Fall Pre-Storage Checklist: Wind Down Your Trailer Right

The last load of the season is off the trailer and you’re ready to park it. But pulling it under a tree, dropping the jack, and walking away is one of the fastest ways to turn dependable equipment into a spring headache. Corroded electrical connections, contaminated bearings, underinflated tires, deteriorated deck boards, seized ramp hardware, discharged batteries, and lights that fail when the trailer goes back to work are all easier to prevent than repair. The fix is a focused fall wind-down before freezing weather settles into Indiana.

This isn’t a deep-dive into building a winter storage shed or renting a climate-controlled unit. That’s a different conversation. This checklist is about the time you spend cleaning, inspecting, servicing, and properly parking the trailer before it sits for three to five months. Plan on at least two or three focused hours, plus whatever drying time the weather requires. Do it right and you can pull the trailer out in spring with a much shorter pre-trip repair list.

Start With a Full Wash

Wash the entire trailer before you inspect or store it. Road salt, mud, manure, fertilizer residue, silage, gravel dust, and construction debris can hold moisture against steel and accelerate corrosion. Fertilizers, deicing chemicals, and animal waste are especially aggressive and should not remain on the frame, fasteners, deck, suspension, or painted surfaces through the winter.

A pressure washer can be useful, but it should not be aimed directly into wheel hubs, bearing seals, brake backing plates, electrical connectors, hydraulic components, door seals, roof seams, or vent openings. Use a wide fan pattern, reasonable pressure, and enough distance to remove dirt without driving water past seals or lifting paint and powder coating. Mild automotive detergent and a soft brush are safer around wiring, decals, wood fibers, and enclosed-trailer seams.

Pay attention to the underside of the frame rails, crossmembers, spring hangers, equalizers, fender backs, stake pockets, rub rails, coupler area, and any ledges where debris accumulates. On Diamond C trailers protected by the DM Difference Maker multi-stage coating system, routine cleaning is still important. A durable coating slows corrosion, but it cannot protect steel indefinitely when salt or fertilizer is packed against a chipped or abraded area.

On enclosed cargo trailers from manufacturers such as Wells Cargo, Legend, and Darkhorse Cargo, clean the wheel boxes, lower wall edges, rear threshold, door tracks, front cap, roof-edge gutters, and the underside without directing high-pressure water into seams. On an equipment trailer such as a Diamond C LPX or a Liberty equipment trailer, remove dirt from between wood deck boards, around the dovetail, beneath removable ramps, inside stake pockets, and along the frame-to-deck connection. On a steel deck, clear debris from seams, traction bars, pockets, and recessed areas instead of assuming rain will wash them clean.

Let the trailer dry completely before covering it or closing an enclosed body for storage. Drying time depends on temperature, humidity, shade, airflow, and how much water remains in seams and cavities. Use compressed air carefully around non-brake areas, a leaf blower, clean towels, or an additional dry day if necessary. Do not cover a trailer simply because the visible top surface feels dry while the underside, door tracks, deck joints, or enclosed interior are still damp.

Deck and Body Inspection

Inspect the deck after it has been washed and allowed to dry. A wet deck can be slippery, and water may temporarily hide discoloration or make otherwise sound wood feel softer than it is. Walk the deck carefully and look for boards that flex, split around fasteners, pull away from the frame, or show deep decay. Pay particular attention to the rear loading area, dovetail, front corners, beneath parked equipment positions, and around stake pockets or other places where water and debris collect.

On wood-floor trailers, probe questionable areas carefully with a blunt awl or screwdriver. Sound treated lumber should resist the tool; decayed wood may feel soft, fibrous, or hollow. Replace damaged boards with material that matches the trailer manufacturer’s required thickness, width, grade, treatment, and attachment method. Deck lumber is part of the load-supporting system, so an undersized board, unsuitable fastener, or poorly supported splice can create a weak point even when the repair looks acceptable from above.

