You’re loaded up, it’s 28 degrees, and the sky over Owen County looks like it can’t decide between sleet and snow. INDOT TrafficWise is already showing a crash somewhere along your route, and you’ve still got 80 miles to go. This is the reality of winter hauling in Indiana, and pretending otherwise gets equipment damaged and people hurt.
Indiana winters are not the worst in the country, but they are unpredictable. Temperatures routinely move above and below freezing during the winter hauling season, sometimes within the same day. That freeze-thaw pattern allows wet pavement to refreeze after sunset, in shaded areas, on entrance ramps, and on bridge decks that lose heat faster than pavement resting on the ground. When INDOT applies salt brine before a storm and chloride-based deicers during and after it, trailers running I-65, I-69, US-231, and surrounding state routes are exposed to corrosive road spray from the coupler to the rear crossmember.
The Two Interstates That Matter Most for Indiana Haulers
If you haul through central or northern Indiana, you are likely to spend time on I-65 or I-69. Both corridors carry commercial vehicles, farm traffic, equipment haulers, and everyday commuters throughout the year. Both can become genuinely hazardous during snow, sleet, freezing rain, or rapid temperature drops.
I-65 runs north-south through Indiana and connects the Louisville area, Indianapolis, Lafayette, and northwest Indiana. Conditions can change substantially between those regions. The Indianapolis-to-Lafayette corridor may receive snow, sleet, freezing rain, or a mixture of all three during the same system. Elevated ramps, overpasses, exposed bridge decks, and interchanges can refreeze while the main pavement still looks wet. Treat every bridge and ramp as a possible traction change, especially when the temperature is hovering near 32 degrees.
I-69 connects southern Indiana with Indianapolis and continues north through the Anderson, Muncie-area, Marion, and Fort Wayne corridor toward Michigan. North of Indianapolis, long stretches pass through open agricultural country. Crosswinds can push an enclosed trailer or tall equipment load sideways, while blowing snow can cover a recently plowed lane and reduce visibility within minutes. The roadway may be mostly clear in one county and snow-covered in the next, so a clear departure point does not guarantee a clear destination.
Indiana does not impose a standing statewide requirement to carry or install tire chains on these interstates. Indiana law permits chains of reasonable proportions when snow, ice, or another condition makes them necessary for safety. That is different from the mandatory chain-control systems used in some mountain states. Chains are not a substitute for judgment, however. Reduce speed before entering a slick area, increase following distance substantially, avoid abrupt steering or braking, and treat bridge decks as a separate hazard from the pavement leading up to them.
Trailer Brake Performance in Cold Weather
Cold weather does not create a normal electrical “delay” inside properly operating electric trailer brakes. Brake-controller output travels to the magnets immediately. What winter does expose is marginal wiring, corroded grounds, loose connectors, low available battery capacity, poorly adjusted brake shoes, moisture contamination, and damaged wiring that may have worked acceptably during dry summer weather.
Indiana requires a trailer or semitrailer at or above the applicable 3,000 lb gross-weight threshold to have brakes adequate to control, stop, and hold the trailer. The system must be controllable from the towing vehicle and must automatically apply the trailer brakes in an accidental breakaway. That makes the controller, seven-way connection, axle wiring, brake assemblies, breakaway switch, and breakaway battery one complete safety system rather than separate accessories.
On a current Diamond C LPX equipment trailer, which is offered in configurations from 15,500 to 24,000 lb GVWR and uses Lippert axles as standard equipment, weak braking should never be dismissed as a normal cold-weather characteristic. The 15,500 lb package starts with two 7,000 lb Lippert axles, while higher-capacity configurations use different axle and running-gear packages. Regardless of configuration, a noticeable change in brake response should be investigated before the trailer is taken onto an icy highway.
Before any winter haul, check these things:
- Test the complete brake system rather than looking for one fixed multimeter reading. Brake-controller voltage varies with gain, manual-lever position, controller design, and whether the controller is proportional or time-delayed. Confirm that the controller recognizes the trailer, use the manual override during a low-speed test on a clear and dry surface, and check voltage drop and amperage under load if braking is weak.
