Electric Trucks and Their Effect on Trailer Choices

You finally pulled the trigger on an electric pickup, or you’re seriously considering one. Now the question keeps coming up: can it haul a trailer without turning a two-hour drive into a five-hour charging exercise? The answer is yes, provided the truck, trailer, load, hitch, route, and charging plan are matched correctly. Electric pickups can be strong tow vehicles, but their published maximum tow ratings do not tell the whole story. Payload, tongue weight, trailer aerodynamics, battery size, highway speed, weather, and charger layout matter just as much as the number printed in the brochure.

What EV Pickups Actually Offer on Paper

Three of the most common comparison points are the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Chevrolet Silverado EV, and the Tesla Cybertruck. The current-generation F-150 Lightning, produced through the 2025 model year, offers conventional trailer ratings ranging from about 5,000 to 10,000 lbs depending on battery, trim, equipment, and the Max Trailer Tow Package. Ford has concluded production of that generation, but Lightnings already on the road or available in remaining inventory continue to be relevant tow vehicles. The 2026 Silverado EV reaches a maximum conventional trailer rating of 12,500 lbs in selected configurations, although several other battery-and-trim combinations carry lower ratings. The Cybertruck is rated for 7,500 lbs in Long Range form and up to 11,000 lbs in Premium All-Wheel Drive and Cyberbeast configurations.

Those figures overlap with the towing capability of many gas-powered half-ton pickups, but they do not mean every trailer below the advertised maximum is automatically a suitable match. A Diamond C or H&H utility trailer carrying mowers, ATVs, building materials, or compact equipment may fit comfortably within the limits of a properly configured electric pickup. A skid steer, compact tractor, large attachment, or heavily optioned equipment trailer may not. The only reliable method is to add the trailer’s actual empty weight, every attachment, fuel, tools, chains, spare tire, and cargo, then compare the resulting loaded trailer weight with the truck’s specific conventional tow rating, GCWR, payload rating, rear-axle rating, hitch rating, and maximum allowable tongue weight.

Payload is often the first limit owners reach. Payload includes passengers, cargo in the cab and bed, aftermarket accessories, the hitch, and the trailer’s tongue weight. Electric pickups have substantial curb weights, partly because of their battery packs, and the manufacturer has already accounted for that curb weight when calculating payload. On the 2025 F-150 Lightning, Ford published maximum payload figures of approximately 2,329 lbs with the 98-kWh Standard Range battery, 2,246 lbs with the 123-kWh battery, and 1,879 lbs with the 131-kWh Extended Range battery. Those are maximum configuration figures, not a promise for every truck. Trim equipment, running boards, tonneau covers, tools, and other options can reduce the number considerably, so the Tire and Loading Information label on the driver’s door jamb is the number that matters.

The conventional receiver-hitch ratings published for these electric pickups should not be treated as gooseneck or fifth-wheel ratings. Tongue weight on a bumper-pull trailer is commonly around 10 to 15 percent of actual loaded trailer weight, subject to the truck and trailer manufacturers’ instructions. Ford generally uses approximately 10 percent in its Lightning towing guidance, Chevrolet commonly specifies a 10-to-15-percent range for conventional trailers, and Tesla lists maximum tongue weights of 750 lbs for the 7,500-lb Cybertruck configuration and 1,100 lbs for the 11,000-lb configurations. A 10,000-lb conventional trailer can therefore place roughly 1,000 to 1,500 lbs on the hitch before passengers, tools, and bed cargo are counted. That can consume most of an electric pickup’s available payload even when the trailer remains below the advertised towing maximum.

The Range Problem Is Real, and It’s Bigger Than You Think

EPA range estimates are measured under standardized conditions without a work trailer attached. Once a trailer is connected, energy use can increase dramatically. Independent towing tests commonly show range reductions of roughly 35 to 60 percent, with some tall, wide, or fast-moving combinations performing even worse. The trailer’s frontal area, shape, tire pressure, exposed equipment, road speed, headwind, elevation change, pavement, outside temperature, and total weight all affect the result. At highway speed, aerodynamic drag can matter as much as, and sometimes more than, a few hundred pounds of additional cargo.

The 2026 Silverado EV illustrates why battery configuration must be considered alongside tow rating. Depending on trim and battery, its published unloaded range spans roughly the high-200-mile range to nearly 500 miles. A Silverado EV that can travel more than 400 miles without a trailer should not automatically be expected to cover 400 miles while towing. With an enclosed cargo trailer or equipment load at interstate speed, a practical interval between charging stops may be closer to roughly 140 to 250 miles, depending heavily on the specific battery, trailer, speed, weather, and desired reserve. The same principle applies to a Lightning or Cybertruck: the dashboard’s unloaded range figure is not the number to use when scheduling a tow trip.