Do not install new lumber over rusted crossmembers or conceal structural damage beneath replacement boards. With the damaged board removed, inspect the supporting steel, welds, fasteners, and contact surfaces. If a crossmember is bent, cracked, deeply scaled, or perforated, have the frame evaluated before installing the new deck. Allow replacement treated lumber to dry as appropriate before applying any manufacturer-approved wood treatment, and avoid slick film-forming coatings on loading surfaces where traction matters.

On painted or powder-coated steel, look for chips, impact damage, rust staining, and bubbling around exposed metal. Remove loose corrosion without grinding away sound parent metal, clean the area, and seal it with a compatible primer and topcoat. For a Diamond C trailer with the DM Difference Maker coating system, ask the dealer about an appropriate field touch-up product and preparation method. A field repair will not duplicate the factory’s blasted, pretreated, zinc-epoxy-primed, oven-cured process, but promptly sealing a chip is much better than allowing exposed steel to remain wet all winter.

Aluminum requires a different approach. It does not develop red rust like carbon steel, so do not automatically apply a steel rust converter or steel-only primer. Inspect aluminum decking and body panels for cracks, distortion, loose fasteners, galvanic corrosion around dissimilar metals, and white powdery oxidation. Use products specifically approved for aluminum, and have cracks near structural welds or load-bearing members evaluated by a qualified trailer repair facility.

Check ramp gates, slide-in ramps, fold-down ramps, dovetails, and loading systems while the trailer is clean. Ramp construction and capacity vary by model and option, so never rely on a generic per-ramp rating. A Diamond C LPX, for example, may be equipped with spring-assisted flip-knee ramps, MAX Ramps, an X-Ramp on a compatible max-width configuration, or another factory loading arrangement depending on the build.

Inspect hinge pins, retaining clips, spring-assist hardware, welds, traction surfaces, support feet, locking latches, and the ramp lip where it contacts the ground. Make sure slide-in ramps fit their storage channels and are positively retained for travel. Keep grease and oil off expanded metal, cleats, and other tire-contact surfaces. Ramp springs can store substantial energy, so bent brackets, broken coils, damaged cables, or misaligned hinges should be serviced by someone familiar with that specific assembly rather than disassembled casually in the driveway.

Lights, Wiring, and the 7-Pin

Plug in the trailer and test every applicable circuit. Check left and right turn signals, brake lights, running lights, clearance and identification lights, license-plate illumination, electric-brake output, auxiliary power, and reverse lights when equipped. Perform the test in daylight so you can inspect each lens and housing, then repeat it in lower light if necessary to catch dim lamps or weak ground connections.

Most newer work trailers use sealed LED lamps rather than replaceable bulbs. A light that flickers, glows dimly, or works only when the frame is moved often points to a loose ground, corroded connector, damaged wire, or failing sealed lamp assembly. Replace cracked lenses and loose housings before storage so water cannot enter and freeze inside them. Verify that bolt-on lights, rubber grommet-mounted lights, and license-plate brackets are secure without pinching the wiring.

The 7-way plug sees dirt, moisture, and road spray all season. Disconnect it from the tow vehicle, inspect the terminals, and remove corrosion with a plastic-safe electrical contact cleaner and an appropriate small brush. Let the connector dry, then apply a light film of dielectric grease where recommended to help exclude moisture. Do not fill a badly corroded connector with grease and assume the electrical problem is repaired; damaged, loose, overheated, or green-copper terminals should be replaced.

Store the plug in a proper holder with the opening protected from rain and snow. Do not leave it dragging on the ground, hanging where water runs into it, or wrapped tightly in a plastic bag that traps condensation. Inspect the junction box near the tongue or gooseneck, making sure its cover, gasket, cable clamps, and strain reliefs are intact.

Resecure loose wiring with proper frame clips, abrasion-resistant loom, and supports suited to outdoor vehicle use. Ordinary zip ties can become brittle, cut into insulation, or leave wiring free to rub against the frame, so they should not be the only long-term repair. Check every point where wiring passes through steel, near a moving suspension component, or across a pivoting dump or tilt section. Missing grommets, bare copper, crushed loom, and wires resting on sharp edges should be corrected before storage.

