opening. This is more reliable than assuming that any two motorcycles will fit a particular nominal trailer size.

Wheel Chocks: One Per Bike, No Exceptions

A wheel chock helps locate the motorcycle, limits forward movement, and stabilizes the front wheel while the tie-down system is being attached. A chock does not replace straps, and the straps do not replace a properly installed chock. Loose lumber, blocks, or other improvised stops can move under load and should not be treated as permanent motorcycle restraints.

Use a chock designed for the motorcycle’s front-wheel diameter and tire width. Some chocks simply capture and locate the wheel, while self-locking cradle designs may hold a motorcycle upright temporarily. Even a self-locking chock should never be treated as the only securement device. Each bike must have its own chock and its own independent set of straps.

Floor-mounted chocks must be installed according to the chock and trailer manufacturers’ instructions. Bolting only through thin plywood is generally not adequate for a heavily loaded restraint point. Fasteners may need to pass through reinforced flooring, steel backing plates, or structural members, depending on the trailer’s design. Before drilling, confirm the location of cross-members, wiring, brake lines, fuel-system components, and anything else below the floor. Removable chock systems should use mounting hardware specifically rated and designed for that purpose.

Do not select a universal center-to-center spacing before measuring the motorcycles. Position the bikes temporarily and check handlebars, mirrors, fairings, foot controls, panniers, and strap routes through the suspension’s normal range of movement. Staggering one chock slightly forward can create clearance between handlebars and luggage without forcing the motorcycles against opposite walls.

Chock placement also affects loaded tongue weight. There is no reliable rule that places every chock at a fixed percentage of floor length because the axle location, empty trailer balance, motorcycle center of gravity, gear placement, and tow-vehicle limits all matter. Load the trailer to maintain stable positive tongue weight within the trailer, coupler, hitch, and tow vehicle ratings. For many conventional bumper-pull trailers, approximately 10 to 15 percent of the loaded trailer weight on the hitch is a common target, but the trailer and tow-vehicle manufacturers’ instructions take priority. A tongue scale or vehicle scale is the best way to confirm the finished setup.

Spacing Between the Bikes

With both motorcycles seated in their chocks, leave enough clearance that no hard component can contact the other motorcycle as the trailer flexes and the bikes move slightly on their suspensions. Four to six inches may be workable at the closest point for some combinations, but it is not a universal minimum. Wide handlebars, mirrors, windshields, crash bars, panniers, and soft luggage may require considerably more room.

Measure the clearance at every likely contact point, not merely between the fuel tanks. Turn the handlebars only if the motorcycle manufacturer permits transport in that position, and make sure the steering cannot rotate enough for a lever, mirror, or hand guard to strike the neighboring bike. Do not use the steering lock as a substitute for proper securement unless the motorcycle manufacturer specifically directs you to do so.

Cruisers with tall or wide handlebars need different spacing than compact sportbikes. Adventure and touring motorcycles with mounted side cases can often be accommodated by placing one chock slightly ahead of the other. That offset is acceptable when the final load remains balanced, the ramp door can close, and each motorcycle has clear, unobstructed strap paths to appropriately rated anchors.

Never lean the motorcycles against one another or rely on padding between them as a restraint system. Padding can protect a surface from incidental rubbing, but it cannot control a motorcycle during braking, cornering, or an emergency maneuver. Each bike must remain stable even if every strap attached to the other motorcycle were removed.

Soft Ties to the Triple Clamps

Many motorcycles can be secured at a lower triple clamp, fork area, frame member, or another structural point, but no single attachment location is correct for every model. Always consult the motorcycle owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s transportation instructions first. Some motorcycles have brake hoses, electrical wiring, fairing panels, steering dampers, clip-on controls, or cast components that make a commonly suggested tie-down route unsuitable.

When the lower triple clamp is an approved and accessible attachment point, soft loops can keep metal hooks away from painted, polished, or plated surfaces. Route each loop so it bears against a solid structural area and cannot crush a hose, pull on a wire, rub a fork seal, or slide onto a sharp edge. Do not attach to handlebars unless the manufacturer approves that method or a model-specific handlebar harness is being used; hollow, rubber-mounted, or adjustable handlebars can bend or rotate under tie-down force.

Choose quality cam-buckle or ratchet straps with legible working load limit labels. The working load limit, not the much higher break-strength number sometimes emphasized in advertising, is the rating that matters. Straps, hooks, soft loops, anchors, track fittings, and mounting hardware form one securement system, and the system is limited by its lowest-rated component. Replace straps that are cut, abraded, sun-damaged, chemically contaminated, heat-damaged, or missing readable rating labels.

Strap width alone does not determine whether a tie-down is suitable. A properly rated 1-inch motorcycle strap is often convenient around a bike, while a wider strap can also be used safely if it fits the attachment points and can be tensioned without damaging the motorcycle. The important considerations are the labeled working load limit, hardware design, condition, routing, and the amount of tension applied.

