How to Check Trailer Tire Pressure and Tread Depth

Your truck tires are easy to remember because you see them every time you drive. Trailer tires can sit for weeks or months without getting a pressure check, even though they may be carrying thousands of pounds when the trailer goes back to work. That is a problem because an underinflated, overloaded, damaged, or aged trailer tire can build heat and fail at highway speed. A failure can damage the fender, lights, brake wiring, hydraulic lines, or nearby cargo, and it can make the trailer harder to control.

A proper trailer-tire inspection takes only a few minutes. Here is exactly what to check, how to read the markings, and when a tire needs to come out of service.

Start With PSI, But Know Your Load Range First

The pressure molded into a tire’s sidewall next to its maximum load is the maximum cold inflation pressure associated with that rated load. It is not automatically the correct pressure for every trailer on which that tire could be installed. The correct cold pressure should come from the trailer’s federal certification or VIN label, tire placard, owner’s manual, or the trailer and tire manufacturers’ load-and-inflation guidance.

On many utility, cargo, dump, and equipment trailers, the specified cold pressure is the same as the maximum cold pressure molded into the original-equipment tire because the trailer needs the tire’s full rated capacity. That is common, but it should be verified rather than assumed. Load range describes the tire’s strength and pressure class. The load index and maximum-load statement on the sidewall tell you how much that specific tire can carry. The traditional “ply rating” is a strength category and does not necessarily tell you the number of physical plies inside a modern radial tire.

Here is a quick reference for common ST-metric trailer-tire load ranges. These pressure values are common industry conventions, but the tire sidewall and manufacturer data remain the final authority:

Consider a 7,000 lb GVWR tandem-axle trailer with four ST205/75R15 tires. A Load Range C version rated at approximately 1,820 lbs per tire provides about 7,280 lbs of combined tire capacity, while a Load Range D version rated at approximately 2,150 lbs provides about 8,600 lbs. Those numbers do not increase the trailer’s GVWR or axle ratings. They only show why the exact size, load range, load index, wheel rating, axle rating, and certified trailer configuration all matter.

You also cannot determine safe capacity by dividing GVWR by the number of tires and stopping there. Tongue or gooseneck weight transfers part of the trailer’s weight to the tow vehicle, loads may not be distributed evenly from side to side, and tandem or triple axles can experience temporary load shifts on uneven ground. Never exceed the trailer’s GVWR, either axle’s GAWR, the wheel rating, or the tire’s rated capacity.

Running a tire below the pressure required for its load increases sidewall flex and heat. For example, a Load Range D tire whose full capacity is specified at 65 PSI cannot be assumed to retain that full capacity at 50 PSI. Do not estimate the reduced capacity or assume that being “only a few pounds low” is harmless on a heavily loaded trailer.

The rule: inflate cold tires to the pressure specified on the trailer’s certification label or by the trailer manufacturer. Do not automatically lower pressure because the trailer is empty, and do not use an arbitrary “within 5 PSI” unloaded setting. Do not exceed the maximum cold pressure of the tire or wheel. If the tire size, load range, wheel, or axle configuration has been changed from the original equipment, have the complete fitment checked by a qualified trailer or tire professional.

How to Actually Check the Pressure

Use a dependable gauge that covers the pressure range of your tires. A good stick, dial, or digital gauge can work, but it needs to be undamaged, reasonably accurate, and capable of reading the higher pressures used by Load Range E, F, G, H, and commercial 17.5-inch tires. A gauge that tops out at 60 PSI is not appropriate for a tire that requires 80, 110, or 125 PSI.

Check pressure when the tires are cold. The best time is before the trailer moves for the day or after it has been parked for at least three hours. Driving creates heat, and heat raises the pressure reading. Do not bleed air from a hot tire to bring it down to the cold specification; it may be seriously underinflated after it cools.