Test the breakaway system and verify the breakaway battery is charged. Lippert maintenance guidance calls for brake and breakaway-system operation to be checked at every use, not only once a year. Do not pull the breakaway pin and leave it out as a parking brake; doing so can overheat the brake magnets and discharge the battery. Reinstall the pin immediately after a brief functional test and follow the battery and charger manufacturer’s test procedure.

If the trailer has a hydraulic pump battery, powered jack, wireless hydraulic controller, or other onboard accessories, inspect the terminals for corrosion and confirm the battery is fully charged. A lead-acid battery left discharged through freezing weather can be damaged. Use a compatible automatic maintainer when appropriate, or disconnect and store the battery according to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions. Charge batteries only in a properly ventilated area and reconnect everything correctly before the trailer returns to service.

Bearings and Brakes

This is one of the most commonly skipped items on a fall checklist and one of the most expensive to ignore. Lubrication requirements depend on the axle and hub design. Grease-lubricated Lippert wheel bearings are generally scheduled for cleaning, inspection, and repacking every 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Heavy use, water intrusion, severe dust, repeated short trips, high brake temperatures, or an unknown service history can justify earlier inspection.

Not every hub is grease-packed. Some heavier axle packages use oil-bath hubs that require inspection of the oil level, clear cap, seals, and lubricant condition. A current Diamond C LPX uses Lippert axles as standard, but the axle rating and lubrication system vary with the selected GVWR package. Follow the axle identification tag, trailer manual, and service information for the exact build. Never add grease to an oil-bath hub or substitute an arbitrary oil for the specified gear lubricant.

For an initial check, chock the wheels that will remain on the ground and lift the trailer only at a manufacturer-approved frame location. Use a jack and stands rated for the trailer’s actual weight, lift by the frame rather than the axle or suspension, and never work beneath a trailer supported only by a hydraulic jack. If the correct lifting point or support method is unclear, stop and consult the trailer manufacturer or a service facility.

Spin each raised wheel by hand and check for abnormal noise, roughness, excessive drag, or looseness. Hold the tire at the top and bottom and feel for play. These symptoms justify further inspection, but they do not automatically prove that the bearing alone has failed; brake adjustment, a damaged tire, a loose wheel, hub wear, seal failure, or another component may be involved.

When grease-packed hubs are serviced, remove the old lubricant, clean and inspect both bearing cones and cups, and replace any set showing pitting, spalling, corrosion, heat discoloration, or damage. Replace the grease seal whenever the hub is removed if required by the axle instructions, and use grease meeting the axle manufacturer’s specification. Do not mix incompatible grease chemistries. A grease fitting or flow-through spindle can make lubrication more convenient, but it does not eliminate the need for periodic disassembly and inspection.

Indiana requires brakes on trailers with a GVWR greater than 3,000 pounds. The law establishes when brakes are required, but the actual brake design still depends on the trailer’s axle package and factory configuration. Electric drum brakes are common on utility, cargo, dump, and equipment trailers. Some heavy-duty configurations may use electric-over-hydraulic disc brakes instead.

For electric drum brakes, inspect the drum, armature surface, shoes, magnets, springs, adjuster, wiring, and backing plate at the interval specified by the axle manufacturer. Lippert guidance calls for brake operation at every use, adjustment checks at approximately 3,000-mile intervals, magnet inspection around 6,000 miles, and a more complete annual service under normal use. High-mileage or severe-duty trailers need more frequent attention.

Keep the drum friction surface, magnet armature surface, shoes, and linings completely free of penetrating oil, grease, silicone spray, and general-purpose corrosion treatments. Oil contamination can reduce braking force and may require replacement of the brake shoes or other components. Lubricant belongs only on the specific anchor, bushing, and backing-plate contact points identified in the brake service manual, and only when the assembly has been correctly disassembled for service.

Do not blow brake dust out with compressed air or sweep it with a dry brush. Use the cleaning method and protective equipment specified by the brake manufacturer, because older brake materials may present a hazardous-dust risk. Shoes contaminated by grease or oil, magnets with exposed coils, badly scored drums, leaking seals, or damaged hardware should be replaced or professionally serviced.

