Spring Maintenance Checklist for Your Trailer

The One Thing Most Trailer Owners Skip Every Spring (And Why It Costs Them)

Every spring, we see some version of the same problem. A trailer ran fine when it was parked behind a barn in October, so its owner assumes it will be fine when landscaping, construction, or farm work starts again. The trailer gets hitched, loaded, and sent down the highway without anyone checking the wheel ends, brakes, tires, wiring, or breakaway system.

That is how a small maintenance problem becomes a roadside failure. Grease can deteriorate or become contaminated, seals can begin leaking, brake components and electrical connections can corrode, tires can lose pressure, and batteries can discharge during storage. A bearing that showed only slight play in the fall may overheat once the trailer is loaded. A tire that looked acceptable from ten feet away may have weather cracking, a damaged valve stem, or a sidewall bulge. A breakaway battery that has not received a maintenance charge may no longer operate the brakes when it is needed.

The repair bill is only part of the cost. A failed bearing can damage the hub or spindle. A loose wheel can damage the studs and wheel. A brake or tire failure can put the trailer, cargo, tow vehicle, and everyone nearby at risk. Most of those problems are easier to find in the driveway than alongside US-31 or I-70.

Before you pull out this spring, work through two levels of inspection: a quick 30-minute walk-around before the first tow and a more complete Saturday-morning service that addresses the wheel ends, brakes, suspension, frame, deck, and coupling equipment.

The 30-Minute Pre-Tow Check (Do This Before You Go Anywhere)

This is the minimum inspection for a trailer coming out of winter storage. Perform it with the trailer unloaded, parked on firm and level ground, and secured against movement. If anything looks questionable, stop and have it inspected before loading the trailer.

1. Tires: Pressure, Age, and Condition

Check every trailer tire while it is cold, including the spare. Use the inflation pressure specified on the trailer certification label, owner documentation, or applicable tire load-and-inflation information. Do not use the tow vehicle’s tire-pressure specification, and never exceed the maximum cold pressure molded into the trailer tire’s sidewall. Many ST tires must be operated near their listed maximum pressure to carry their rated load, but the correct pressure still depends on the tire, wheel, trailer, and actual loading.

Temperature changes and normal air loss can leave a stored tire substantially underinflated. Underinflation increases sidewall flex and heat buildup, reduces load-carrying capacity, and can lead to tread separation or failure. Check the valve stems for cracking and listen for leaks around the valve core and bead. Make sure metal valve stems and extensions are tight where they are used on higher-pressure tires.

Find the DOT Tire Identification Number on each sidewall. The final four digits identify the week and year of manufacture. A code ending in “2318,” for example, means the tire was manufactured during the 23rd week of 2018. The complete code may appear on only one side of the tire, so you may need to look underneath the trailer.

Tire age is not the only replacement factor, but it matters even when tread remains. Begin treating trailer tires as age-review items once they reach about five years. Many manufacturers recommend replacement by approximately six years in service, while other published limits differ. Follow the tire manufacturer’s current guidance and replace a tire sooner if it has cracking, impact damage, exposed cords, irregular wear, repeated pressure loss, or any other condition that makes it unserviceable.

Inspect both sidewalls and the full tread surface for cuts, bulges, separations, embedded objects, weather checking, and uneven wear. Temporary flat spotting from storage may diminish after a careful warm-up drive, but a bulge, belt separation, persistent vibration, or visible distortion requires immediate attention. Also inspect the wheels for cracks, elongated stud holes, missing lug nuts, rust trails around the fasteners, and damage from curb or pothole impacts.

2. Lights: Every Single One

Inspect the trailer plug before connecting it. Look for bent or pushed-back terminals, corrosion, damaged insulation, a loose strain relief, or a cable that has been pinched between the coupler and tow vehicle. Plug the connector in fully, start the tow vehicle as required, and have a helper operate each circuit while you walk around the trailer.

Check the running lights, clearance and identification lights, license-plate light, brake lights, left and right turn signals, and hazard lights. Test reverse lights if the trailer is equipped with them. Look closely at side markers and lights mounted near ramps or fenders, where wiring is more likely to be struck by cargo or road debris.