  1. Locate the trailer’s certification label and confirm the specified tire size and cold inflation pressure. Then verify that the installed tires match the listed size, construction, and required load capacity.
  2. Remove the valve cap and set it somewhere you will not lose it. Inspect the valve stem for cracking, bending, looseness, corrosion, or contact with the wheel opening.
  3. Press the gauge squarely onto the valve stem. A continuing hissing sound means the gauge is not seated correctly. Reposition it and take another reading.
  4. Compare the reading with the trailer manufacturer’s specified cold pressure, not simply with a pressure used on another trailer or printed on a truck’s door placard.
  5. Add air with a compressor rated for the required pressure and duty cycle. A small 12-volt compressor may handle lower-pressure trailer tires but may overheat or fail before filling multiple high-pressure tires.
  6. Recheck the pressure after adding air. It is easy to overshoot, particularly with a small tire or a high-output shop compressor.
  7. Replace the valve cap. The valve core controls the air, while a clean, properly fitted cap keeps out dirt and moisture. A sealing metal cap can also provide secondary protection in higher-pressure applications.

Do this for every tire, including inside duals and the spare. A spare can lose air while sitting even though it has never touched the road. Confirm that the spare is the correct size, has enough load capacity, is within its age limit, and is inflated to its specified cold pressure. Also inspect the spare-tire mount so it is not cutting into the sidewall or allowing the tire to rub against the trailer.

If one tire repeatedly needs air, do not make topping it off part of the routine. The assembly may have a puncture, leaking valve core, cracked stem, damaged wheel, bead leak, or previous repair that needs attention. Have the tire and wheel inspected before the next loaded haul.

Reading Tread Wear

Two thirty-seconds of an inch is the widely recognized worn-out threshold for highway tires. Federal commercial-motor-vehicle rules require at least 2/32 inch in the major tread grooves of non-steering tires, including trailer positions subject to those rules. Built-in tread-wear indicators are also designed to become flush with the surrounding tread at approximately 2/32 inch.

Treat 2/32 as an absolute end-of-service point, not a desirable target for a loaded work trailer. Water evacuation and wet-road grip generally decline as tread wears. Replacing closer to 4/32 inch can be a sensible preventive decision for a trailer that regularly runs in heavy rain, carries livestock, transports expensive equipment, or travels long distances. However, 4/32 is a conservative service threshold, not a universal legal requirement or a mandatory replacement rule published for every trailer tire.

The penny test provides a quick estimate. Insert a penny into a major tread groove with Lincoln’s head pointing down. If the top of Lincoln’s head remains completely visible, the tread is around 2/32 inch or less. A quarter can be used as a rough 4/32-inch check: insert it with Washington’s head pointing down, and if the top of his head is visible, the tread is below approximately 4/32 inch.

A tread-depth gauge is more accurate and inexpensive. Measure several major grooves across the tire and repeat the measurement at multiple points around the circumference. Do not take the reading on top of a wear bar, stone ejector, tie bar, or raised feature inside the groove. A tire is limited by its shallowest meaningful measurement, not its best-looking section.

But tread depth is not the only thing to check. Look at the wear pattern.

  • Center wear: The center of the tread is more worn than the shoulders. Excessive pressure for the tire’s actual service conditions can contribute, but wheel width, tire construction, load history, and fitment can also affect the pattern. Do not reduce pressure below the trailer specification solely to correct center wear without checking the complete setup.
  • Edge wear: Both shoulders are wearing faster than the center. Underinflation and overloading are common causes. Tight turns with tandem or triple axles can also scrub the shoulders, especially when the trailer is heavily loaded.
  • One-sided wear: One edge is significantly more worn than the other. Possible causes include incorrect toe or camber, a bent axle or spindle, axle misalignment, loose or worn suspension parts, a damaged hub, or an uneven side-to-side load.
  • Cupping or scalloping: Alternating high-and-low spots appear around the circumference. Possible causes include wheel or tire imbalance, excessive wheel runout, loose or worn bearings, a bent wheel, suspension movement, alignment problems, or a tire that has developed internal damage.

Uneven wear tells a story, but the pattern alone does not always prove one specific failure. A new tire installed on a trailer with a bent axle, loose bearing, damaged suspension component, incorrect wheel, or chronic overload can wear out rapidly. Diagnose and correct the mechanical or loading problem before sacrificing another tire.

Dry Rot: The Quiet Killer

A trailer tire can have plenty of tread and still be unsafe. Weather checking, ozone cracking, and age-related deterioration occur as rubber is exposed to oxygen, heat, sunlight, ozone, moisture, road chemicals, and long storage periods. A trailer that sits outside in one position for months can age differently from one that is stored indoors and used regularly, but lack of visible wear does not stop the aging process.

