Pull into a truck stop anywhere along I-70 and you may eventually spot a trailer on the shoulder with a smoking hub, a damaged spindle, or a wheel leaning at an angle that it was never designed to hold. In severe cases, a dragging brake can make the drum extremely hot, while a bearing that has lost lubrication can overheat, score the spindle, damage the hub, or allow the wheel-end assembly to come apart. Once a seal fails or a bearing begins shedding metal, the situation can deteriorate quickly. A hub that seemed normal during the morning walk-around may become a roadside failure later in the same trip.
Repacking grease-lubricated wheel bearings is still one of the least expensive forms of trailer maintenance, but the job should not be treated as nothing more than pumping in a little grease. A proper service includes removing the hub, cleaning and inspecting the bearing cones and cups, checking the spindle and seal surface, installing a serviceable seal, adjusting the bearings correctly, inspecting the brakes when equipped, and torquing the wheel fasteners to the correct specification. That takes more time than a quick grease-gun visit, but it is far less expensive than replacing a hub, brake assembly, spindle, axle, tire, and wheel after a failure.
How Often Should You Repack?
There is no single mileage interval that applies to every trailer axle and every wheel-end system. For many conventional grease-packed trailer hubs, the long-established service interval is every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Dexter continues to publish that interval for many of its standard grease-packed wheel ends. Lippert’s traditional grease-packed axle documentation also calls for replacing the grease at 12 months or 12,000 miles. However, Lippert’s current guidance for its flow-through Super Lube system uses a longer mileage figure of approximately 36,000 miles while retaining the 12-month limit. Because most privately owned trailers do not travel 36,000 miles in a year, annual inspection remains the controlling interval in many real-world applications.
Usage can shorten that schedule substantially. A boat trailer that is repeatedly submerged, especially in salt water, should be inspected before the season and monitored throughout the season for contaminated grease, damaged caps, leaking seals, and rough bearings. Rapidly cooling a warm hub in water can create a pressure change that encourages water to move past a compromised seal. Water contamination does not always cause an immediate failure, but it can promote corrosion, pitting, and grease deterioration that become evident the next time the trailer is used. Long-term storage is not maintenance-free either. Grease can separate or oxidize over time, condensation can collect inside the hub, and seal lips or spindle sealing surfaces can deteriorate while the trailer sits.
Heavy equipment trailers require an additional distinction: not every heavy axle is grease-packed. Current Diamond C premium trailers use Lippert axles as standard. Many 7,000 lb. Lippert axle packages use Super Lube grease-lubricated hubs, while current 8,000 lb. and 10,000 lb. packages on models such as the LPT, LPX, HDT, and FMAX commonly use oil-bath wheel ends. An oil-bath hub is serviced by checking the specified gear oil, oil level, cap, gasket, and seals; it is not repacked with wheel-bearing grease. Before setting any maintenance interval, identify the axle manufacturer, axle serial number, hub type, and lubrication system actually installed on the trailer. Severe commercial service, frequent maximum-GVWR loading, water exposure, dusty job sites, long downhill braking, and extended highway operation can all justify inspections sooner than the published maximum interval.
Signs the Bearings Need Attention Now
Do not wait for the annual service date if the trailer develops a wheel-end symptom. Bearing, brake, tire, and hub problems often overlap, so the goal is to stop using the trailer and determine the cause rather than assume that adding grease will fix it.
- Growling, grinding, rumbling, or humming from one wheel that rises or changes with road speed deserves immediate investigation. A damaged bearing can make those sounds, but cupped tires, loose wheel fasteners, dragging brakes, and debris contacting the drum or rotor can produce similar symptoms.
- One hub running substantially hotter than the others is a warning. Some warmth is normal after highway driving or brake use, and brake-equipped hubs can be warmer than idler hubs. Compare wheel ends under the same operating conditions with an infrared thermometer rather than placing a bare hand on a potentially hot drum. A large side-to-side temperature difference can indicate inadequate lubrication, excessive bearing preload, a dragging brake, a failing bearing, or another wheel-end problem.
- Excessive looseness at the wheel can indicate improper bearing adjustment, bearing wear, a damaged spindle, loose wheel nuts, or wear elsewhere in the running gear. With the trailer correctly supported, rock the tire at both the 12-and-6 and 9-and-3 positions while watching the hub in relation to the spindle. Tapered roller bearings normally require a small amount of end play, so slight measurable movement is not automatically a failure. Obvious clunking, visible hub movement, rough rotation, or play beyond the axle manufacturer’s specification requires correction.