LED lamps last longer than many incandescent lamps, but the lamp is only one part of the circuit. A failed connection, damaged harness, poor chassis ground, blown tow-vehicle fuse, corroded connector, or pinched wire can cause the same symptom. Flickering on several circuits may indicate a ground or connector problem, while one dead lamp may point to the lamp, branch connector, or local wiring.

Clean corrosion with the correct electrical-contact cleaner and repair damaged wiring with sealed, weather-resistant connections. Do not twist bare wires together and cover them with household electrical tape. A lighting problem that appears only while turning or braking often means the harness is being stretched or a connection is moving under load.

3. Breakaway Battery

The breakaway system is separate from the normal trailer-brake controller. If the trailer separates from the tow vehicle, the switch pin is pulled and the onboard battery applies the trailer brakes. It is an emergency system, not a parking brake, and it must be ready before every tow.

Indiana Code 9-19-3-3 requires a trailer or semitrailer with a gross weight of at least 3,000 pounds, when operated on a highway, to have brakes that can be applied by the driver from the cab and that apply automatically in an accidental breakaway. Commercial combinations may also be subject to federal motor-carrier requirements. The important point for an Indiana trailer owner is simple: a required breakaway system must actually work.

Many electric-brake trailers use a rechargeable 12-volt battery, commonly around 5 Ah, but battery size and system design vary. Use the push-to-test indicator if the installed kit has one, and inspect the battery case, terminals, charger wiring, switch, pin, and lanyard. A battery that is swollen, leaking, cracked, badly corroded, or unable to hold charge must be replaced with the correct type and capacity.

Before testing by pulling the switch pin, disconnect the trailer’s 7-way plug from the tow vehicle. Testing while connected can damage some brake controllers or charging circuits. Chock the trailer securely and verify brake application by safely raising and rotating a wheel or by following the breakaway manufacturer’s approved test method. Pull the pin only long enough to confirm operation, then reinstall it fully. Do not leave the brakes energized unnecessarily.

During long storage, the battery should receive a maintenance charge at least every 90 days unless an approved maintainer or charging system is keeping it charged. If the battery, charger, switch, or wiring fails the test, do not tow until the system is repaired.

4. Coupler and Safety Chains

Confirm that the hitch ball or gooseneck ball matches the coupler size and that the coupler, ball, receiver, ball mount, and tow-vehicle hitch are all rated for the loaded trailer. A 2-5/16-inch coupler must be used with a 2-5/16-inch ball; a 3-inch gooseneck coupler requires a 3-inch ball. Never assume that a ball is correct because the coupler appears to fit over it.

Inspect the coupler body, latch, lock pin, adjustment mechanism, welds, mounting bolts, and safety pin. Lower the coupler completely onto the ball and close the latch. On a bumper-pull trailer, use the tongue jack to lift the front of the trailer slightly after latching; a properly connected coupler should remain secured to the ball. On a gooseneck, visually confirm that the locking mechanism and safety pin are fully engaged before retracting the jack.

Inspect every safety-chain link, hook, latch, weld, and attachment point. Replace chains or hooks that are stretched, cracked, deeply pitted, worn thin, bent, or missing a functional retaining latch. The chains, hooks, and tow-vehicle attachment points must have adequate capacity for the loaded trailer.

For a bumper-pull trailer, cross the chains under the tongue when the installed chain arrangement permits. This helps form a cradle if the coupler separates. Leave enough slack for a full turn, but not enough for the chains to drag. Connect the chains to the receiver’s frame-mounted safety-chain loops, not to the hitch ball or removable ball platform. Attach the breakaway cable independently to a suitable tow-vehicle attachment point so it can pull the switch pin if the trailer separates; do not loop it through a safety chain or clip it back to itself.

The Saturday Overhaul (Full Spring Service)

Plan on a half day for a thorough service, and longer if the trailer has multiple axles, hydraulic brakes, oil-bath hubs, a dump system, or damaged components. Use wheel chocks, a jack and jack stands rated for the trailer, eye protection, gloves, a calibrated torque wrench, appropriate hand tools, and the lubricants specified by the component manufacturers.