Signs of age- or weather-related deterioration include:

  • Cracks in the sidewall or between raised sidewall lettering
  • Cracking in the grooves between tread blocks or at the base of the tread
  • Cracks, cuts, distortion, or exposed material near the bead where the tire meets the wheel
  • Bulges, blisters, bubbles, ripples, or localized swelling in the sidewall
  • Tread lifting, separation lines, exposed cords, or an area that appears out of round

Surface color by itself is not a reliable pass-or-fail test. A tire can look faded without having structural damage, and tire dressing can make an aged tire look black without making it safer. Avoid using petroleum-based products or harsh chemicals that are not approved by the tire manufacturer.

There is no dependable driveway rule that says a crack is safe until it reaches a particular depth such as 1/32 inch. Crack width, location, depth, pattern, exposed reinforcement, tire age, and internal condition all matter. Widespread or deep cracking, visible cords, bead damage, a bulge, or signs of tread separation mean the tire should be removed from service. If the cracking is more than minor surface checking or you cannot tell how deep it is, have the tire inspected by a qualified tire professional. Internal damage may not be visible until the tire is removed from the wheel.

Age Matters as Much as Miles

This is the part many trailer owners skip. Trailer tires age whether the trailer travels 20,000 miles a year or sits behind a barn. Heat, storage conditions, inflation history, loading, speed, impacts, maintenance, and construction all affect service life. Tire dressing cannot reverse chemical aging or repair weakened internal components.

There is no single universal rule requiring every trailer tire to be replaced on its sixth birthday. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that vehicle and tire manufacturers use age-based recommendations that commonly fall between six and ten years, regardless of remaining tread. Some trailer applications and manufacturers call for earlier replacement. Follow the earliest applicable guidance from the tire manufacturer, trailer manufacturer, and fleet or service policy.

For a work trailer, a practical approach is to begin treating age as a major inspection factor by the fifth year and to have older tires professionally evaluated at least annually. Replace them when they reach the applicable manufacturer’s age limit, and replace earlier if there is cracking, repeated air loss, impact damage, irregular wear, separation, overloading history, or uncertainty about prior care. A tire’s maximum age is not a promise that it will remain safe until that date.

The DOT Tire Identification Number tells you when the tire was manufactured. The complete number begins with “DOT” and may appear on only one sidewall, so you may need to look behind the tire or inspect both sides. The last four digits identify the production week and year.

Example: DOT… 2319 means the tire was made during the 23rd week of 2019. By July 2026, that tire is more than seven years old. It has already passed the replacement age used by many six-year policies and should not remain in service merely because the tread still looks deep.

Tires manufactured before 2000 used a three-digit date code, sometimes with a small triangle identifying production in the 1990s. Any road tire still carrying a pre-2000 three-digit code is at least 26 years old in 2026 and should be removed from service immediately.

Factory tire fitments vary by trailer model, GVWR, wheel package, axle configuration, options, and model year. Lower-rated utility and cargo trailers commonly use ST tires, while heavier equipment, dump, and gooseneck trailers may use high-ply all-steel radials or 17.5-inch commercial tire packages. Current Diamond C models such as the FMAX, HDT, LPT, LPX, WDT, and DEC can have substantially different wheel-and-tire equipment depending on their certified configuration. Do not assume every trailer uses the same ST tire type or pressure.

Check the date codes before buying a used trailer and when taking delivery of replacement tires. Tire age is measured from the manufacturing date, not the date the trailer was sold or the date the tire was first installed. A tire can therefore be older than the trailer’s time in service.

ST vs. LT Tires on Trailers

ST means Special Trailer. ST tires are designed for free-rolling trailer axle positions and are not intended for steering or powered drive-axle use. They are commonly engineered to provide substantial load capacity in the compact sizes used by utility, cargo, boat, livestock, RV, dump, and equipment trailers.

LT means Light Truck. An LT tire is not automatically wrong for every trailer. Some trailers are designed, certified, or approved for LT tires, and many heavy commercial trailer configurations use tire types that are not marked ST. The important question is whether the tire is approved for the application and whether its size, construction, load index, load range, speed rating, wheel compatibility, inflation requirements, and combined capacity meet or exceed the trailer manufacturer’s specifications.