- Grease on the brake side of the hub, backing plate, drum, rotor, or inside of the wheel can indicate a damaged rear seal, a worn spindle seal surface, incompatible parts, excessive hub pressure, or grease being pumped too quickly through a spindle-lube system. Grease-contaminated brake linings can drastically reduce braking performance and usually require replacement rather than simply being wiped clean.
- Milky, watery, separated, gritty, metallic, or burnt-smelling lubricant indicates contamination or overheating. Grease color alone is not a reliable test because new grease may be red, blue, green, amber, tan, or another color depending on the manufacturer and dye. Look for moisture, rust, hard particles, metal flakes, a scorched odor, and changes in texture rather than judging the grease by color alone.
Any of those symptoms is a reason to stop towing until the wheel end has been inspected. Adding grease may temporarily quiet a dry bearing, but it cannot repair pitted rollers, a damaged cup, a grooved spindle, a leaking seal, contaminated brake shoes, or an incorrectly adjusted bearing. Treat heat, noise, looseness, and lubricant leakage as diagnostic clues, not as invitations to keep driving to see whether the problem gets worse.
What Grease to Use
This is where otherwise careful trailer owners make expensive mistakes. Grease is a combination of base oil, thickener, and additives. Two products can both be labeled NLGI No. 2 and still use incompatible thickener systems or have very different base-oil viscosity, dropping point, water resistance, and load-carrying performance. Mixing incompatible greases can cause the resulting mixture to soften, harden, separate, leak, or lose the consistency needed to remain in the bearing under heat.
For grease-lubricated Lippert trailer wheel ends, the published specification calls for an NLGI No. 2 lithium-complex grease with a minimum dropping point of 230°C or 446°F, extreme-pressure additives, corrosion and oxidation inhibitors, and a suitable petroleum base-oil viscosity. An NLGI GC-LB designation is useful because the GC portion indicates testing for automotive wheel-bearing service, but the certification mark does not replace the axle manufacturer’s exact lubricant specification. When servicing another axle brand, use that manufacturer’s manual and axle serial number rather than assuming that every high-temperature grease is interchangeable.
Instead of buying solely by brand name or grease color, check these three things:
- For current Diamond C grease-lubricated Lippert axles, select a lithium-complex NLGI No. 2 wheel-bearing grease that meets Lippert’s temperature, viscosity, corrosion-protection, oxidation-protection, and extreme-pressure requirements. Confirm the current recommendation against the service information for the axle serial number.
- For boat and marine trailers, use a wheel-bearing grease approved by the axle or hub manufacturer with strong water-washout and corrosion resistance. A product being advertised as “marine grease” is not enough by itself; it still needs the correct consistency, thickener compatibility, and wheel-bearing performance.
- For an unknown grease already in the hub, do not top it off with a different product and hope the two are compatible. Remove the hub, clean the bearings, cups, spindle, and hub cavity thoroughly, inspect the parts, and refill the wheel end with one known compatible grease.
Do not select a chassis-only grease simply because it is marketed as heavy duty, and do not assume that a moly, polyurea, calcium-complex, calcium-sulfonate, sodium-complex, or lithium-complex product can be mixed with whatever is already present. When changing thickener chemistry, remove all of the old lubricant first. Also keep the grease gun dedicated to one clearly labeled product. Cross-contamination often happens because the same shop gun is used for wheel bearings, loader pins, suspension bushings, and other components that require different lubricants.
The Repack Process
You do not need a vehicle lift to service many conventional trailer hubs, but you do need a level, hard work surface, properly rated lifting equipment, wheel chocks, eye protection, a torque wrench, clean tools, and the correct axle documentation. The following sequence describes a typical grease-packed tapered-roller-bearing hub. Retainers, nut-adjustment procedures, brake designs, oil seals, and torque specifications vary, so the axle manual and trailer manufacturer’s lifting instructions always take priority.
- Park on firm, level ground. Secure the tow vehicle, apply the parking brake, chock the wheels that will remain on the ground, and prevent the trailer from rolling or pivoting. Slightly loosen the wheel nuts before lifting, but do not remove them.
- Raise the trailer at a manufacturer-approved lifting point and support the frame with jack stands rated for the load. Do not depend on a hydraulic jack by itself, and do not place a stand under a thin axle tube unless the trailer or axle manufacturer specifically identifies that location as an approved support point.