Front straps should normally lead forward and outward from the motorcycle to rated floor anchors, creating both forward restraint and side-to-side stability. The exact angle depends on the bike, chock, and anchor layout. Avoid nearly vertical straps that provide little longitudinal or lateral control, and avoid routes that pull the motorcycle sideways out of the chock. Use closed hooks, snap hooks, carabiner-style tie-down ends, or hook keepers where practical so a momentary reduction in tension cannot let an open hook fall free.

Rear Tie-Down Points and Compression

The rear of each motorcycle should also be stabilized independently. Suitable attachment points may include approved frame sections, passenger-footpeg brackets, swingarm areas, or model-specific transport points. Rear axle components and swingarm spools should be used only when the motorcycle or securement-equipment manufacturer identifies them as appropriate tie-down locations. Avoid plastic bodywork, exhaust systems, brake lines, chain guards, turn-signal stalks, luggage racks of unknown capacity, and any component that can bend, loosen, or become hot.

Rear straps generally lead outward and somewhat rearward to control lateral movement and prevent the back tire from walking across the floor. Keep the straps clear of sharp edges, hot exhaust components, brake rotors, chains, belts, and sprockets. If the selected route could chafe, choose a different structural attachment point rather than depending on a thin protective rag.

Suspension compression must be sufficient to keep the motorcycle stable and maintain strap tension, but there is no universal percentage that applies to every fork, shock, strap arrangement, or chock system. Compress the suspension moderately and evenly without pulling it to the end of its travel. Excessive compression can unnecessarily load components and makes it harder to judge whether the bike is properly supported. Too little tension can allow the suspension to rebound enough for hooks to disengage or the motorcycle to move in its chock.

Some wheel-restraint systems secure the tires or unsprung components and require little suspension compression. If you use one of those systems, follow its manufacturer’s instructions exactly rather than combining it with a different technique. Do not insert an improvised object between the front tire and fender unless it is a purpose-built support approved for the motorcycle and installed as directed.

Tighten the two front straps gradually and approximately evenly, checking that the front wheel stays centered in the chock and the motorcycle remains vertical. Add the rear restraints and tension them enough to prevent lateral and rearward movement. Then inspect all four corners again. The bike should not rock independently of the trailer when pushed firmly at a structural point, but the suspension does not need to be pulled completely solid.

Secure one motorcycle completely before loading or working around the second one. If trailer space makes the inside tie-down points difficult to reach, plan the loading order in advance. Never leave the first bike supported only by a chock while positioning the second. During loading and unloading, keep the trailer coupled to the tow vehicle, set the tow vehicle’s parking brake, use appropriate wheel chocks, and use trailer stabilizers if required by the trailer manufacturer.

Why Enclosed Makes More Sense for Pairs

An open utility trailer can safely carry two motorcycles when it has sufficient payload capacity, usable width, correctly installed chocks, and rated anchor points. An enclosed trailer nevertheless offers practical advantages for frequent transport: protection from rain, road spray, airborne debris, and casual visibility, plus walls and a roof that can support lighting and organized storage when properly designed for those additions.

An enclosure does not eliminate the need for securement. Interior walls are not automatically structural tie-down points, and ordinary wall trim or plywood should never carry strap loads. Floor-mounted D-rings, recessed anchors, or track systems must be rated for cargo securement and attached to adequate structure using the manufacturer’s specified fasteners, backing plates, and spacing.

A 7×14 tandem-axle enclosed trailer can be a useful starting configuration for two motorcycles, but its GVWR cannot be assumed from its size or model family. Axle count, axle ratings, tires, wheels, coupler, frame, suspension, and manufacturer certification all affect the completed trailer’s rating. Read the federal certification label and the individual trailer’s paperwork. Calculate available payload by subtracting the trailer’s actual empty weight, plus permanently installed accessories and carried gear, from its GVWR.

Two motorcycles that each weigh 500 pounds may become a substantially larger load after fuel, luggage, chocks, spare tires, tools, riding equipment, cabinets, batteries, and other accessories are included. Large touring motorcycles can weigh close to or above 900 pounds in running order, so use the manufacturer’s ready-to-ride or curb weight and add the weight of installed accessories rather than relying on an advertised dry weight.

Wells Cargo, United Trailers, Darkhorse Cargo, and other manufacturers offer enclosed trailers in numerous configurations. GVWR, axle capacity, floor construction, wall framing, ramp-door rating, interior height, and tie-down equipment can differ even between trailers with the same nominal dimensions. Confirm every material specification on the actual unit or current factory build sheet instead of assuming that a brand uses one construction method or rating throughout its lineup.

Interior height matters as well. Measure the actual finished height and rear-door opening, especially if a motorcycle has a tall windshield, top case, antennas, or adventure-style mirrors. Extra headroom makes strap work more comfortable, but raising the trailer’s height can also increase aerodynamic drag and may affect tow-vehicle selection. Choose enough clearance to work safely without buying more trailer than the tow vehicle can comfortably control.

Remember that Indiana requires brakes on a trailer or semitrailer with a gross weight of at least 3,000 pounds under IC 9-19-3-3. A tandem-axle enclosed cargo trailer will commonly be equipped with electric brakes, but the buyer should verify which axles are braked, confirm breakaway-system operation, and use a compatible brake controller. Trailer brakes do not increase the tow vehicle’s published tow rating.