Do not replace an ST tire with an LT tire merely because the two tires share a nominal size. The same size designation can have different load capacities, required pressures, dimensions, and wheel requirements. Likewise, installing a higher load range does not increase the trailer’s GVWR, axle rating, hitch rating, or legal payload.

The old idea that every ST tire is limited to 65 mph is outdated. Modern trailer tires carry different speed symbols. Common examples include L for 75 mph, M for 81 mph, and N for 87 mph, while some older or specialty products have lower limits. Read the service description on the actual sidewall and verify the manufacturer’s specifications. A higher tire speed rating does not authorize towing faster than the trailer, wheel, tow vehicle, hitch, road, cargo, or operating conditions safely allow.

When shopping for replacements for a trailer in our inventory or one you already own, start with the trailer’s certification label and original specifications. Use the correct tire type and size, and select a load index and capacity that meet or exceed the original requirements without exceeding the wheel’s pressure rating. Tires on the same axle should match in size, construction, load capability, and service type. Also make sure the valve stems are rated for the required pressure.

Quick Pre-Haul Tire Checklist

Before every towing day, do a complete visual walk-around. It takes only a minute or two and can catch obvious problems before they become highway failures. A visual check does not replace a gauge, because a radial tire can be dangerously low without looking flat.

  • Tires have no obvious sagging, but pressure is still verified with a gauge
  • No nails, screws, stones, metal, or other objects are embedded in the tread
  • No sidewall cuts, scrapes, bulges, bubbles, blisters, or impact marks
  • Valve stems are straight and undamaged, with caps present on every tire
  • No new cracking, exposed cords, tread lifting, or signs of separation
  • Tires on each axle match the required size, construction, and load capability
  • The spare is properly inflated, undamaged, securely mounted, and within its age limit
  • Wheels are not bent, cracked, heavily corroded, or showing elongated lug holes

Check actual cold pressure before each trip whenever practical. At an absolute minimum, check every tire, including the spare, at least monthly, before a long trip, after extended storage, after a major temperature change, and before hauling near the trailer’s rated capacity. Diamond C’s current maintenance guidance also calls for checking pressure, tread depth, and sidewall condition as part of the pre-trip inspection.

A trailer tire-pressure monitoring system can provide useful early warning while traveling, particularly on tandem, triple-axle, and dual-wheel trailers. It does not replace cold-pressure checks, tread measurements, age checks, or hands-on inspection. Set warning thresholds according to the system and tire manufacturers’ instructions rather than using a random percentage copied from another trailer.

When to Call It

Remove the tire from service or arrange professional inspection if any one of these is true:

  1. Tread has reached 2/32 inch, a wear bar is flush with the tread, or any major section is worn below the service limit. Consider preventive replacement closer to 4/32 for frequent wet-weather or high-consequence hauling.
  2. There is a sidewall bulge, bubble, blister, exposed cord, impact break, tread lift, belt separation, or distortion. These conditions are not repaired by adding air.
  3. There is deep or widespread cracking in the sidewall, tread grooves, shoulder, or bead area, or the tire has bead damage from mounting, corrosion, or impact.
  4. The tire has reached the age limit specified by the tire or trailer manufacturer, its date code is unreadable, or its age and maintenance history cannot be verified.
  5. The tire has severe or rapidly developing uneven wear. Inspect the axle alignment, spindle, hub, bearings, suspension, wheel, tire balance, inflation, and load distribution before installing a replacement.
  6. The tire repeatedly loses pressure, has an unrepairable puncture, has been driven significantly underinflated, or has a questionable repair in the shoulder, sidewall, or bead area.

Trailer tires are inexpensive compared with fender damage, torn wiring, damaged cargo, lost work time, or an after-hours roadside call. As of 2026, common ST205/75R15 Load Range D retail examples can range from roughly $100 to $190 or more per tire before installation, depending on brand and construction. Mounting, balancing where requested, valve hardware, disposal, and road-hazard coverage can add to the total. Larger 16-inch and commercial 17.5-inch all-steel tires generally cost more.

Price should not be the only deciding factor. Confirm the tire’s date code, country and plant identification, load index, load range, speed symbol, maximum load, cold pressure, warranty terms, and suitability for the trailer. Replacing one questionable tire is usually far less expensive than repairing a several-thousand-dollar trailer after a preventable failure.
