Your trailer starts moving side to side at highway speed. The back of your truck follows, and suddenly you are gripping the wheel while trying to remember every piece of towing advice you have heard. That is trailer sway, and improper tongue weight is one of its most common causes. Tire condition and pressure, speed, crosswinds, steering inputs, suspension problems, and an improperly matched tow vehicle can also contribute, so sway should never be blamed on one factor without inspecting the complete setup.
Getting tongue weight right is not complicated, but it is specific to the trailer, tow vehicle, hitch, and load. There is a target range, a reliable way to measure it, and a straightforward process for correcting it. Here is what you need to know.
What Tongue Weight Actually Is
Tongue weight (TW) is the downward force a conventional bumper-pull trailer’s coupler places on the hitch ball or hitch connection of the tow vehicle. Think of it as the portion of the loaded trailer’s weight supported by the truck instead of the trailer axles. Cargo position, trailer design, axle location, fluids, accessories, and anything carried ahead of or behind the axles can change that force.
Too little tongue weight can leave too much of the trailer’s mass behind its axles, making the combination more susceptible to sway. Too much tongue weight can overload the receiver, hitch components, tow vehicle payload capacity, rear gross axle weight rating, or tires. Excessive rear suspension compression can also remove load from the tow vehicle’s front axle, reducing steering response, braking balance, headlight aim, and overall stability.
Tongue weight counts as cargo carried by the tow vehicle. That means passengers, tools, a bed cap, fuel or auxiliary tanks, cargo in the bed, and the trailer’s tongue weight must all fit within the truck’s payload and axle ratings. Available payload can become the limiting factor even when the advertised maximum trailer-tow rating appears sufficient.
The 10-15% Rule
For many conventional bumper-pull trailers, a commonly recommended starting range is 10% to 15% of the trailer’s actual loaded weight, also called Gross Trailer Weight or GTW. The exact requirement in the tow vehicle, trailer, and hitch manufacturers’ instructions takes priority because some combinations specify a narrower target or a different percentage.
If the trailer and everything loaded on it weigh 8,000 lbs, a 10% to 15% range equals 800 to 1,200 lbs of tongue weight. If an equipment trailer actually weighs 14,000 lbs when loaded, the same calculation produces 1,400 to 2,100 lbs. A cargo trailer weighing 4,500 lbs in ready-to-tow condition would produce a calculated range of 450 to 675 lbs.
Use the trailer’s measured loaded weight for this calculation, not its GVWR. GVWR is the maximum allowable weight of the trailer and its cargo; it is not necessarily what the trailer weighs on a particular trip. The trailer’s actual weight must remain at or below its GVWR, and its axle loads must remain within the applicable gross axle weight ratings.
This range exists because load balance affects stability. Insufficient tongue weight can allow a disturbance from a passing truck, crosswind, steering correction, pothole, or road seam to develop into sway. Excessive tongue weight can overload components and reduce the tow vehicle’s ability to steer and brake as designed. Neither condition should be addressed by simply driving more slowly and hoping for the best.
Always check the complete set of ratings before you load up:
- Receiver and hitch-component ratings, including separate weight-carrying and weight-distributing limits when shown
- Tow vehicle maximum trailer and tongue-weight limits, using the owner’s manual, towing guide, certification labels, and equipment-specific information
- Tow vehicle GVWR, front and rear GAWR, payload, and tire load limits
- Trailer GVWR, GAWR, tire ratings, and coupler rating, using the certification or VIN label and component markings
- GCWR, which limits the allowable combined weight of the loaded tow vehicle and loaded trailer
The complete combination must comply with every applicable rating. A receiver’s class designation or tube size alone does not establish its capacity. Two receivers that look similar may have different tongue-weight limits, and a receiver may carry one rating in weight-carrying mode and another when used with an approved weight-distribution system. The ball mount, hitch ball, coupler, safety chains, and weight-distribution equipment must also be properly rated. Use the lowest applicable component or vehicle limit rather than relying on a generic hitch-class chart.
Why Low Tongue Weight Causes Sway
Trailer sway is an unstable side-to-side yawing motion. When too much of a trailer’s loaded mass sits behind its axles, the trailer can become less resistant to lateral disturbances. The trailer begins to rotate slightly around its connection to the tow vehicle, the tow vehicle responds, and the motion can grow if the combination does not naturally damp it.
Speed makes the problem substantially worse. A poorly balanced trailer that seems manageable at a lower speed can become unstable as speed increases. Crosswinds, downhill travel, evasive steering, worn tires, incorrect tire pressure, loose suspension or hitch components, and a trailer that is too large for the tow vehicle can further reduce the safety margin.
Sway is not limited to highway on-ramps. It can begin during acceleration, after a passing commercial vehicle creates a pressure wave, on a downhill grade, during a lane change, or when a tire or wheel encounters a road defect. Any repeated sway is a warning to slow safely, stop, and inspect the combination.
A compatible weight-distribution hitch and sway-control system can improve handling when installed and adjusted correctly, but neither replaces proper loading. Sway-control hardware cannot make an overloaded, tail-heavy, mechanically defective, or mismatched trailer combination safe.