That changes trip planning fundamentally. A gas truck pulling a Wells Cargo or Darkhorse Cargo enclosed trailer across Indiana can refuel in a few minutes at almost any suitable station. An EV needs a route plan that considers charger compatibility, charging speed, station reliability, stall geometry, and the distance to a backup site. A charger may appear conveniently located along I-69, US-231, or another Indiana route but still be difficult to use with a trailer if every stall requires the truck to back toward the charger. Unhitching can add time and create a safety problem when the available parking area is small, busy, or poorly lit.

The usable distance between stops is also less than a simple full-range number suggests. Most drivers do not arrive at a charger with zero percent remaining, and charging usually slows as the battery approaches a high state of charge. A towing plan might involve leaving with 90 or 100 percent, arriving with a 10-to-20-percent reserve, and charging only to the level needed for the next leg. A session can take approximately 20 to 50 minutes or longer depending on the truck, charger output, battery temperature, starting state of charge, congestion, and whether the station delivers its advertised power.

The practical takeaway is that electric towing is easiest on local and regional routes, especially when the truck returns to a home or shop charger each night. A fixed 100- or 150-mile one-way rule is too simplistic because a large-battery Silverado EV with a low open trailer can travel much farther than a smaller-battery truck pulling a tall enclosed box into a headwind. Long-distance towing is possible, but it requires more scheduling flexibility and more attention to charging locations than the same trip in a gas or diesel truck. Tight-deadline deliveries, repeated heavy loads, and routes through areas with limited trailer-accessible charging may still favor a conventional tow vehicle.

Trailer Selection Changes When You’re Driving Electric

Because energy use and charging access become major constraints, trailer shape, empty weight, loaded balance, and tire condition deserve more attention. The goal is not simply to buy the lightest trailer available. The trailer must still have enough GVWR, axle capacity, frame strength, deck space, brakes, tie-down capacity, tires, and structural reserve for the intended load. The better strategy is to avoid unnecessary weight and frontal area while selecting a trailer that safely carries the cargo.

  • Trailer height and width. An open utility trailer generally presents less frontal area than a full-height enclosed trailer and may stay partly within the truck’s aerodynamic wake. A tall Wells Cargo or Darkhorse Cargo enclosed trailer extends above and outside the cab, increasing drag substantially at highway speed. A rounded nose can help airflow, but it does not eliminate the large frontal area of the box. Cargo on an open trailer can also create considerable drag, particularly when buckets, ramps, upright equipment, loose tarps, or wide attachments face the airflow.
  • Steel vs. aluminum construction. An all-aluminum trailer, including suitable models from Legend, can provide meaningful empty-weight savings and corrosion resistance compared with some similarly sized steel trailers. The difference is not a universal 500 or 1,000 lbs, however. Floor material, frame design, wall height, ramp doors, cabinets, spare tires, upgraded axles, and other options can narrow or even reverse the expected gap. Compare the actual empty weight and carrying capacity of the individual trailer rather than relying on the material alone. At highway speed, a low steel utility trailer may use less energy than a lighter but much taller aluminum enclosed trailer.
  • Load weight vs. GVWR. GVWR is the trailer’s maximum permitted loaded weight, not a suggested everyday target and not a replacement for the truck’s tow rating. Trailer payload is calculated by subtracting the trailer’s actual empty weight from its GVWR. Never choose an undersized trailer merely to obtain a lower rating, and never assume that buying a higher-GVWR trailer permits the truck to tow more. The loaded combination must stay within the trailer GVWR, axle and tire ratings, truck tow rating, truck GVWR, rear GAWR, GCWR, hitch rating, and payload limit simultaneously.
  • Tongue weight discipline. Measure tongue weight after the trailer is loaded in its normal travel configuration. Too little can contribute to sway; too much can overload the truck’s payload, receiver, rear axle, or tires. A tongue-weight scale or a properly conducted platform-scale measurement removes the guesswork. Remember that moving a machine only a few inches forward or backward can materially change tongue weight. The truck’s automatic leveling or air suspension may make the rig look level, but it does not reduce tongue weight or increase any published rating.

These mileage bands are planning estimates based on the trucks’ published unloaded ranges and the reductions commonly observed in real-world towing. They are not manufacturer ratings or guaranteed travel distances. A low open trailer carrying a compact load may outperform the estimate, while a tall enclosed trailer, strong headwind, high speed, steep terrain, or freezing weather may reduce it. Cold conditions affect both battery efficiency and cabin-heating demand, but there is no single percentage that applies to every trip. Preconditioning the battery while connected to shore power, starting with a warm battery, reducing speed, and maintaining adequate tire pressure can improve the result without changing the truck’s legal ratings.