- Remove the wheel and identify the wheel end before opening it. A press-fit dust cap, rubber-plug Super Lube cap, threaded oil cap, Bearing Buddy protector, and sealed cartridge hub are not serviced in the same way. If the hub has a clear oil cap, stop and follow the oil-bath procedure instead of packing it with grease.
- Remove the dust or grease cap without distorting its sealing surface. Depending on the spindle design, remove the cotter pin, castle nut, tang washer, locking retainer, washer, or other hardware in the correct order. Do not reuse a damaged cotter pin or compromised locking device.
- Support the hub or hub-and-drum assembly as it comes off the spindle. The outer bearing may become loose as the hub is removed. The inner bearing is normally retained by the rear seal. Avoid dragging the seal across spindle threads or dropping the hub, bearing, or drum onto a dirty floor.
- Remove the seal with a seal puller and take out the inner bearing. Clean the bearing cones and cups with an appropriate solvent, then dry them with a clean, lint-free cloth. Do not spin a dry bearing with compressed air; high-speed spinning without lubrication can damage the bearing and can turn the bearing into a projectile.
- Inspect every roller and cage, both bearing cups, the spindle journals, spindle threads, washer, nut, hub bore, cap fit, and seal surface. Replace any cone and matching cup that shows pitting, spalling, corrosion, scoring, brinelling, blue or black heat discoloration, cracks, flaking, cage damage, or rough operation. A cone and cup operate as a matched bearing set and should be replaced together.
- If a cup must be replaced, drive it out evenly with the correct press tooling or a suitable brass drift, then install the new cup squarely against the hub shoulder. A cocked or incompletely seated cup will alter bearing adjustment and can quickly damage the new bearing. This is precision work; send the hub to a qualified shop when the correct tools or experience are not available.
- Pack each bearing until new grease is visibly forced through the spaces between every roller and the cage. A bearing packer is clean and consistent, but hand packing is acceptable when done correctly. Smearing grease only on the exposed rollers does not fill the bearing. Apply the amount of grease to the cup surfaces, spindle, and hub cavity specified for that wheel-end design; do not automatically stuff every standard hub completely full unless the system is designed for full-cavity lubrication.
- Install a correct new seal whenever the hub has been removed and the old seal has been disturbed. Confirm the seal’s inside diameter, outside diameter, lip direction, and compatibility with the spindle sealing surface. Install it squarely with a seal driver or flat block, and lubricate the seal lip when required by the axle instructions. Do not substitute a seal based only on axle capacity.
- Reinstall and adjust the hub using the procedure for the exact spindle and retainer. On many Lippert grease-packed 3,500 through 7,000 lb. wheel ends using a castle nut, the published procedure is to rotate the hub while tightening the nut to 50 ft-lb to seat the bearings, loosen the nut to remove that torque, tighten it finger-snug, and then back it off only enough to align the cotter-pin hole. The final setting must not leave the tapered bearings clamped with running preload. Install the wheel, torque the fasteners in stages and in the correct pattern, then follow the trailer manufacturer’s specified re-torque schedule after the wheel has been removed.
A clean inspection and repack may take 45 to 90 minutes per hub for an experienced technician. A tandem-axle trailer has four hubs, and the work can occupy several hours once brake inspection, cleaning, seal replacement, bearing adjustment, wheel installation, and final torque checks are included. Corroded parts, damaged cups, leaking seals, contaminated brake assemblies, or spindle repairs can extend the job considerably. Maintenance quality matters more than finishing the whole trailer inside an arbitrary two-hour estimate.
Bearing Buddy and Super Lube Hubs
Bearing Buddy is a spring-loaded wheel-bearing protector that replaces the normal dust cap on a compatible grease-filled hub. Grease is added through a fitting in the face of the protector until the movable piston extends to the specified position. The spring maintains approximately 3 PSI of pressure in a correctly filled hub, and the protector includes a relief feature for excess pressure. That slight positive pressure is intended to reduce the tendency of water to enter when a warm boat-trailer hub is submerged and rapidly cooled.
The protector must be sized to the actual hub bore, and the hub, bearings, seal, spindle sealing surface, and grease should be inspected before installation. The manufacturer’s installation method calls for the hub cavity to be filled with a compatible NLGI No. 2 lubricant rather than leaving large air pockets. On a brake-equipped trailer, seal condition is especially important because excessive pressure or a damaged rear seal can move grease into the drum or rotor area. A Bearing Buddy is not intended for an oil-bath hub.