Lift and support the trailer by the frame at the approved points. Do not support the trailer by the axle tube, equalizer, ramps, hydraulic cylinder, or raised dump bed. Never work underneath a trailer supported only by a hydraulic jack. If you are not equipped to remove hubs, adjust bearings, inspect brakes, or identify structural damage safely, have the work performed by a qualified trailer service technician.

5. Wheel Bearing Repack

Current Diamond C premium FMAX, HDT, LPT, LPX, WDT, and DEC lines use Lippert axles as standard. The correct procedure depends on axle capacity and whether the wheel end uses grease-packed bearings, a Lippert Super Lube system, or an oil-bath hub. Read the axle identification tag and use the applicable Lippert manual rather than relying on a generic maintenance interval.

Current Lippert guidance for its 2,000- through 16,000-pound trailer axles generally calls for bearing inspection and grease replacement every 12 months or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Severe service, high mileage, repeated water exposure, heavy loading, long periods of storage, or evidence of leakage or overheating may justify more frequent service.

For a conventional grease-packed hub, remove the hub or drum, discard the old seal, clean out the old grease, and inspect the inner and outer bearings, cups, spindle, hub, and seal surface. Replace bearings and matching cups that show pitting, spalling, corrosion, blue heat discoloration, roughness, scoring, or other damage. Install the correct new seal and adjust bearing end play exactly as specified by the axle manufacturer.

Use a compatible high-temperature wheel-bearing grease that meets the axle manufacturer’s specification. Lippert commonly specifies an NLGI No. 2 lithium-complex grease with extreme-pressure, corrosion, and oxidation protection. Do not mix incompatible grease chemistries. If the existing grease type is unknown or you are changing products, remove the old grease completely before repacking.

If the axle has a Lippert Super Lube spindle, the grease fitting can purge old grease without removing the hub. Raise the wheel safely, rotate the hub continuously, and pump the specified grease slowly until clean grease emerges around the outer bearing. Pumping too quickly can damage the rear seal and force grease into the brake assembly. Using the fitting does not eliminate the required physical bearing and brake inspection.

Oil-bath hubs are serviced differently. Check the oil level through the clear cap, inspect the oil for discoloration or contamination, and look for leakage around the cap, plug, seal, and rear of the hub. Fill only with the grade and quantity specified for that wheel end. A low oil level or milky oil requires investigation before towing.

During reassembly, tighten the spindle hardware using the axle manufacturer’s bearing-adjustment procedure. Do not treat the spindle nut like an ordinary fastener and simply tighten it as hard as possible. Install the required cotter pin, retainer, or locking device and confirm that the hub rotates correctly without excessive looseness or preload.

After service, install the wheels and torque the lug nuts in the specified pattern and stages. Do not use an impact wrench as the final torque method. Recheck the lug nuts after the initial mileage specified by the axle and trailer manufacturer.

Warning signs include measurable wheel play, grinding, rumbling, grease or oil on the inside of a wheel, a damaged dust cap, and one hub running significantly hotter than comparable hubs after the same trip. Brake operation, direct sunlight, and loading can affect temperature, so compare wheel ends under similar conditions rather than relying on one arbitrary temperature number.

6. Electric Brake Magnet Inspection

Electric drum brakes should be inspected annually or every 36,000 miles under current Lippert guidance, and immediately whenever braking performance changes. Manual-adjust brakes may need adjustment more frequently. Self-adjusting brakes still require inspection for wear, contamination, wiring damage, and correct operation.

Remove each drum and inspect the magnet face with a straightedge. The contact surface should be flat. Replace a magnet that has pronounced gaps, abnormal or uneven wear, exposed coil material, damaged leads, or an incorrect current draw. Inspect the drum’s armature surface at the same time because the magnet and armature wear together. Machining or replacement must remain within the drum manufacturer’s dimensional limits.

Inspect the primary and secondary shoes, springs, adjuster, actuating arm, backing plate, and wiring. Lippert specifies replacement when brake lining is worn to 1/16 inch or less. Shoes should also be replaced if the lining is contaminated with grease or oil, separated from the shoe, badly scored, pitted, or otherwise damaged. Grease-soaked lining should not be cleaned and returned to service because reliable friction cannot be restored.

Do not blow brake dust out with compressed air or dry-brush it into the air. Use an approved brake-cleaning method and follow the component manufacturer’s safety instructions. Locate and correct the source of any grease or oil contamination before installing new brake parts.