- Inspect and charge the breakaway battery. Cold temperatures temporarily reduce the usable capacity of lead-acid batteries, so an aging or partially charged battery may fail a breakaway test in winter even if it appeared acceptable during warmer weather. Test the system according to the trailer and breakaway-system instructions, and never leave the breakaway pin pulled longer than necessary because that can overheat the brake magnets and drain the battery.
- Inspect the seven-way plug, junction box, axle wiring, grounds, and brake connections. Road salt, conductive slush, loose grounds, pinched wires, and poorly sealed splices are common causes of intermittent or weak electric-brake operation. Clean corrosion properly and repair damaged wiring with sealed, weather-resistant connections.
- Check brake adjustment and wheel-end condition. Electric drum brakes that are out of adjustment may feel weak even when controller output is normal. Inspect for worn shoes, damaged magnets, grease contamination, broken hardware, leaking seals, and excessive drum wear at the service intervals specified by the axle and brake manufacturer.
- Set controller gain for the actual trailer and load every time conditions change. A braked trailer behaves differently empty, partially loaded, and at working weight. Gain that is too low allows the truck to do too much of the stopping; gain that is too high can lock the trailer wheels and initiate a skid. Trailer GVWR alone does not determine the correct setting.
Hydraulic surge brakes appear on some marine and specialty trailers, while heavier commercial trailers may use electric-over-hydraulic systems. A healthy hydraulic system should not become noticeably sluggish during an ordinary 20- or 30-degree Indiana day simply because the brake fluid is cold. Slow response can indicate water-contaminated fluid, corrosion, a sticking actuator, damaged lines, frozen road contamination around the coupler, or neglected maintenance. Follow the actuator manufacturer’s fluid specification and service interval, and verify that the brake arrangement complies with Indiana requirements for the trailer’s weight and use.
Reduced Speed Is Not Optional
Indiana does not establish a blanket 65 mph interstate limit simply because a trailer is attached. Maximum lawful speed depends on the posted roadway limit and applicable vehicle classification. On qualifying rural interstate sections, vehicles within the lower declared-weight class may encounter a 70 mph limit, while vehicles with a declared gross weight greater than 26,000 lb are generally limited to 65 mph. Urban interstate sections and specifically posted areas may be lower.
None of those maximum limits grants permission to maintain that speed during snow or ice. Indiana law separately requires every driver to travel at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for the actual weather, road, visibility, traffic, vehicle, and load conditions. Driving too fast for the conditions can be an infraction even when the vehicle is below the number printed on the sign.
A conservative decision guide used by experienced haulers looks more like this:

These are not legal speed limits, and they are not promises that a listed speed will be safe. Actual conditions may require going substantially slower or stopping entirely. Even a mid-size 7×16 enclosed cargo trailer can add several thousand pounds to the combination once tools, materials, or equipment are loaded. Its exact empty weight, payload capacity, and GVWR depend on the manufacturer and configuration, but none of those trailers will stop or change direction like an unloaded passenger car.
Improper load distribution makes the problem worse. A rear-heavy bumper-pull trailer can develop sway, while excessive forward loading can overload the hitch, rear axle, tires, or coupler. Position cargo according to the trailer and tow-vehicle manufacturers’ requirements, remain within every axle and tire rating, and verify tongue or pin weight instead of guessing. Secure equipment with correctly rated chains, straps, binders, and attachment points, then recheck the securement after the first few miles and during every stop.
Slow down before reaching the bridge deck, curve, ramp, stopped traffic, or drifted section. Braking hard after the trailer is already on ice transfers weight and can cause the tow vehicle or trailer to lose lateral control. Smooth steering, gradual throttle changes, early braking, and enough space to stop without activating ABS continuously are more important than maintaining a planned arrival time.
Salt Corrosion: The Problem That Keeps Billing You
INDOT uses salt brine for anti-icing when conditions are appropriate and applies chloride-based deicers to help prevent or break the bond between snow, ice, and pavement. Those materials help keep Indiana interstates, U.S. routes, and state roads passable, but the same chloride residue is aggressive on trailers.