A grease fitting does not allow you to see the rollers, cups, cage, spindle, seal surface, or brake linings. For that reason, convenient lubrication should not be confused with a complete mechanical inspection. A hub can contain plenty of grease and still have a pitted bearing, loose adjustment, worn spindle, failing seal, cracked drum, or contaminated brake assembly. Continue to follow the axle, hub, brake, and trailer manufacturer’s inspection schedule even when a bearing protector is installed.
Lippert’s Super Lube system operates differently. The grease fitting is located at the end of a drilled spindle, allowing new grease to travel to the inner bearing and then move outward through the hub and outer bearing. Lippert’s procedure is to raise the wheel safely, remove the rubber cap plug, fully engage the grease-gun coupler, pump the correct grease slowly while rotating the hub, and continue until fresh grease begins to emerge at the outer bearing. Pumping too quickly can create enough pressure to damage the seal and contaminate the brakes. If the hub has been separated from the axle, Lippert requires the seal to be replaced before lubricating the assembled wheel end. Current Diamond C 7,000 lb. Lippert packages commonly use this grease-lubricated system, while many current 8,000 lb. and 10,000 lb. packages use oil-bath hubs that require an entirely different service procedure.
Axle and Hub Specifics
Axle capacity alone is not enough information to order a bearing kit. Two axles carrying the same nominal rating may have different spindle profiles, bearing combinations, seals, hub bores, wheel-bolt patterns, brakes, and lubrication systems. Current Diamond C premium lines, including FMAX, HDT, LPT, LPX, WDT, and DEC configurations, use Lippert axles as standard. Other trailer brands and older used trailers may have a different supplier or a replacement axle installed later in their lives. Always begin with the axle identification tag and serial number.

Bearing numbers such as L44649, L68149, 25580, 15123, and 14125A are standardized bearing designations, but seeing one familiar number does not prove that every other component in a kit is correct. Read the markings from both bearing cones and cups, measure the seal when necessary, and verify the parts through the axle serial number. Buying by trailer GVWR or lug count alone can produce a kit with the wrong outer bearing, cup, seal, or retainer. Parts prices also vary widely by axle size, bearing manufacturer, seal design, brake type, and whether the kit includes cups, hardware, caps, and oil-bath components. The right parts cost less than installing an almost-correct kit and damaging the hub or spindle.
A Quick Aside: When to Just Replace
Q: Can I reuse old bearings if they look okay?
A: A properly cleaned bearing cone and matching cup may be reused when every roller and raceway is smooth, the cage is intact, there is no corrosion, pitting, spalling, scoring, heat discoloration, or abnormal wear, and the bearing turns smoothly after lubrication. There is no responsible rule that says every bearing must be discarded automatically at five years or 50,000 miles. A well-maintained older bearing may remain serviceable, while a nearly new bearing exposed to water or run with the wrong adjustment may already be damaged. When condition is uncertain, replacement is the safer choice, especially because the hub is already disassembled. Replace the cone and cup together, and replace the disturbed seal before reassembly.
The cup in the hub is just as important as the removable cone. Installing a new cone against a pitted, scored, or heat-damaged cup will damage the new bearing and can create an incorrect contact pattern. Likewise, a new bearing set will not correct a grooved spindle, worn seal journal, damaged hub bore, bent spindle, loose wheel studs, or improperly seated cup. Inspect the entire wheel end rather than focusing on the loose bearing in your hand.
Where to Start
If you bought a used trailer and do not have a documented wheel-end service history, treat the maintenance status as unknown. Before putting the trailer into regular service, identify whether the hubs are grease-packed, Super Lube, another spindle-lube design, oil-bath, or a sealed assembly. Then perform the appropriate inspection. The calendar age of the trailer does not tell you whether the bearings were adjusted correctly, whether the hubs were submerged, whether incompatible grease was mixed, or whether a previous owner pumped grease past the rear seals.
If you are shopping for a new trailer, ask the dealer for the axle manufacturer, axle rating, lubrication system, service interval, grease or oil specification, brake type, and method for obtaining replacement parts by serial number. Diamond C trailers are built in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, and current premium Diamond C models use Lippert axles as standard. On many current 7,000 lb. packages you will see Lippert Super Lube grease hubs, while 8,000 lb. and 10,000 lb. packages commonly use oil-bath hubs. H&H specifications can vary by model, year, axle package, and available components, so verify the identification tag on the individual trailer instead of relying on a brand-wide assumption.