Set manually adjustable brakes to the manufacturer’s specified clearance, normally allowing the wheel to turn with slight lining drag after adjustment. Automatic-adjusting brakes should still be inspected and verified. Do not deliberately back the brakes off for winter storage and do not plan to tow in spring with the adjusters loosened. Correct adjustment, dry friction surfaces, a working brake controller, and a charged breakaway system are required before the first trip.

On electric-over-hydraulic disc systems, check the actuator fluid level and condition, hoses, hard lines, fittings, rotors, pads, calipers, battery supply, breakaway function, and visible signs of leakage. Use only the brake fluid specified for the actuator. Any fluid leak, spongy response, contaminated pad, damaged hose, or corroded hydraulic component should be corrected before the trailer is returned to service.

Tires and Wheels

Check inflation with an accurate gauge when the tires are cold, meaning the trailer has been parked for at least three hours and has not just been towed. Inflate each tire to the cold pressure listed on the trailer’s certification label, tire-information placard, or owner’s manual for that configuration. The pressure molded into the tire sidewall is a limit associated with the tire’s rated load; it is not a substitute for the trailer manufacturer’s inflation specification. Never exceed the pressure limit of the tire or wheel.

Do not use a generic 50- or 65-PSI rule. Small utility trailers, tandem cargo trailers, heavy equipment trailers, and trailers equipped with 17.5-inch commercial tires can require very different pressures. Tires sharing an axle should be matched in size, construction, load capacity, and inflation unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise.

Cold weather reduces tire pressure, and tires can gradually lose air while sitting. Check them at storage time, once or twice during a long storage period when practical, and again before the first spring trip. A tire that repeatedly loses pressure may have a puncture, leaking valve stem, loose valve core, damaged bead, cracked wheel, or another problem that needs repair. Do not repeatedly add air without finding the cause.

Park on a firm, level, well-drained surface rather than bare soil, mud, or standing water. Clean wood or purpose-made pads can keep the tires and jack foot out of wet ground, but avoid oil-soaked lumber, petroleum-contaminated pavement, sharp gravel, and materials that can attack rubber. Chock the wheels securely in both directions. If you intend to support the trailer to remove weight from the tires, use only the manufacturer-approved frame points, stands, and procedure; never improvise supports under an axle tube.

Inspect the tread and both sidewalls for cuts, punctures, bulges, exposed cords, impact damage, irregular wear, weather cracking, and signs of separation. Look between closely spaced tandem tires and inspect the inward-facing sidewall, not only the side visible from outside. Uneven wear can indicate incorrect inflation, overloading, bent or misaligned running gear, worn suspension parts, or mismatched tires.

Read the DOT Tire Identification Number to determine age. The last four digits identify the week and year of manufacture. Tire age should be considered together with condition, storage environment, service history, load, speed, and the tire manufacturer’s replacement guidance. NHTSA notes that age-based recommendations vary by manufacturer, commonly falling within a six- to ten-year range, while some trailer-tire manufacturers specify a shorter interval. Once trailer tires approach five years, review the exact tire maker’s guidance and plan conservatively rather than assuming good tread makes an older tire safe.

Replace any tire that has structural damage, exposed reinforcement, a bulge, severe cracking, an unrepaired leak, or another condition that makes it unserviceable, regardless of age. A lightly used trailer tire can age before it wears its tread out because it spends long periods stationary and exposed to sunlight, heat, ozone, and weather.

Inspect the wheels for cracks, bent flanges, elongated stud holes, heavy corrosion, and damaged valve stems. Check lug-nut torque with a calibrated torque wrench using the specification for the exact wheel, stud, and axle. There is no single correct trailer lug torque. After a wheel has been removed and reinstalled, follow the manufacturer’s staged tightening pattern and required re-torque intervals.

If you have a spare, inspect its age, condition, mounting hardware, and pressure too. Spares often receive the least attention even though they may be the oldest tire on the trailer. Make sure the carrier is secure and that the wrench, socket, jack, and lifting capacity available with the tow vehicle actually fit the trailer.