Salt water is conductive. It accelerates ordinary corrosion on exposed steel, promotes pitting on aluminum, attacks unprotected electrical contacts, and increases galvanic corrosion where dissimilar metals remain wet in contact with one another. High-risk locations include the coupler, hitch hardware, safety-chain attachments, jack components, suspension hardware, brake backing plates, wheel fasteners, wiring grounds, seven-way connector, breakaway switch, door hardware, ramp hinges, and any place where coating has been chipped by road debris.
What this looks like in practice is gradual rather than dramatic. A trailer that looked clean in October may show rust staining around damaged coating by March. Ground connections develop resistance. Fasteners begin seizing. The breakaway cable or switch becomes difficult to operate. Ramp hinges bind, plug terminals turn green, and salt remains packed behind fenders or inside frame crevices long after the visible road surface has dried.
Do not assume corrosion will automatically be covered by a trailer warranty. Coverage varies by manufacturer and by the cause of the damage. Current Diamond C limited coating terms specifically place responsibility on the owner to clean the trailer after exposure to corrosive substances such as road salt and exclude corrosion or deterioration resulting from neglect or insufficient maintenance. Photographing damage and keeping basic maintenance records can also be useful if a legitimate coating or workmanship concern develops.
The corrosion story is different depending on what material your trailer is built from:
- Powder-coated steel frames, including current Diamond C steel trailers: Diamond C uses its DM Difference Maker multi-stage coating system, which includes surface preparation, pretreatment, primer, and a cured powder topcoat. It provides significantly better protection than bare or casually painted steel, but no coating can protect an area where impact damage has exposed the substrate. Clean chips, remove loose corrosion, and repair damaged coating with an approved touch-up process before salt works underneath the surrounding finish.
- Galvanized steel frames and components: The zinc layer provides sacrificial corrosion protection and generally resists red rust better than uncoated steel. Galvanizing is not corrosion-proof, however. Cut edges, weld repairs, worn areas, fasteners, brakes, wiring, and non-galvanized accessories still require inspection and washing.
- All-aluminum trailers: Aluminum does not develop the same red rust as carbon steel, but chloride exposure can cause pitting and can accelerate galvanic corrosion around steel hardware, stainless fasteners, hinges, electrical grounds, and other dissimilar-metal joints. Also verify what “aluminum trailer” means on the specific unit. Some enclosed trailers use aluminum exterior skin over a steel chassis rather than an all-aluminum structural frame.
Cleaning should happen after salt-heavy trips, not only once at the end of winter. Rinse the underframe, suspension, rear crossmember, coupler area, ramps, fender interiors, jack, and safety-chain mounts with clean water. Use enough flow to dissolve and carry away residue, but do not direct high-pressure spray into wheel seals, hubs, brake assemblies, electrical enclosures, connector cavities, or the breakaway switch. High-pressure water can drive contamination past seals that would resist ordinary road spray.
After washing, allow the trailer to drain and dry. Clean the seven-way connector with products intended for electrical contacts, protect seals and connection areas with an appropriate dielectric or corrosion-inhibiting product, and lubricate coupler, jack, ramp, latch, and hinge points according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not spray oil or protectant onto brake friction surfaces, tires, wood decking, or any surface used for traction.
Pre-Trip Checklist for a Winter Haul
This is not the generic “check your tires” list. This is specific to cold-weather trailer hauling on Indiana routes.
- Tire pressure: Inflation pressure commonly changes by roughly 1-2 PSI for every 10-degree temperature change. Check every trailer and tow-vehicle tire when cold, including the spare. Inflate according to the trailer certification label, tire-load requirements, and manufacturer guidance. Do not automatically use the maximum pressure molded into the sidewall unless that is the specified cold operating pressure for the trailer and load.
- Coupler latch: Ice, packed snow, dirt, or hardened grease can prevent a ball coupler from seating completely. Visually confirm that the coupler is fully down on the correct-size ball, close and secure the latch, install the required pin or lock, and raise the tongue slightly with the jack to confirm engagement before fully retracting the jack. Inspect gooseneck couplers, locking pins, safety hardware, and hitch-ball areas with the same care.