Replace brake components in balanced sets as directed by the manufacturer so braking remains even across an axle. New electric drum brakes, magnets, shoes, or drums must be burnished according to Diamond C and Lippert procedures before full braking performance is expected. Increasing controller gain excessively is not a substitute for proper burnishing or adjustment and can damage the magnets.

Brake squeal by itself does not identify one specific failure. Noise, grabbing, delayed application, pulling to one side, repeated lockup, weak braking, or an unusually hot wheel end can result from adjustment, contamination, controller settings, wiring, worn parts, or a mechanical problem. Diagnose the complete system rather than replacing one component based only on sound.

Some heavy Diamond C trailers use hydraulic drum or electric-over-hydraulic disc brakes instead of electric drum brakes. Those systems do not have electric brake magnets at the wheels. Inspect the actuator, fluid level and condition, hoses, fittings, calipers or wheel cylinders, pads or shoes, rotors or drums, breakaway power source, and brake-controller compatibility according to the applicable manuals. Repair any hydraulic leak before towing.

7. Frame Inspection

Indiana road salt, moisture, mud, fertilizer, and deicing chemicals can attack exposed steel and damaged coating. Wash the trailer thoroughly, including the underside, crossmembers, fender supports, suspension area, tongue or gooseneck, ramp structure, and the spaces where dirt becomes trapped. Allow it to dry before inspecting it under bright light.

Diamond C’s DM Difference Maker multi-stage coating system provides durable protection, but no coating is immune to stone chips, abrasion, chemical exposure, or damage from chains and cargo. Inspect coating chips before corrosion spreads underneath the surrounding finish. Clean and repair affected areas with a compatible preparation and touch-up process rather than coating over salt, loose rust, or moisture.

Look for cracked welds, elongated bolt holes, bent crossmembers, distorted fenders, loose jack mounts, damaged stake pockets, cracked tie-downs, heavy scaling, perforation, and areas where the steel has visibly thinned. Pay particular attention to the tongue or gooseneck transition, coupler mount, suspension hangers, axle seats, ramp hinges, dump-body pivots, and places where two pieces of steel trap moisture.

Do not rely on a screwdriver poke test as the only determination of structural condition. Surface discoloration may be cosmetic, while a hairline crack near a weld can be serious even when the surrounding steel looks clean. Any suspected frame crack, failed weld, perforation, or deformation should be evaluated by the dealer or a qualified trailer repair facility before the trailer is loaded. Welding or drilling an engineered frame without approval can create new stress points and may affect warranty coverage.

Inspect the leaf springs for cracks, broken leaves, shifting, sagging, or contact with adjacent components. Check hangers, shackles, equalizers, spring-eye bushings, U-bolts, and mounting hardware for wear or movement. Rust dust around a bolt, shiny metal at a joint, offset shackles, or uneven tire wear can indicate looseness or a worn bushing.

Lubricate only suspension points designed to accept grease, such as serviceable wet bolts or installed grease fittings, and use the specified lubricant. Many suspension bolts and bushings are not greaseable. Do not loosen or randomly retorque suspension hardware without the correct Lippert specification; some fasteners use prevailing-torque nuts or other locking hardware that must be replaced after removal.

8. Deck Boards and Floor

Walk the entire deck while the trailer is unloaded. Check every board for rot, splitting, crushing, severe warping, loose ends, chemical damage, and movement around the fasteners. Probe suspicious wood carefully at the ends, around bolts, above crossmembers, and anywhere mud or moisture remains trapped. A board can look sound on top while deteriorating underneath.

Softness, spongy movement, deep checking, or a board pulling away from its fasteners is a reason to remove it from service. Equipment tires and stabilizer feet place concentrated loads on the deck. A weakened board can fail under a skid steer, mini excavator, tractor, loader, or pallet even when the trailer remains below its overall payload rating.

Replace damaged decking with material that matches the trailer manufacturer’s required thickness, width, grade, species, and installation pattern. Diamond C trailers may use treated lumber, Blackwood, or another specified floor depending on the model and options. Do not substitute thinner lumber or an unknown material simply because it fits between the frame rails.