Coupler, Safety Chains, and Jack

Clean and inspect the actual coupler fitted to the trailer. Depending on the build, that may be a 2-inch or 2-5/16-inch ball coupler, an adjustable channel coupler, a gooseneck ball coupler, or a pintle-eye arrangement. Check the socket or eye, latch, locking pin, adjustment hardware, mounting bolts, welds, and surrounding tongue or gooseneck structure for cracks, distortion, pitting, or excessive wear.

Lubricate the coupler only as directed by its manufacturer. The ball-contact surface generally benefits from suitable hitch grease, while latch mechanisms may require a lighter lubricant in specific locations. Work the latch through its full range and confirm it closes, locks, and releases without binding. Keep grease away from electrical connectors, brake components, walking surfaces, and anything that could collect abrasive dirt.

On an adjustable-height coupler, inspect the channel, bolts, nuts, and bolt holes for movement or elongation. On a gooseneck, check the locking handle, pin, set screws, height-adjustment hardware, safety-chain anchors, and any exposed inner tube. Do not change the coupler height without restoring the exact fastener arrangement and torque specified for that assembly.

Inspect the entire length of both safety chains or cables, including attachment points, welds, links, hooks, latches, and retainers. Replace components that are cracked, stretched, twisted, deeply gouged, heat-damaged, heavily corroded, improperly repaired, or unable to attach securely to the tow vehicle. Do not rely on an arbitrary percentage of visible wear or attempt an unapproved welded chain repair. The replacement assembly must have capacity appropriate for the trailer and be attached using the manufacturer’s approved method.

The tongue or landing jack takes abuse all season, but maintenance depends on the jack type. For a manual screw jack, clean exposed surfaces and lubricate the screw, gears, pivot, or grease fittings as the manual directs. For an electric or hydraulic jack, inspect wiring, switches, hoses, seals, mounting bolts, and battery connections. Do not force a jack beyond its travel or continue operating one that slips, binds, leaks, or makes abnormal noise.

Cycle the jack through a reasonable portion of its travel while the trailer is safely supported and unloaded. If it is a swivel jack, inspect the pivot bracket and confirm the pull pin engages fully. If it has a drop leg, inspect the retaining pin and holes. When parked, use a solid, adequately sized pad under the jack foot and keep exposed inner-tube length as short as practical while maintaining the required trailer position. The jack stabilizes the tongue; the wheel chocks are what keep the trailer from rolling.

Drain Everything That Holds Water

This matters most on enclosed trailers, dump trailers, and equipment that has collected wet debris. Remove floor mats, cargo, cardboard, wood scraps, feed, and anything else that can hold moisture or attract rodents. Open the rear and side doors during the drying process and allow the walls, floor, corners, and door seals to dry before closing and locking the trailer.

Roof vents vary by manufacturer and option. Some can remain partially open only when protected by a weatherproof vent cover, while others should be closed for outside storage. Inspect the lid, screen, garnish, sealant, and roof opening, then position the vent according to its manual so the trailer has appropriate ventilation without admitting rain or snow. Do not assume every Wells Cargo, Legend, Darkhorse, or other enclosed trailer uses the same vent design.

Check factory drain holes, door-track drains, stake pockets, battery boxes, toolboxes, and other designed drainage paths. Clear them without enlarging the openings or drilling into structural frame members. Water trapped with corrosive debris can promote rust, damage wood, and freeze inside nonsealed compartments, but adding holes to an engineered frame can weaken it or expose untreated steel.

Park the trailer on a stable, well-drained surface in the orientation recommended for that body style. A slight drainage slope may help an open deck shed water, but do not create an extreme nose-high or nose-low angle that overloads the jack, allows an enclosed-trailer roof to pond water, or makes the trailer unstable. Keep dump bodies and tilt decks in their normal lowered travel position unless the manufacturer specifically instructs otherwise.