Measuring Tongue Weight
You have three practical options. Whichever method you use, measure the trailer in its ready-to-tow condition. Include the cargo, batteries, spare tires, tools, fluids, accessories, and other items that will be aboard during the trip. Park on firm, level ground, secure the trailer against movement, and measure at approximately the normal coupler height because a badly nose-high or nose-low position can affect the result.
1. Tongue Weight Scale
A dedicated tongue-weight scale provides a direct reading when positioned and used according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Select a scale whose capacity comfortably exceeds the expected tongue weight. Models are available for light utility trailers as well as heavier bumper-pull applications, but a scale intended for a small trailer may be overloaded by a heavy equipment trailer.
Place the scale beneath the coupler or at the approved measuring point, keep it vertical, and lower the trailer gradually. Do not shock-load the scale. If the measurement is taken beneath the tongue jack instead of at the coupler, the reading can differ because the jack and coupler are at different distances from the axles. Follow the scale manufacturer’s correction instructions when the measuring point is not directly beneath the coupler.
2. Public Scale or Feed Store Scale
A certified vehicle scale is the most useful option when you need to verify the entire combination, not just tongue weight. With the trailer connected and the weight-distribution spring bars disengaged if the applicable weighing procedure requires it, record the tow vehicle’s front- and rear-axle weights and the trailer-axle weight. Then weigh the tow vehicle alone in the same trip-ready condition, with the same occupants and cargo.
The difference between the combined weight carried by the tow vehicle’s axles while hitched and the tow vehicle’s unhitched weight is the approximate tongue weight. Do not use only the change in rear-axle weight: hitching a trailer can remove weight from the front axle and transfer it to the rear, so the rear-axle increase alone can overstate the actual tongue weight.
Scale tickets also let you compare the loaded trailer weight, individual axle-group loads, tow vehicle GVWR, rear GAWR, and GCWR with their limits. Follow the scale operator’s directions and the tow vehicle or weight-distribution manufacturer’s prescribed weighing procedure.
3. Bathroom Scale Method (light loads only)
A bathroom scale can be used for a light trailer when the expected tongue weight is safely within the scale’s capacity. A lever arrangement made with strong pipe, blocking, and a rigid beam can multiply the scale’s usable range, but the dimensions and calculation must be set up correctly. For example, the tongue load is calculated from the scale reading and the ratio of the lever-arm distances; it is not automatically the number shown on the scale.
Every support must be stable and strong enough for the expected load, and the trailer must be chocked. Never place hands, feet, or other body parts under an unsupported tongue. If the expected weight approaches the scale or support capacity, use a purpose-built tongue-weight scale or a certified vehicle scale instead.
There is no GVWR at which guessing becomes acceptable. A scale is advisable whenever cargo position can change, and it is particularly important for enclosed, equipment, and other trailers whose balance is difficult to judge visually. The time to discover an unsafe load balance is before entering I-69, not after sway begins.
Adjusting Your Load
Once you know the actual tongue weight and loaded trailer weight, correcting the percentage usually means changing cargo position while remaining within all cargo-securement and axle limits. The basic direction is straightforward:
- Tongue weight too low? Move appropriate cargo forward, toward the coupler, without exceeding tongue, hitch, tow vehicle, tire, or front-of-trailer structural limits.
- Tongue weight too high? Move appropriate cargo rearward in small increments, without creating a tail-heavy condition or exceeding the trailer’s axle and tire ratings.
The often-repeated suggestion to place 60% of the cargo ahead of the trailer axles is only a rough starting point, not a measurement rule. Axle placement, deck length, cargo shape, trailer empty weight, and the location of tanks, batteries, toolboxes, ramps, and spare tires all affect the final balance. Load the trailer, measure its actual tongue weight, reposition the cargo if needed, and measure again.
On an enclosed cargo trailer, plan box and equipment placement before loading. Put dense items low, secure them to appropriate anchor points, and distribute weight laterally so the trailer is not substantially heavier on one side. Heavy cargo should not simply be stacked at the extreme front in an attempt to prevent sway because that can overload the tongue, coupler, hitch, rear axle, or tires.
For a flatbed or equipment trailer such as the Diamond C LPX, machine position can change tongue weight dramatically. An 8,000 lb skid steer positioned too far behind the axles can create insufficient tongue weight even when the trailer remains below its GVWR. Move the machine in small increments until the measured tongue weight is within the required range, then secure it with properly rated tiedowns at suitable attachment points. Attachments, buckets, counterweights, fuel, and other equipment are part of the cargo weight and can meaningfully affect balance.
Do not use the trailer tongue jack, stabilizer legs, ramps, or visual suspension squat as substitutes for weighing. Also recheck the load after adding or removing attachments and whenever cargo could shift, settle, leak, or be partially unloaded.