What This Means If You’re Buying a Trailer Now

If you already own an electric pickup or plan to buy one, choose the trailer by working backward from the real cargo. List the heaviest machine, attachment, material, tool, spare tire, and accessory that will travel on the trailer. Then select enough trailer capacity without adding dimensions or equipment you will never use. A Diamond C GTU is a current premium tandem-axle bumper-pull utility trailer with a 7,000-lb GVWR, two 3,500-lb axles, electric brakes, and a 4-inch channel frame. It can be a practical match for an EV pickup carrying mowers, side-by-sides, landscaping equipment, or similar loads, provided the trailer’s actual loaded weight and tongue weight remain within every truck and trailer rating. Its 7,000-lb GVWR does not mean it can carry 7,000 lbs of cargo; the trailer’s own empty weight must be subtracted first.

For enclosed cargo, a properly configured Legend all-aluminum trailer deserves consideration when lower empty weight and corrosion resistance are priorities. A steel H&H, Wells Cargo, or Darkhorse Cargo trailer may still be the better choice when its dimensions, structure, doors, payload, price, and service support fit the job more closely. Open utility trailers from Delco, Liberty, Diamond C, H&H, and other manufacturers generally expose less frontal area than full-height enclosed boxes, but the actual cargo arrangement still determines how cleanly air passes over the combination. Compare each trailer’s listed empty weight, GVWR, deck or box dimensions, axle ratings, tire ratings, brake equipment, and actual scale weight rather than making a decision from brand or construction material alone.

Indiana braking requirements also belong in the buying decision. For practical trailer selection, any trailer rated above 3,000 lbs should be treated as a braked trailer. Indiana law requires adequate brakes on a trailer or semitrailer with a gross weight of at least 3,000 lbs, along with driver control and an automatic breakaway function. Confirm that the EV pickup has a compatible brake controller, that every required wheel brake operates correctly, and that the breakaway battery and switch are tested before travel. Regenerative braking in the truck does not replace the trailer’s required service brakes.

If your work regularly demands actual 10,000-lb loads over long distances, study the numbers carefully before making an electric pickup your only tow vehicle. The loaded trailer may be near the maximum conventional rating while its tongue weight consumes most of the available payload. Diamond C heavy-duty equipment and dump lines such as the LPX, HDT, and LPT begin around 14,900 or 15,500 lbs GVWR and can extend well beyond that range. Those trailers are intended for appropriately rated heavier tow vehicles, not the current Lightning, Silverado EV, or Cybertruck merely because the trailer happens to be empty during one trip. Many businesses can use an EV for commuting, estimates, local deliveries, and lighter trailer work while retaining a properly equipped gas or diesel truck for the heaviest or longest hauls.

Commercial operators must also consider licensing and registration. A Class A CDL is generally triggered when a combination is operated under CDL rules with a GCWR or actual combination weight of at least 26,001 lbs and the towed unit has a GVWR or actual weight greater than 10,000 lbs. The 26,001-lb threshold applies to the combination, not to the trailer by itself. Agricultural, private, and other exemptions can depend on the operation, so verify the rules that apply to the specific use. In Indiana, a newly acquired trailer should be titled and registered within the state’s 45-day penalty-free window rather than being operated indefinitely on purchase paperwork.

Charging Infrastructure: Plan Before You Hook Up

Before the first tow trip, enter the route in the truck’s built-in navigation and compare it with recent station information in PlugShare or the charging-network application. Look for pull-through stalls, curbside chargers, or parking areas where the combination can approach without blocking traffic or occupying several charging spaces. Tesla identifies trailer-friendly Supercharger locations in its navigation system, and the Cybertruck uses the North American Charging Standard connector natively. Compatible F-150 Lightnings and Silverado EVs can use designated Tesla Superchargers with the correct manufacturer-approved NACS adapter, in addition to compatible CCS stations. Access to a network does not guarantee that every site, charger generation, cable position, or parking layout will work with every truck-and-trailer combination.

Check recent user reports, charger power, operating status, nearby parking, and a backup site before departure. Leave enough battery reserve to reach the alternate charger if the first location is full or out of service. At a back-in station, unhitch only in a safe designated area, chock the trailer wheels, secure the coupler, and keep the trailer clear of traffic. Do not stretch a charging cable across a driving lane or block multiple stalls when another safe option is available. Destination charging at a jobsite, campground, hotel, or customer’s property can be valuable, but ordinary 120-volt service adds energy very slowly to a large electric-truck battery. Verify the outlet, circuit, connector, charging rate, and permission to use it before depending on it.

Electric pickups are genuinely capable tow vehicles when the trailer and route fit the truck. The limitations are real, but they are manageable when they are measured rather than guessed. Start with the door-jamb payload label and the exact configuration-specific towing guide, not the largest number shown in an advertisement. Choose enough trailer capacity for the load, minimize unnecessary frontal area and empty weight, measure tongue weight, maintain the tires and brakes, reduce speed when conditions demand it, and plan charging stops with a reserve and a backup. With those steps, an F-150 Lightning, Silverado EV, or Cybertruck can handle many of the utility, landscaping, construction-support, farm-supply, recreational, and weekend-hauling jobs encountered around Owen County.