On a dump trailer such as a Diamond C LPT, DOD, or MDT, empty and clean the body thoroughly, especially after hauling fertilizer, manure, salt, concrete debris, or wet soil. Lower the bed fully so the hydraulic cylinder is retracted and protected. Never store a dump body raised on hydraulic pressure, and never work beneath it without the factory safety prop correctly engaged. Inspect hoses, fittings, reservoir, cylinder, pump compartment, remote, and battery for leaks or damage.

On a hydraulically dampened tilt trailer such as a Diamond C HDT, return the deck to its secured transport position, inspect the latch and dampening components, and remove mud from the pivot area. Do not lubricate a hydraulic or dampening component with a product that is not approved for it.

Remove winch straps, axle straps, ratchet straps, chains, binders, tarps, and soft tie-downs unless they are stored in a dry, protected compartment designed for them. Clean and dry textile webbing away from direct heat, then store it indoors away from sunlight, chemicals, sharp edges, and rodents. Inspect for cuts, melted fibers, broken stitching, chemical staining, and damaged hooks. Lubricate ratchet and binder mechanisms sparingly without contaminating the load-bearing webbing.

Cover Selection and How to Use It Right

A trailer cover can make sense for an enclosed cargo trailer, specialty trailer, or newer flatbed you want to protect from ultraviolet exposure, bird droppings, tree sap, and airborne dirt. Covered indoor or roofed storage with good airflow is generally better than wrapping the trailer outdoors, but a properly selected cover can still reduce weather exposure.

A basic polyethylene tarp pulled tightly over the trailer often creates more problems than it solves. It can trap condensation, rub through paint or powder coating, collect water in low spots, tear loose in wind, and damage lights, vents, fenders, or sharp corners. A tarp also becomes hazardous when cords or straps are attached to brake wiring, hydraulic lines, suspension parts, ramp springs, or other components that were not designed as tie-down points.

If you’re going to cover the trailer, use a purpose-built, breathable, water-resistant outdoor cover sized for the trailer’s body and accessories. Pad sharp corners as the cover manufacturer recommends, secure the cover with its designed straps, and make sure it cannot flap continuously against the finish. Leave the lower area ventilated rather than sealing moisture inside. Never install a cover over a wet deck, damp enclosed interior, warm battery charger, or leaking hydraulic system.

Check the cover periodically after high winds, heavy rain, ice, or snow. Remove water pockets before they stretch the fabric or load the roof. Do not allow snow or ice to accumulate beyond the roof or cover manufacturer’s limits, and never climb onto a wet or icy trailer roof to clear it without proper equipment and fall protection.

For open utility and equipment trailers, a full cover is often more trouble than it is worth. A roofed, ventilated location on a firm surface is usually the better option. Park away from dead limbs and areas where sap, leaves, or standing water collect. Opaque tire covers can reduce direct UV exposure when the trailer must sit outside, but they should be fitted without trapping water around the wheels.

One More Thing Before You Walk Away

Park the unloaded trailer on a firm, level, well-drained surface. Chock the wheels in both directions, support the jack on a solid pad, close and secure doors and ramps, install a coupler or gooseneck lock where appropriate, and remove the keys or wireless controls. Do not depend on the breakaway system, tow chains, or hydraulic pressure to hold the trailer in place.

Take five minutes to record anything you found during the walkthrough that you did not repair. Photograph the damaged part, note the trailer VIN and axle information, and save the list in your phone, maintenance log, or tow vehicle. A weather-resistant tag can also be placed on the jack or another visible nonmoving area, but do not stick notes inside the coupler, over a warning label, or where they can interfere with a latch. You may not remember a marginal tire, cracked ramp weld, weak battery, or damaged running light several months later.

Storage maintenance does not replace a spring pre-trip inspection. Before the first haul, uncover the trailer, remove all chocks and locks, verify tire pressure and lug torque, reconnect and test batteries, inspect for animal damage, test every light and brake circuit, confirm the breakaway system works, check the coupler and chains, and make a low-speed brake test in a clear area. Any trailer that has developed a fluid leak, seized wheel, structural crack, or electrical fault should be repaired before it is loaded.