Gooseneck and Fifth-Wheel Trailers
Gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers impose vertical load through a hitch mounted in or over the truck bed, closer to the rear axle than a conventional receiver hitch. That vertical load is commonly called gooseneck hitch weight or fifth-wheel pin weight. Many such trailers are designed around approximately 15% to 25% of actual loaded trailer weight, but the trailer and tow vehicle manufacturers’ requirements control.
The more favorable hitch location does not create unlimited capacity. Pin or gooseneck weight consumes truck payload and must remain within the truck’s GVWR, rear GAWR, tire ratings, hitch rating, bed or mounting-system limits, and any manufacturer-specific loading requirements. The trailer must also stay within its GVWR and axle ratings, while the complete combination must remain within GCWR.
A heavy gooseneck can place several thousand pounds on the truck. Use a suitable scale procedure to determine the actual vertical load instead of estimating from trailer length or cargo weight. For Diamond C FMAX gooseneck flatbeds, current GVWR varies substantially by model and configuration, from 15,500 lbs on the FMAX207 through configurations rated as high as 40,000 lbs. Match the specific trailer’s certification label and loaded axle weights to a properly equipped tow vehicle.
When to Use a Weight Distribution Hitch
There is no universal rule that a weight-distribution hitch becomes necessary when tongue weight reaches a fixed percentage of tow vehicle curb weight. Use one when the tow vehicle manufacturer requires or permits it for the trailer weight involved, when the receiver’s applicable rating calls for it, or when a properly selected system is needed to restore the front-axle load as directed by the vehicle manufacturer.
A weight-distribution hitch uses spring bars and leverage to redistribute some of the load imposed at the hitch among the tow vehicle’s front and rear axles and the trailer axles. It can improve vehicle attitude and steering response when correctly selected, installed, and adjusted. Some systems also incorporate sway control, while others require separate compatible equipment.
Weight distribution does not reduce the trailer’s actual tongue weight, increase the trailer’s GVWR, or increase the tow vehicle’s GCWR, GVWR, axle, tire, or payload ratings. The system must be rated for the measured loaded tongue weight and compatible with the receiver, trailer frame, coupler, brakes, and tow vehicle. Compatibility deserves special attention with surge brakes, certain trailer-frame designs, and manufacturer restrictions.
Follow the tow vehicle manufacturer’s setup target. Depending on the vehicle, the instructions may specify how much of the front-axle load or front-fender height should be restored after hitch adjustment. More spring-bar tension is not automatically better; excessive adjustment can create poor handling or overload components.

These figures are calculations for the general 10% to 15% bumper-pull guideline, not permission to load to the listed amount. Compare the result with the exact limits for the tow vehicle, receiver, ball mount, hitch ball, coupler, weight-distribution system, rear axle, tires, and trailer. If the required tongue weight exceeds any applicable limit, unloading cargo, changing the load, using appropriately rated equipment, or selecting a more capable tow vehicle and trailer combination may be necessary.
Remember that payload is often the first limit reached. A truck can be below its maximum trailer rating while exceeding its GVWR or rear GAWR after passengers, bed cargo, accessories, and tongue weight are added.
What to Do If Sway Starts
If sway develops on the road, remain calm and hold the steering wheel firmly while keeping the tow vehicle pointed straight. Avoid abrupt steering, hard braking, and sudden acceleration. Gradually release the accelerator and allow the combination to slow. If the trailer has operable electric brakes and the controller provides a manual override, applying the trailer brakes manually can help pull the trailer straight. Use a smooth, appropriate input rather than grabbing the control abruptly.
Do not try to accelerate out of sway. Do not make sharp steering corrections, and do not continue at the same speed once the combination settles. After slowing under control, signal carefully and pull completely off the roadway at a safe location. Inspect cargo position and securement, hitch engagement, safety chains, breakaway equipment, tires, wheels, suspension, and visible trailer components before continuing. If the cause cannot be identified and corrected, arrange assistance rather than resuming highway travel.
A proportional electric brake controller with a manual control can provide the needed trailer-brake input, but it must be installed, adjusted, and tested according to its instructions. Confirm brake operation during the pre-trip inspection. Indiana law requires a trailer or semitrailer with a declared gross weight of at least 3,000 lbs to be equipped with brakes adequate to control, stop, and hold it, and those brakes must be designed so the driver can apply them from the towing vehicle.
Finding the Right Trailer for Your Load
A lot of tongue-weight problems begin with a trailer that is poorly matched to the cargo. A deck that is too short may leave too little room to position a machine correctly. A trailer with inadequate payload capacity can be overloaded before proper balance is achieved. A trailer that is much larger than the tow vehicle can also exceed payload, axle, hitch, or combined-weight limits even if the cargo itself fits on the deck.
Select a trailer by more than nominal deck size or GVWR. Consider the trailer’s actual empty weight as equipped, usable payload, axle and tire ratings, deck dimensions, axle placement, loading angle, tiedown locations, coupler type, brake configuration, and the weight and center of gravity of the cargo. Payload is generally the trailer’s GVWR minus its actual empty weight, but installed options and accessories can change empty weight, so the certification label and an actual scale reading are the best references for a specific unit.