Quick Pre-Departure Checklist

  • Confirm that the tow vehicle, receiver, ball mount, hitch ball, coupler, safety chains, tires, wheels, axles, and trailer are all rated for the loaded combination
  • Verify the trailer is fully coupled, the latch is secured, the jack is raised, safety chains are crossed and attached correctly, and the breakaway cable is independently connected
  • Test running lights, turn signals, brake lights, electric brakes, and the breakaway system as directed by the manufacturer
  • Make sure both wheel chocks are installed with approved hardware and backed or reinforced as required
  • Confirm both front tires are fully seated and centered in their respective chocks
  • Use motorcycle-approved structural attachment points and keep straps away from hoses, wires, bodywork, controls, exhausts, chains, belts, and sharp edges
  • Use four appropriately routed restraints per motorcycle unless a purpose-built securement system specifies a different arrangement
  • Check the working load limits of straps, soft loops, track fittings, anchors, and mounting hardware; do not rely on advertised break strength
  • Route front straps forward and outward and rear straps to resist both lateral and rearward movement
  • Apply moderate, even suspension compression without bottoming the fork or shock
  • Confirm adequate clearance between handlebars, mirrors, windscreens, panniers, fairings, walls, doors, and the neighboring motorcycle
  • Secure loose strap tails so they cannot whip against paint, enter a wheel, or contact hot or moving components
  • Keep the motorcycles off their side stands and center stands during transport unless a purpose-built system or motorcycle manufacturer specifically requires otherwise
  • Secure helmets, ramps, toolboxes, fuel containers, stands, luggage, and every other loose item independently
  • Confirm the ramp door and side door are fully closed, latched, and locked before departure
  • Check tire pressures when cold and inspect trailer tires for damage, adequate tread, correct load rating, and age-related deterioration
  • Verify loaded tongue weight and make sure no tow-vehicle axle, payload, hitch, trailer, tire, or combined-weight rating is exceeded
  • Stop after the first 10 to 15 miles and re-check the coupling, wheel temperature, cargo clearance, and all tie-downs

That early inspection is essential. Webbing and soft loops can settle, the motorcycles’ tires can seat more deeply in their chocks, and newly loaded equipment can shift during the first few miles. Stop again periodically and after rough pavement, heavy braking, or any event that may have disturbed the load. Never attempt to adjust a strap while stopped on an unsafe shoulder.

What to Look for When Buying the Trailer

If you are buying specifically for two-bike hauling, compare usable interior width, wheel-box clearance, rear-door opening, floor length, interior height, ramp rating, payload capacity, and anchor layout. A wider 14-foot trailer may be more practical than a narrower 16-foot trailer when the motorcycles must travel side by side, but a staggered layout or oversized touring bikes may justify additional length as well.

Look for factory-installed recessed D-rings or cargo track with published working load limits and clearly documented mounting methods. E-track can provide useful adjustment as motorcycle combinations change, but the track is only as strong as its fittings, fasteners, backing, and supporting structure. Wall-mounted track should not be assumed suitable for primary motorcycle restraint. For the main tie-down loads, floor-mounted or structurally integrated anchors are generally preferable.

Inspect the floor construction before installing chocks or additional anchors. Ask where the steel cross-members are located, how thick the floor is, what fastener pattern the manufacturer permits, and whether drilling could affect wiring or warranty coverage. If a dealer or qualified installer adds the hardware, request the component ratings and installation information for your records.

Ramp-door capacity and transition angle are also important. The published ramp rating must accommodate the motorcycle, rider or helper, and any loading equipment on the ramp at the same time. A longer ramp, dovetail, or reduced transition angle can help prevent a low motorcycle from grounding at the threshold, but door length cannot be assumed from trailer body length. Measure the ramp and test the breakover clearance for the lowest motorcycle in the pair.

Whenever possible, walk a motorcycle up the ramp under controlled power or use a properly rated winch arrangement rather than riding into an enclosed trailer. Riding up leaves little room to correct a balance problem and exposes the rider to the roof, door frame, and the already loaded motorcycle. Use a spotter when handling a heavy touring bike, keep helpers away from pinch points, and make sure nobody stands directly behind a motorcycle on the ramp.

Capacity must be checked as a complete system. Trailer GVWR is not the same as payload, and tow rating is not the only tow-vehicle limit. Review the vehicle’s payload label, gross vehicle weight rating, gross axle weight ratings, gross combined weight rating, maximum tongue weight, receiver rating, and the hitch-equipment ratings. Use whichever applicable rating is lowest, and remember that passengers and cargo in the tow vehicle reduce available payload for tongue weight.

For Indiana operation, verify that the trailer is correctly titled and registered for its weight and use, that required brakes and lighting are operational, and that the tow vehicle is properly licensed for the combination. CDL requirements depend on the vehicle’s use and weight ratings; for a Class A CDL, the federal threshold generally involves a combination rated at 26,001 pounds or more when the towed vehicle has a GVWR above 10,000 pounds. Personal recreational transport and commercial transport can be treated differently, so operators near regulatory thresholds should confirm the rules that apply to their particular use.