Use the specified deck fasteners, washers, nuts, and corrosion protection. Generic carriage bolts are not automatically appropriate for every floor or crossmember. Confirm that replacement fasteners have the correct diameter, grade, head style, and locking method and that drilling does not damage wiring, hydraulic lines, frame members, or the surrounding coating.

For trailers with steel floors, inspect for punctures, deep corrosion, cracked welds, deformation between crossmembers, and damage around the rear edge and tie-down points. On dump trailers, inspect the body hinges, tailgate latches, spreader chains, hydraulic hoses, fittings, cylinder mounts, and safety prop. Never work under a raised dump body unless the approved mechanical body prop is correctly installed.

Inspect ramps at the same time. On trailers equipped with MAX Ramps, XDR Ramps, or an X-Ramp, check the hinge pins, assist mechanism, latches, support feet, welds, traction surfaces, and contact points. Make sure both ramps deploy evenly, lock securely for travel, and sit firmly on the ground before loading. Lubricate only the points identified in the ramp or trailer service instructions.

9. Gooseneck and Bumper Coupler Lubrication

Clean old grease, sand, rust particles, and road grit from the hitch ball and coupler socket before applying fresh lubricant. Contaminated grease becomes an abrasive paste and can accelerate wear. Use the lubricant specified by the coupler or hitch manufacturer; a compatible high-pressure grease is commonly used on conventional ball-and-socket contact surfaces.

For a gooseneck, inspect and lubricate the ball pocket, latch, pivot points, safety pin, and height-adjustment mechanism as applicable. Check the coupler tube and set-bolt area for movement or rust trails. Any adjustment or clamping fastener must be torqued according to the exact coupler model, not a generic value.

For a bumper-pull trailer, inspect the ball socket, latch pawl, adjustment hardware, hinge pin, mounting bolts, and lock-pin hole. Apply only a light, even film of grease to the ball and socket; excessive grease attracts dirt and can be forced onto nearby wiring or the tow vehicle.

Inspect pintle hooks, lunette rings, and adjustable hitch channels for wear, deformation, loose hardware, and correct locking. Lubricate pivots and contact areas only as directed by the component manufacturer. Do not apply grease to friction-control surfaces or other parts specifically designed to operate dry.

The 30-Minute Version: If You Only Have One Morning

Not everyone has a full Saturday available before the first spring job. If time is limited, complete this minimum inspection before putting cargo on the trailer:

  1. Check the cold pressure of every tire, including the spare. Inspect the tread, both sidewalls, valve stems, wheels, and lug nuts for cracking, bulging, damage, looseness, or irregular wear.
  2. Inspect and connect the 7-way plug. Test every running light, marker, brake light, turn signal, hazard light, license-plate light, and reverse light if equipped. Repair flickering or dead circuits before leaving.
  3. Chock the trailer, disconnect the 7-way plug, check the breakaway battery indicator or voltage, and perform the manufacturer’s approved switch test. If the brakes do not apply, do not tow until the battery, charger, switch, or wiring is repaired.
  4. Confirm the ball and coupler sizes match, latch the coupler completely, install the safety pin, connect properly rated safety chains, and attach the breakaway cable independently. Inspect the jack and retract it fully.
  5. In a safe private area, make a slow test at approximately 5 to 10 mph. Confirm the service brakes operate smoothly and use the brake controller’s manual control as directed to verify trailer-brake response. Stop immediately for grinding, pulling, grabbing, weak braking, wheel wobble, or unusual vibration.

That takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. It does not replace wheel-end, brake, and suspension service, but it can identify many of the failures most likely to cause trouble on the first trip of the season.

Schedule the complete inspection as soon as possible. If the grease-packed wheel bearings have not been physically inspected within the last 12 months, move that service to the top of the list. The same applies to brakes that have not been inspected, a breakaway battery that was not maintained during storage, and tires approaching the manufacturer’s age limit.

Bearings and brakes do not always provide a long warning period. A hub can progress from slightly loose to dangerously hot during one loaded trip. A damaged seal can contaminate a brake assembly. A weak battery may light a test indicator but fail under sustained load. Finding those problems at the shop is safer and less expensive than discovering them after the trailer is loaded.