- Safety chains: Use chains with adequate ratings and connect them only to approved tow-vehicle attachment points. Cross bumper-pull safety chains under the tongue when the hitch design and manufacturer instructions call for it, leaving enough slack to turn without allowing the chains to drag. Crossed chains may help cradle a disconnected tongue, but they do not guarantee that the trailer will remain upright or controllable.
- Breakaway cable: Attach it to a dedicated point on the tow vehicle rather than wrapping it around the hitch ball or attaching it only to a safety chain. Route it so normal turning cannot pull the pin and a true separation will activate it before the safety chains reach their full extension.
- Brake controller function: Confirm that the controller recognizes the trailer and conduct a manual-activation test at low speed on a clear, dry surface before entering traffic. The trailer brakes should apply smoothly and firmly without immediately locking. Investigate warning messages, intermittent connection indications, pulling, grinding, or weak response before departure.
- Load distribution: Keep the center of gravity as low as practical and distribute weight according to the trailer manufacturer’s requirements. Do not simply push every machine as far forward as possible. Confirm gross trailer weight, axle loading, tire capacity, hitch capacity, and tongue or pin weight. Heavy winter attachments, buckets, pallets, and snow-covered equipment all count toward the load.
- Cargo securement: Remove loose snow, ice, mud, and debris before loading. Use rated securement equipment and approved tie-down points. Confirm that hydraulic attachments, ramps, doors, lids, jacks, and loose accessories are locked or restrained. Recheck binders and straps after the load settles because cold, vibration, and melting ice can reduce tension.
- Lights and reflectors: Road spray and slush can cover tail lights, clearance lights, reflectors, and the license plate quickly. Verify every lighting circuit before leaving and clean the lenses whenever accumulation reduces visibility. Do not wait for a one-hour interval if slush is already covering the rear of the trailer.
- Wheels and wheel ends: Inspect tire tread, sidewalls, valve stems, lug nuts, hubs, dust caps, and visible grease-seal areas. Follow the manufacturer’s wheel-fastener torque procedure and re-torque schedule. After the first stop, cautiously check for a wheel or hub that is noticeably hotter than the others, which may indicate a bearing or brake problem.
- Emergency equipment: Carry reflective triangles, a flashlight, charged phone, warm clothing, gloves, blankets, shovel, traction material, basic tools, and equipment appropriate for changing the trailer’s tire. Make sure the jack and lug tools are actually rated and sized for the loaded trailer rather than assuming the truck’s factory jack will work.
When to Postpone the Haul
The honest answer that many dealers and haulers do not say loudly enough is that sometimes the correct decision is not to go. Indiana’s county travel-status system does not use official “Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3” terminology. The recognized categories are Advisory, Watch, and Warning.
An Advisory is the lowest category and means routine travel or activities may be restricted in hazardous areas, so drivers should use caution or avoid those locations. A Watch means conditions are threatening public safety and only essential travel, such as emergency travel or necessary travel to and from work, is recommended. A Warning is the highest category. Travel may be restricted to emergency-management workers, and the public is directed to refrain from travel and comply with emergency instructions.
An ordinary trailer delivery, equipment pickup, or inventory transfer is not worth challenging a county Warning. Even without a formal Warning, active freezing rain, near-zero visibility, repeated crashes, closed lanes, or an inability to keep the combination stable are sufficient reasons to postpone the haul. A customer would rather receive a trailer late than receive a damaged trailer or a call from an emergency responder.
Check road conditions at 511in.org before departure whenever freezing temperatures or winter precipitation are possible. Check the Indiana Department of Homeland Security County Travel Status Map separately because county Advisories, Watches, and Warnings are issued by local authorities and may change while you are on the road.
Check the entire route, not only the departure county. A run from Owen County toward Indianapolis and then north on I-69 can pass through multiple counties with different road treatments, snowfall rates, wind exposure, and travel statuses. Review the route again at fuel or inspection stops, and have a safe parking alternative identified before conditions deteriorate. An interstate shoulder is not a suitable place to wait out freezing rain unless an emergency leaves no safer option.
